OPINION: Bollywood is taking golden era rom-com route for revival and we're here for it

For years now, Bollywood has been dominated by high-octane action thrillers, superhero fantasies, and over-the-top spectacles. While these larger-than-life films have their place, they often leave a void for audiences who long for the simplicity, depth, and emotional richness of classic romantic tales. But 2025 seems to be rewriting the script. With a fresh slate of love stories on the horizon, Bollywood appears to be rediscovering its romantic roots, and audiences couldn't be more excited. The upcoming film Saiyaara, featuring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, is one of the most promising projects spearheading this shift. With a youthful cast and a reportedly heartfelt storyline, Saiyaara promises the kind of sincere, sweeping romance that once defined Bollywood in the era of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Ahaan, making his debut, brings a sense of freshness, while the chemistry with Padda is already generating buzz for its relatability and emotional depth. Dhanush and Kriti Sanon's Tere Ishk Mein, directed by Aanand L. Rai, also offers a potent reminder of the emotional intensity that love stories can carry. The film is said to be packed with raw passion, heartbreak, and vulnerability, all essential ingredients of the golden-era romances that Bollywood fans still hold dear. With Dhanush's intense screen presence and Kriti's charm, this film seems poised to tug at the heartstrings. Another highly anticipated film is Chand Mera Dil, starring Ananya Panday and Lakshya Lalwani. The title alone evokes nostalgia, hinting at a story rooted in old-school romantic ideal, moonlit confessions, longing glances, and the kind of innocence Bollywood used to revel in. Lakshya, too, is shaping up to be a promising romantic hero, bringing subtlety and softness back into the mix. Then there's Anurag Basu's Metro... In Dino, an ensemble film that promises to explore love in the modern era but through an emotional, grounded lens. As a spiritual successor to Life in a... Metro, this film seems poised to offer stories of complex relationships, heartbreak, and hope, proving that love in its many forms still deserves center stage. Param Sundari, starring Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor, and Kartik Aaryan's reported film with Telugu star Sreeleela are further indications that filmmakers are once again investing in love stories that are both rooted and refreshing. These films appear less interested in bombastic action sequences and more focused on chemistry, emotion, and story, the very essence of romantic cinema. This resurgence marks a welcome shift from formulaic action-heavy narratives back to storytelling that values emotional resonance. Audiences are craving vulnerability, realism, and the timeless appeal of falling in love, not superheroes, but human beings navigating life and connection. In embracing the original charm of romance, the music, the heartbreak, the longing, Bollywood is not just reviving a genre, it's rekindling a cultural heartbeat. And in doing so, it reminds us that amid the chaos of modern cinema, the magic of love stories still holds the power to move us all. In conclusion, I feel that by shifting away from the spectacle and returning to authentic, relatable love stories, filmmakers are reconnecting with audiences on a deeper level. As these upcoming films hit the screens, they carry the potential to revive the magic of classic Bollywood romance, proving that sometimes, the simplest stories of love and connection are the most powerful of all.

Kriti Sanon celebrates 11 years in Bollywood, gears up for intense role in ‘Tere Ishk Mein'

Kriti Sanon marked a major milestone in her cinematic journey today as she celebrated 11 years since her Bollywood debut in Heropanti, which hit screens on May 24, 2014. Taking to Instagram, the actress shared rare behind-the-scenes footage from the set of the romantic action drama that launched both her and co-star Tiger Shroff into the limelight. Directed by Sabbir Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, Heropanti told the story of two young lovers navigating a turbulent and violent backdrop. A remake of the Bengali hit Shedin Dekha Hoyechilo, the film struck a chord with audiences and set the stage for a sequel, Heropanti 2, which was released in 2022 featuring Tiger Shroff, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Tara Sutaria. Currently, Kriti is shooting for her next big project, Tere Ishk Mein, directed by Aanand L Rai. This marks her first collaboration with Southern superstar Dhanush. A spiritual successor to Rai's 2013 romantic drama Raanjhanaa, the film explores themes of unrequited love and emotional turmoil. The teaser hints at high drama, with Dhanush's character Shankar introduced amid fiery chaos and intense dialogues. Kriti's glimpse as Mukti from the film has already grabbed attention. Seen walking through a battlefield-like setting, she douses herself in petrol and holds a lighter in a gripping visual, heightening anticipation for her performance. Backed by T-Series and Colour Yellow Productions, with music by A.R. Rahman and screenplay by Himanshu Sharma and Neeraj Yadav, Tere Ishk Mein is slated for a grand release in Hindi and Tamil on November 28.

