According to authorities, Ferrell was in the passenger seat of the vehicle when the driver, an unnamed woman, pulled over to talk to the suspect along Progress Boulevard. The driver's child was also in the backseat of the car at the time.
Investigators explained that the suspect and the people in the car knew each other.
For an unknown reason, the suspect took out a gun and began firing at the vehicle. Ferrell was shot multiple times in the upper body. He was taken to a local hospital but later died from his injuries, the sheriff's office said.
The driver sped off after the gunfire erupted and, in doing so, struck a nearby bicyclist. Officials said the bicyclist sustained minor injuries.
The woman then drove to Thornton's gas station on U.S. 301 to seek help. No other injuries were reported.
As of Sunday afternoon, deputies were still looking for the suspected shooter. The sheriff's office has not yet released the suspect's identity.
Anyone with information on the incident or the suspect's whereabouts is asked to contact the sheriff's office at 813-247-8200.
