(AP Photo/Terrance Williams) WASHINGTON (AP) — MacKenzie Gore pitched seven innings of three-hit ball and Amed Rosario homered to break a scoreless tie in the seventh as the Washington Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 2-0 on Wednesday night. Nasim Nuñez added an RBI double in the eighth to chase Cubs starter Matthew Boyd, who carried a perfect game into the sixth before walking Nuñez with one out and then giving up a two-out single to rookie Robert Hassell III. Advertisement Rosario's third homer — an opposite-field shot into the Washington bullpen in right — came on the first pitch thrown by Boyd (5-3) in the seventh. Gore (3-5) has tossed 13 consecutive scoreless innings. He struck out seven, walked one and threw 94 pitches as the Nationals evened the three-game series. The left-hander retired 21 of the final 23 batters he faced in a game that took only 2 hours, 11 minutes. Brad Lord worked a clean eighth and Kyle Finnegan earned his 17th save after letting two runners on in the ninth. Boyd permitted two runs over 7 1/3 innings while striking out seven, walking one and yielding four hits on 95 pitches. Advertisement Key moment Chicago loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning when Gore gave up singles to his first three batters. But he struck out Pete Crow-Armstrong and Dansby Swanson before Nico Hoerner fouled out. Key stat Gore has lowered his ERA in each of his last three starts, from 3.67 to 2.87 during that stretch. Up next The Cubs hadn't announced a starter yet for Thursday's series finale and could potentially use an opener, as they did when Drew Pomeranz threw the first inning of a 2-0 win over Cincinnati last Saturday. Washington will send out right-hander Jake Irvin (5-1, 3.93 ERA) for his 13th start of the season. ___ AP MLB:

NFL owners vote to keep 'Tush Push,' a signature move of Super Bowl champion Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, center, converts a first down running the "Tush Push" against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec. 15 at Lincoln Financial Field. (Terrance Williams / Associated Press) NFL owners have decided to keep the "Tush Push," the signature short-yardage play of the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, after a vote Wednesday at their spring meeting in Minneapolis. Multiple media outlets are reporting that the vote was 22-10 in favor of the ban, falling short of the 24 votes it needed to go into effect. Advertisement The 'Tush Push' is a version of a quarterback sneak in which two or three players line up behind the signal caller and help drive him forward in short-yardage situations. The Eagles — who also call the play the 'Brotherly Shove' — have been nearly flawless in executing the push since 2022, with two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Jalen Hurts carrying the ball. During that span, ESPN reports, the Eagles and Buffalo Bills have run the play more than the rest of the NFL combined, with a far greater success rate (87% for Philadelphia and Buffalo compared to 71% for the rest of the league). Also during the past three seasons, the Eagles have scored 27 touchdowns and recorded 92 first downs using the play, according to ESPN. Read more: What is the 'Tush Push'? And how did the Eagles' signature play become endangered in NFL? Advertisement "Push on," the Eagles said in a graphic posted on X after the vote results came out. A proposal by the Green Bay Packers to ban the play was tabled at the NFL's annual league meeting in April. The Packers submitted a revision this week to prohibit 'an offensive player from pushing, pulling, lifting or assisting the runner except by individually blocking opponents for him.' The initial proposal had called for those restrictions only to be in effect 'immediately at the snap.' The proposal cited 'player safety' and 'pace of play' as reasons for the ban, although many opponents of the play seem to focus on the former argument. Others have questioned the play's place in football, suggesting it is more of a rugby move, and that its perceived automatic nature, at least when the Eagles run it, is bad for the game. Advertisement Eagles coach Nick Sirianni defended his team's use of the play while speaking with reporters in February. 'We work really, really hard, and our guys are talented at this play. And so it's a little insulting to say just because we're good at it, it's automatic," he said. "The fact that it's a successful play for the Eagles and people want to take that away, I think it's a little unfair.' Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and retired Philadelphia center Jason Kelce addressed the team owners Wednesday before the vote. Kelce had explained on the most recent episode on his and brother Travis Kelce's "New Heights" podcast that he was going to Minneapolis "to answer any questions people have" about the safety of the play. Advertisement 'I'm just going to offer, if anybody has any questions about the tush push, or whether I retired because of the tush push, I'll tell you, I'll come out of retirement today if you tell me, 'All you gotta do is run 80 tush pushes to play in the NFL,'" Kelce said. "I'll do that gladly. It'll be the easiest job in the world.' (AP Photo/Terrance Williams) BALTIMORE (AP) — Pitcher Kyle Gibson was designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday with an 0-3 record and a 16.78 ERA in four starts after signing a $5.25 million, one-year contract on March 22. A day after firing manager Brandon Hyde, the Orioles also placed outfielder Tyler O'Neill on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder impingement. Advertisement Gibson allowed six runs and got just two outs in a 10-6 loss to Washington on Saturday, the first game after Tony Mansolino was promoted from third base coach to interim manager. The defeat dropped the Orioles to 15-29. A 37-year-old right-hander who was an All-Star in 2021, Gibson is 112-111 with a 4.60 ERA in 328 starts and six relief appearances over 13 seasons with Minnesota (2013-19), Texas (2020-21), Philadelphia (2021-22), the Orioles (2023, '25) and St. Louis (2024). A two-time Gold Gove winner, O'Neill is hitting .188 with two homers, 10 RBIs and a .605 OPS in his first season since signing a $49.5 million, three-year contract. Mansolino said Sunday he was 'trying to get up to speed' in his promotion from third-base coach. He declined to speculate why general manager Mike Elias appointed him as Hyde's short-term successor. Advertisement 'That's probably a better question for him,' Mansolino said. 'I'm not sure. I've been here for five years, I feel like I've probably built some equity in the building through my time here. I'm sure that had a little something to do with it.' Elias has not spoken with reporters, addressing the decision only in a statement. 'As the head of baseball operations, the poor start to our season is ultimately my responsibility,' he said. 'Part of that responsibility is pursuing difficult changes in order to set a different course for the future.' Baltimore recalled outfielder Dylan Carlson and right-hander Kade Strowd from Triple-A Norfolk. ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Terrance Williams) WASHINGTON (AP) — The opener of a three-game series between the Cleveland Guardians and Washington Nationals was postponed Monday night because of rain. The game will be made up as part of a traditional doubleheader starting at 3:35 p.m. Tuesday. Advertisement Right-hander Luis Ortiz (2-3, 4.78 ERA) had been scheduled to start Monday for Cleveland against Washington's Jake Irvin (2-1, 4.01). The Guardians said Ortiz will start Tuesday's opener, followed by Ben Lively (1-2, 3.72) in the nightcap. Irvin will pitch Game 1 for the Nationals, with Brad Lord (1-3, 4.43) going in the second game. Both teams simply pushed back their Monday night starters to the opener on Tuesday and kept their scheduled Tuesday night starters unchanged. The Guardians have won five of six and sit 1 1/2 games behind first-place Detroit in the AL Central. The Nationals won two of three in a weekend series at Cincinnati. ___ AP MLB:
