Drop-in pitches laid down as international cricket to return to Darwin for first time in 17 years

Don't miss out on the headlines from Northern Territory. Followed categories will be added to My News. Cricket fever is ramping up in the NT with tickets going live for the return of the international game in August, as two drop-in wickets have been installed at TIO Stadium. International cricket was last played in Darwin 17 years ago when Australia took on Bangladesh, but this year the team finally returns for two blockbuster T20s against South Africa. Fans will have the chance to book the best seats in the house for the matches on August 10 and 12 at Ticketek with thousands already expressing interest on pre-sales. Ticket prices are $20 for adults, $5 for children and $43 for families of four. Prior to that series the Australia A side, featuring Territorian Jake Weatherald, will take centre stage against Sri Lanka in July. The Australia A series will feature three 50-over games and two four-day matches, with free entry for general public attendance and all matches streamed live on Kayo Sports and People, Sport and Culture minister Jinson Charls and Jake Weatherald as TIO Stadium's drop-in pitch is laid down. Weatherald was the leading run scorer in the Sheffield Shield with 906 runs and is the all-time leading run scorer for the Adelaide Strikers, with recent exposure to TIO at last year's Top End Series. 'I'm just immensely proud to be a Territorian and get to play for Australia in some facet, it's going to be cool to play on the ground as it's such a great facility,' he said. 'I watched test cricket here long ago when I was a young kid so to be back here representing myself is a critical moment for me. 'The stuff that has been done to support the growth of NT cricket is exciting and to have the teams coming that we do will be cool for Territorians to see, they've been starving for a long time now. 'For young Territorians it's good representation of what you can aspire to be, you don't always get that so hopefully it inspires a lot of kids to play more cricket and aspire to play for Australia.' People, Sport and Culture minister Jinson Charls and NT Cricket CEO Gavin Dovey as TIO Stadium's drop-in pitch is laid down. NT Cricket chief executive Gavin Dovey said it was an exciting year for the sport in the Top End following the recent visit from the Australian women's side. 'The installation of the two drop in wickets marks a significant milestone in the return of international cricket,' he said. 'International cricket offers the Territory a platform few sports can rival, thanks to its huge global audience and economic impact. 'Closer to home, cricket sits at the heart of Australia's national identity, so we can't wait to see a packed out TIO Stadium in August.' People, Sport and Culture minister Jinson Charls said the drop-in pitches was a critical step toward delivering world-class matches to the NT. 'In our year of action, certainty and security, we're incredibly proud to welcome international cricket back to the Territory and demonstrate that Darwin has the capability to host world-class sporting events,' he said. People, Sport and Culture minister Jinson Charls, Major Events minister Marie-Clare Boothby, NT Cricket CEO Gavin Dovey and Jake Weatherald as TIO Stadium's drop-in pitch is laid down. Major Events, Tourism and Hospitality minister Marie-Clare Boothby said major sporting events like international cricket provide a real boost to the Top End. 'Major events like the Australia v South Africa T20s bring huge energy to our region, boosting tourism, business and community pride,' she said. 'We are proud our government has brought back international cricket to the NT for the first time in 17 years. 'Events like this draw fans from across the country, and we look forward to seeing supporters from near and far pack TIO Stadium.' BREAKING NEWS Major update after Darwin supermarket owner was stabbed to death

An 18-year-old has been charged with murder after a beloved supermarket owner was stabbed to death. Canadian-born Linford Feich, 71, ran the Friendly Grocer Nightcliff Supermarket in Darwin's west, where he was allegedly attacked on Wednesday evening after he confronted an alleged teenage shoplifter. Customers at the store, which included at least one doctor, performed first aid and CPR until paramedics arrived but he died at the scene. The alleged teenage offender left the scene on a bicycle and after an extensive police manhunt, he turned himself in shortly after midnight. The man was charged with one count of murder late on Thursday. He was remanded in custody with face the Darwin Local Court on Monday, April 28. It was revealed earlier on Wednesday that the 18-year-old was already on bail and restricted to remain in a remote community, but was not wearing his required ankle bracelet. An 18-year-old has been arrested following the stabbing death of a Darwin supermarket owner on Wednesday night Distraught onlookers recalled hearing shouting before the store owner was stabbed. 'As soon as we entered we heard the voice (of the man), he tried to kick (him out), while (he was) stealing things,' one woman told the NT News. 'Two staff members directed him to the door and suddenly (he allegedly) took out a knife and stabbed the man … and he collapsed.' She said she called emergency services about 5.17pm to report the man's injuries. NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro of the Country Liberals assumed government in August last year with a focus on cracking down on rampant crime in the Territory. She issued a video statement to social media on Wednesday night. 'It is devastating that we are at this point, again,' Mrs Finocchiaro said. 'Our focus right now is on the welfare of the family … every Territorian knows this not okay, and we reinforce our commitment that everything is on the table. 'The police and I will have more to say as the situation unfolds.' Just two months after Ms Finocchiaro took office, her government successfully passed legislation to lower the age of criminal responsibility back to 10 years. It also enacted tougher bail laws for violent offenders, which had been sparked by the death of bottle shop worker Declan Laverty, who was killed by a 19-year-old on bail for aggravated robbery and assault. Ms Finocchiaro also put in seven requests to the Commonwealth for assistance to tackle crime in the NT. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese committed to one of them - the easing of federal laws to allow the use of police drones. Opposition leader Peter Dutton agreed 'in principal' to the other six, which includes more income management for parents of youth offenders and kids who do not attend school. Mr Feich's wife shared an emotional tribute to him early on Thursday morning. 'My name is Margaret and I am Linford's wife. I am sitting here at 3am too broken to go to sleep because my life has been shattered.. My beautiful husband of 51 years was stolen from me his children and his 7 grand children,' she wrote. 'This is so hurtful. An 18 year old kid has done this in a dreadful moment of anger because he was confronted with theft. 'The trauma it has caused to the beautiful staff who we love as family, the trauma to our beautiful customers, Linford worked so sincerely to maintain the community vibe with smiles, trust and humanity. 'A beautiful man, a true gentleman, and my soulmate. Gone forever. God Bless Him. RIP my darling man.' NT politicians issued condolences to Mr Feich's family. 'My thoughts are with the family whose lives have been impacted by this senseless attack and the first responders who rendered assistance,' federal Senator Malarndirri McCarthy said. 'The Territory community is with you.'

Nightcliff Friendly Grocer owner Linford Feick allegedly stabbed to death by teenager out on bail at time

A teenager who handed himself in after the fatal stabbing of a Darwin grocery store owner was reportedly out on bail for a series of alleged violent offences and had been banned from the CBD at the time. Linford Feick, 71, was working at his Nightcliff Friendly Grocer on Wednesday around 5.15pm when a confrontation with an alleged shoplifter turned deadly. Police say Mr Feick had asked a teenager to return items that he believed were stolen, but the teen allegedly stabbed him with an edged weapon before fleeing on a bicycle. Patrons provided first aid and emergency services carried out CPR, but the 71-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. A witness told the NT News that as she entered the store, she heard a man's voice trying to kick someone out. 'As soon as we entered we heard the voice (of the man), he tried to kick (him out), while (he was) stealing things,' she said. 'Two staff members directed him to the door and suddenly (he) took out a knife and stabbed the man … and he collapsed.' Police say the 18-year-old was taken into custody after he handed himself into Palmerston Police Station at 12.35am on Thursday. He has not yet been charged. Police have confirmed the teenager was on bail with conditions to remain in a remote Territory community and did not have an electronic monitoring bracelet as a condition of his bail . The Australian has reported he was already facing a long list of charges including for aggravated assault and rape at the time of the grocery store stabbing. He appeared in Northern Territory Supreme Court last week where his bail was continued on two counts of aggravated assault and three counts of rape. He had also been charged with depriving a person of their personal liberty, sexual intercourse with a child under 16, assaulting and resisting police and spitting on an officer or emergency worker. In a Facebook post, Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said her government's current focus was on the welfare of the man's family. 'It is devastating that we are at this point again,' she said. 'Every Territorian knows that this is not okay and we reinforce our commitment that everything is on the table.' The death comes about two years after the murder of bottle shop worker Declan Laverty, who was killed while on shift at a BWS near Darwin airport. His killing by a man who was out on bail prompted a tightening of laws under Ms Finocchiaro's government. Mr Fieck's wife Margaret took to social media early on Thursday to pay tribute to her husband, who she described as a 'true gentleman and my soulmate'. 'My beautiful husband of 51 years was stolen from me, his children and his seven grandchildren,' a post on Facebook reads. 'This is so hurtful.' 'The trauma it has caused to the beautiful staff who we love as family, the trauma to our beautiful customers, Linford worked so sincerely to maintain the community vibe with smiles, trust and humanity. 'A beautiful man, a true gentleman, and my soulmate. Gone forever. God Bless Him. RIP my darling man.' His son Ben told The Australian Mr Feick's violent death was the family's 'worst nightmare come true'. 'This is something that has been a reality to us for a long time.' Locals say they are heartbroken by his shock death. One told Newswire they were '(gutted) that this could happen to such a great family who provide our community with such (an) essential service'. — with AAP
