Johnson, Unicoi counties post highest unemployment rates in TN

JOHNSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Two Northeast Tennessee counties that were both significantly impacted by Hurricane Helene have reported the state's highest unemployment rates. On Thursday, the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development (TDLWD) reported Johnson County had the highest unemployment rate of the state's 95 counties at 5.1%. PREVIOUS: Johnson Co. posts Tennessee's 3rd-highest unemployment rate The second-highest unemployment rate belonged to Unicoi County at 4.9%, according to the TDLWD. Unicoi County's rate was 0.4% higher than the third-highest, Hardeman County in West Tennessee. Both Northeast Tennessee counties exceeded the state's seasonally adjusted April unemployment rate of 3.5% and the U.S. rate of 4.2%. TDLWD did note that while Johnson County remained the only county with an unemployment rate above 5%, it still saw a slight improvement from March by decreasing one-tenth of a percentage point. Unicoi County, which saw its industrial park practically wiped out by Hurricane Helene, was the sole county in the state to see a rise in unemployment from March, according to the TDLWD. Johnson Co. posts Tennessee's 3rd-highest unemployment rate

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — Johnson and Unicoi counties continued to post unemployment rates among the state's highest in March, months after suffering catastrophic damage from Hurricane Helene — though both had higher rates in February. Johnson County's 5.1% rate was Tennessee's third-highest, according to a Thursday release from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. That was down from 5.7% in February. Unicoi County's 4.7% rate was the eighth-highest among Tennessee's 95 counties, but down from 5.1% in February. After seeing its industrial park practically wiped out by the Sept. 27 floods from Helene, Unicoi County saw its rate reach the highest level in the state late last fall. Washington County has Northeast Tennessee's lowest unemployment rate, 3.0%. The state's overall rate is 3.3%. Sullivan County is at 3.3%, while Carter County is the only other county with a rate below 4%, at 3.8%. The region's 3.6% overall rate compares to a 3.1% rate a year ago. The labor force has grown by about 4,000 during that time, to 229,704, but the number of unemployed is up by more than 1,600, from 6,494 to 8,158. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
