Ohio Blvd Project discussion continues

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Dozens of residents attended the Terre Haute City Council Thursday night, as they discussed the proposed Ohio Boulevard Project. Brickyard Estates and Paddock at the Park is a proposed $70 million project. It will include single family homes and multi family units located between Ohio Boulevard and Edgewood Grove. The homes are slated to be part of 93 home subdivision of 1600 square feet and with a price between $350,000 to $400,000. There will also be 11, three story apartment complexes. Many residents voiced they agree with the housing side of the project, but not the apartment side. 'This proposal, the money it will need to be paid back over a 20 year span. And knowing that 20 years from now, think about what those apartments potentially could look like and how they may downgrade and be a detraction from the jewel of Ohio Boulevard and Deming Park,' Resident Heidi Isaia said. The proposal was tabled until June 12th. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Terre Haute adding hotel rooms

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Tourism in Terre Haute has increased and in order to host all of its guests, the city is making some big moves. The Terre Haute City Council has recently approved the issuing of $6.9 million in bonds by the redevelopment commission. That money is a part of a $17 million public incentive package that will be used to expand tourism in the city. The package is made up of bonds, ARPA funds, and money from the state. Executive Director of the Terre Haute Visitors Bureau, Karen Dyer, said the money will be used to add a hotel in downtown Terre Haute. 'Terre Haute is growing', Dyer said. 'Our tourism grew 6.8% last year over the previous year. We don't quite have enough hotel rooms to meet the need for big functions, big sporting events, conferences, and trade shows that we would like to have, especially downtown.' The new hotel will add over 100 new rooms, across the street from the Hilton Garden Inn, just next to Indiana State University. Dyer said the universities play a big role in downtown visitors. 'We have sports tournaments and different things that go on throughout the year', Dyer said. 'We're a very heavy sports destination for our tourism, especially with our three colleges and our three college sports teams. We are hosting a lot of championships, national championships, regional championships, so we're using all of our hotel inventory a lot.' Dyer says the plan will be to build a connection between the new hotel and the Hilton Garden Inn, which is already connected to the Terre Haute Convention Center. General Manager of the Convention Center, Tennille Wanner, said that the most important aspect is walkable rooms. Guests will be able to enjoy an entire event without having to leave the building. 'Having an area where folks can park their car and be able to go to their room, go to a convention, go to their meetings', Wanner said. 'Then if they wanted to go back to their room, be able to quickly get back to their room and change, make phone calls, things like that. Then get back to their meetings. It's really important so they aren't leaving a conference.' Dyer said the hotel will be built for guests, but the money that will be spent downtown will have an effect on the entire city. 'The hospitality industry accounts for about 6% of our jobs locally, which is about 32,00 jobs and 58 cents of every dollar that a tourist spends here, stays here', Dyer said.' Dyer says the hotel will be a Courtyard. The city is hopeful it will be finished in time for Indiana State to host the 2026 Cross Country Nationals. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. TH Chamber of Commerce testifies at the Indiana Statehouse

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, along with its West Central Defense Network imitative, testified at the Indiana Statehouse in support of funding that could be used to support Indiana military bases, Thursday. The Indiana Military Base Infrastructure Grant Program is outlined in an accompanying bill, that would provide the Indiana Defense Task Force with an annual $25 million fund to be administered. One military base in Indiana that the chamber says could benefit from this funding is the 181st Intelligence Wing in Terre Haute. Terre Haute City Council passes new tobacco ordinance 'The allocation of these funds are an investment in Indiana's future, not an expense, withgreat potential for high returns from new economic opportunities created as a 181st Intelligence Wing plays a vital role in national security, employing around500 personnel with Top Secret clearances and working in cutting-edge fields licybersecurity, intelligence analysis and geospatial technologies,' said Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Kristin Craig. The Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce added that additional testimonies from military-focused economic development groups warned that not investing in such facilities could put Indiana at risk of 'Base Realignment and Closure'. This process is where the Department of Defense may close select military installations. 'This base is more than just a military installation—it's a critical economic driver thatsupports hundreds of high-tech, high-paying jobs and strengthens our localeconomy. These are exactly the kinds of jobs we need more of in Indiana—high-skill,high-wage positions that keep our best and brightest in the state,' Craig went on toexplain. 'For us to continue to attract and retain talent, which allows us to attract newdefense missions, private investment and new federal contracts that create more ofthese opportunities, we must ensure the 181st Intelligence Wing has modern, reliableinfrastructure, capable of meeting the needs of current military strategies,' said Craig.
