Unassuming UK seaside town where locals are 87-miles away from railway station
A peaceful seaside town with average house prices costing just £103,078 is conveniently located near some of the country's best beaches and wildlife - but getting there isn't easy A stunning seaside town surrounded by rolling countryside also happens to be one of the most remote parts of the UK mainland. Once touted as the whisky capital of the world, and just a stone's throw from some of the country's most beautiful beaches - Campbeltown is the epitome of a coastal gem. Located on the scenic Kintyre Peninsula in Scotland, this tiny town is home to three active distilleries, and looks out onto the privately-owned Davaar Island, famed for its wealth of wildlife (including Minke whales and dolphins). As previously reported, average house prices in Campbeltown cost just £103,078, an 11 percent decrease compared to the year before and less than half of the national house price average in the UK. But before you pack your bags and leave the bustling city for good - it's worth understanding just how difficult it is to actually get to Campbeltown. Situated almost 550 miles from the Big Smoke, driving to the seaside town from London will take a staggering 10 hours in the car. It's no faster getting the train either, as the nearest railway station to Campbeltown is more than 86 miles away over in Oban. So, even if you take an eight-hour train journey - which usually consists of two stopovers - you'll still be a two-hour and nine-minute car drive away. If you take the bus, this adds an extra hour and 15 minutes to the journey. The quickest way to get to Campbeltown is to actually fly from Glasgow, which only takes 45 minutes. You can grab return flights for as little as £86 in July. For locals, Campbeltown's remoteness isn't so much of a problem. The town boasts a slew of amenities including a Tesco Superstore and a Co-Op for your weekly food shop. There is also a newsagents, a number of restaurants and shops including The Original Factory Shop, The Queen B clothing store, and a boutique chocolatier. The town is just a nine-minute drive over to Westport Beach, a six-mile stretch of golden sands popular with surfers and dog walkers alike. "The beach is nestled alongside Machrihanish Golf Course, one of the finest links golf courses in the UK," adds Visit Scotland. Of course, visiting a whisky distillery is a must when you're in Campbeltown. Glen Scotia - one of Scotland's smallest whisky distilleries established in 1832 - still offers tours and tastings to the public. Springbank Whisky Distillers also operate in the town, and are the only place that carries out the entire whisky production process, including the traditional floor malting, maturation and bottling, on its premises.
