Patriots defensive coordinator still absent due to ‘health scare'
FOXBOROUGH – As the Patriots work their way through their offseason workout program, there's a notable presence missing on the field. This marks the second week of OTAs as the Patriots have two more weeks left of spring practices before departing for a brief vacation. At this point, the team is still without defensive coordinator Terrell Williams. Advertisement Earlier this offseason, Mike Vrabel revealed that Williams had not been in Foxborough due to a medical issue. The defensive coordinator explained that he was back home and not able to travel due to his doctor's orders. On Wednesday, before practice, Vrabel said he didn't have any updates on Williams. 'No, just that he continues to, like our players, work hard to get back,' Vrabel said. 'I'm excited to have him back. Again, the communication that I see every day with him and the players in their meetings, and I know that he's excited. Hopefully, we'll get him back here sooner rather than later.' Williams wouldn't go into detail on his condition, but noted it was a 'health scare' and 'traumatic.' Advertisement With Williams not at Gillette Stadium, the Patriots have made some adjustments. In his absence, inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr has taken over defensive coordinator duties during practice. Inside the building, however, the Patriots still have Williams run defensive meetings virtually through Zoom. After Wednesday's practice, linebacker Christian Elliss said the defensive coordinator is still able to make an impact on his players. 'Coach T is still with us. We see him every single day on Zoom,' Elliss said. 'So, his energy is not unfelt. We still hear his energy, hear his voice. He gives us the corrections we need to get, so he's still our DC and he still leads this group.' More Patriots Content Read the original article on MassLive.

Patriots DC Terrell Williams takes responsibility for recent health scare, warns others
Patriots DC Terrell Williams takes responsibility for recent health scare, warns others New England Patriots defensive coordinator Terrell Williams provided an update on his recent health scare. Ahead of rookie minicamp, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel revealed that Williams would be out, but he is expected to return to the team at some point. He also indicated that he has been in contact with the defensive coach daily, and Williams was still meeting with players on Zoom. Not much is known about the actual health issues, but Williams added more context when speaking with media members. He is currently focused on getting healthy, and he hopes his health scare educates others on the importance of self-care. 'Football is a job that obviously there is some stress involved. Just eating right. Working out," said Williams, via ESPN's Mike Reiss. "If you're supposed to take any medication, take it. Like I told the players, we all think we're invincible. I think a lot of times, when there are things you can prevent, and you don't prevent them, that's just not being smart. That's what I've done the last couple of years, even longer. "I've ignored doctors. I've ignored everyone and just kind of lived my life. While it was fun, I realize you have to take care of yourself. That's what I'm doing. Where I am now, my mind is clear. I'm moving around. I'm happy. Everything is good. I'm just looking forward to getting back to Foxborough and seeing everybody in person.' Williams came to the Patriots from the Detroit Lions in January after serving as the defensive line coach in the 2024 season. Now, he will look to improve a Patriots defensive unit that ranked near the bottom in the NFL last year. It will certainly be exciting to see the type of impact that Williams has on the Patriots' defensive unit. They have a lot of talent on that side of the ball, much like Williams' Lions defense did last season. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

NFL coach steps away from his team after 'traumatic' health scare
The New England Patriots will be without their defensive coordinator during the team's upcoming rookie minicamp due to an undisclosed 'medical condition.' Head coach Mike Vrabel revealed on Friday that defensive coordinator Terrell Williams would not be joining the team. Vrabel did not go into the specific condition that Williams was dealing with. The head coach also declined to say when he might expect the 50-year-old to make his return to the team. 'I've been in constant communication with him daily,' said Vrabel. 'Terrell's eager to get back, and we're excited to get him back.' Williams spoke to reporters later on Friday, saying that he had a 'health scare' and that he's been in Detroit since the incident happened. The coach called the incident 'traumatic' but says he's 'not away from the team'. Vrabel reported that Williams was taking Zoom calls with players. Williams' duties will be handled by inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr in his absence. 'Zak has great knowledge of what we've done in the past, with me and this system, and with Terrell,' Vrabel said. Williams is in his first season as defensive coordinator with the Patriots, which also is Vrabel's first season at the helm. He was on Vrabel's staff with the Tennessee Titans from 2018-23, finishing that tenure as the assistant head coach and defensive line coach. Williams served as defensive line coach/run game coordinator for the Detroit Lions last season. Williams coached the defensive line for the Miami Dolphins (2015-17) and then-Oakland Raiders (2012-14) after college stints as an assistant at Texas A&M, Purdue, Akron and other schools. Last season, the Patriots finished with a 4-13 record under first-year head coach Jerod Mayo. Mayo was fired an hour after the last game of the season - a win over the Buffalo Bills that prevented the Patriots from claiming the No. 1 overall pick. Instead, New England picked fourth and selected offensive tackle Will Campbell out of LSU.
