Tennessee ace Liam Doyle among three finalists for Golden Spikes Award
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Tennessee Baseball starting pitcher Liam Doyle was named one of three finalists for the Golden Spikes Award, which is presented annually to the best player in college baseball. Doyle currently has a 10-3 record with a 2.84 ERA and a national-leading 158 strikeouts. Doyle played a big part in the Vols reaching a fifth straight Super Regional. The junior picked up the win by pitching 6.2 innings against Miami (OH) in the Knoxville Regional opener. He closed out the regional against Wake Forest just three days later. Vols ace Liam Doyle breaks single-season strikeout record Wehiwa Aloy of Arkansas and Florida State's Alex Lodise join Doyle as finalists. The winner will be announced on June 21 at 6:30 p.m. before the first pitch of Game 1 of the College World Series finals. Fan voting is officially opening and will go until June 20. Todd Helton (1995), Chris Burke (2001) and Luke Hochevar (2005) all earned the honor. Dean Curley's HR, 4 RBIs help Tennessee beat Cincinnati 10-6
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Dean Curley had four RBIs, including a solo homer, Andrew Fischer added two doubles and three RBIs and host Tennessee beat Cincinnati 10-6 on Saturday night at the Knoxville Regional. Tennessee (45-16), the defending national champion, can clinch a berth in the super regionals for the fifth consecutive season with a victory Sunday over the winner between the No. 3 seed Bearcats and second-seeded Miami of Ohio, which lost to Cincinnati 11-6 on Friday.

Chapman's 3 RBIs, Doyle's 11 Ks help host Tennessee beat Miami (Ohio) 9-2 at regional
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Reese Chapman had three RBIs, including a solo home run, Liam Doyle recorded 11 strikeouts and top-seeded Tennessee beat Miami (Ohio) 9-2 on Friday night at the Knoxville Regional. No. 14 national seed and regional host Tennessee (44-16) plays third-seeded Cincinnati on Saturday. No. 4 seed Miami (35-22) takes on Wake Forest in a loser-out game. Doyle (10-3) gave up a run on four hits with three walks over 6 2/3 innings. Dean Curley drew a bases-loaded walk in the third inning and Chapman followed with a sacrifice fly that drove in Andrew Fisher to make it 3-1. Fisher, Hunter Ensley and Dalton Bargo hit back-to-back-to-back RBI singles to spark a five-run fourth before Cannon Peebles led off the fifth with a double and scored on a single by Gavin Kilen to make it 9-1. Chapman hit a solo shot to open the scoring in the second but Dillon Baker led off the third with a double and scored on a two-out double by David Novak to make it 1-1. Evan Appelwick capped the scoring with a lead-off homer in the ninth. Cooper Katskee (11-2) gave up seven runs — five earned — on six hits with four walks over 3 1/3 innings. ___ AP college sports:

KNOXVILLE ― After the final out of Vanderbilt baseball's 7-5 win against Tennessee on May 11, which clinched the rivalry series win for the first time since 2021, the teams had to be separated on the field after the benches cleared and several players appeared to exchange words. A Vanderbilt program spokesperson said he was not aware of any ejections or suspensions stemming from the game. "I didn't know what happened really, until I was in the middle of it, but it was just two emotional teams that all played hard," Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin said. "You know that boys will be boys." During the first inning, both teams were issued warnings after Vanderbilt catcher Colin Barczi took exception to Tennessee first baseman Andrew Fischer chirping at Commodores players while rounding the bases after a home run. Tennessee opens in-state series with win over Vanderbilt baseball
No. 12 Tennessee (39-11, 15-10 SEC) opened its final Southeastern Conference home series Friday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The Vols defeated No. 10 Vanderbilt (34-16, 14-11 SEC), 3-2. Rankings reflect the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Liam Doyle (9-2) started for Tennessee and pitched seven innings. He totaled 12 strikeouts and 100 pitches, including 71 strikes, against 24 batters. Doyle allowed three hits, zero walks, zero runs, four fly outs, four ground outs and hit one batter. Advertisement Tanner Franklin relieved Doyle in the eighth inning. He pitched one inning and recorded one strikeout. Nate Snead earned his fifth save of the season for the Vols. Tennessee's offense totaled nine hits, including doubles from Dalton Bargo, Dean Curley and Hunter Ensley. JD Thompson started for Vanderbilt and pitched six innings. He allowed two earned runs, seven hits and two walks. Thompson totaled 102 pitches, including 68 strikes, against 24 batters.