AR Rahman on his colleagues Harris and Sai Abhyankkar as competition: ‘If we do fewer films…'

AR Rahman was recently seen in a chat with director KS Ravikumar for Thug Life, slated to release on June 5, 2025. Ahead of the film's release, the musician was asked whether he considers musicians like Anirudh Ravichander and Sai Abhyankkar as competition. In response, AR Rahman spoke to Behindwoods TV and said, 'No, I am actually very happy about it. If we do fewer films, we can create songs that are higher in quality. When musicians like Harris Jayaraj, Anirudh Ravichander, and Sai Abhyankkar come forward, I get more time to compose. I can live my life better.' In addition to AR Rahman's response, Kamal Haasan emphasized that creative people need contemporary competition for artistic growth. He added that this is essential for an artist's progress and noted that AR Rahman himself has drawn significant influence from past musicians. For those unaware, musicians like Harris Jayaraj, Anirudh Ravichander, and the latest sensation, Sai Abhyankkar, have collaborated with AR Rahman in recent times. Coming to AR Rahman's work front, the musician is set to hit the big screens with the film Thug Life. The gangster action film tells the story of Rangaraaya Sakthivel Nayakar, a mafia head who adopts a young boy, Amaran, and raises him as his own. As Sakthivel grows older, he appoints Amaran as his right-hand man. However, when Sakthivel is presumed dead, he makes a dramatic return seeking revenge, suspecting his foster son to be behind it, sparking a deadly game of betrayal and survival. The Mani Ratnam directorial is co-written by him and Kamal Haasan. Featuring veteran actors Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR as co-leads, the film also boasts an ensemble cast including Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, and many others in key roles. As the release date approaches, the makers are planning an audio launch event featuring a live performance by AR Rahman. Looking ahead, the musician has several projects lined up, including Tere Ishk Mein, Peddi, Genie, and more.

Aanand L Rai Pens Emotional Note As Tanu Weds Manu Returns Clocks 10 Years

Last Updated: The film starred Kangana Ranaut and R Madhavan as the leads. It has been a whole decade since Aanand L Rai and Colour Yellow released one of Bollywood's most daring and beloved rom-com sequels, Tanu Weds Manu Returns. The film hit theatres in 2015 and quickly became a classic, celebrated for its hilariously chaotic and entertaining depiction of imperfect love. To mark the 10-year milestone, director Aanand L Rai shared a touching Instagram post filled with behind-the-scenes memories. He wrote, '10 saal kam nahi hote par phir bhi aise lag raha hai jaise kal ki hi baat thi. Bahut saara pyar. Love you and miss you guys. @kanganaranaut @actormaddy @deepakdobriyal1 @jimmysheirgill @mohdzeeshanayyub #HimanshuSharma #TanuWedsManuReTurns10 #10YearsOfTanuWedsManuReturns 💛 @cypplofficial." Check it out here: The film starred Kangana Ranaut and R Madhavan as the leads. Kangana Ranaut's unforgettable performance as the fiery Tanu and the fierce yet grounded Datto, alongside R Madhavan's endearing and sometimes confused Manu, made this film a pop culture milestone. The crackling chemistry, messy drama, and memorable one-liners we still quote with pride made it a standout. The film also won three National Awards, including Best Dialogue for Himanshu Sharma and Best Actress for Kangana's outstanding performance. Written by Himanshu Sharma and backed by Colour Yellow, Tanu Weds Manu Returns was notable for its sharp writing, richly developed characters, and refreshingly realistic take on love. The ensemble cast, featuring Jimmy Shergill, Deepak Dobriyal, Swara Bhasker, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, added to its charm, making it more than just an entertaining story—it became an emotion. Ten years later, we still root for Tanu and Manu, and for the filmmaker who brought their story to life. Rai is already onto his next projects, with Tere Ishk Mein arriving in November 2025 and Tu Yaa Main coming on Valentine's Day next year. First Published:
