Robotaxi launch: Event date, place, time and all news about Tesla's new autonomous vehicle

Elon Musk 's dream of a robotaxi is coming true, but it hasn't been easy. Tesla 's robotaxi service is finally going to launch in Austin, Texas, after months of delays and problems. Here's when it will happen, why it's important, and what you can expect. Why is this launch so significant for Tesla and its future? Tesla's robotaxi service wants to change the way people get around, starting with a small rollout and possibly spreading across the country. If it works, it could change the self-driving car market and Tesla's future in a big way. Following three consecutive sessions of gains, Tesla (TSLA) shares are up Wednesday as a result of new social media posts from CEO Elon Musk. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dhoni's Exclusive Home Interior Choice? When a user inquired about the start date of Tesla's robotaxi program on Tuesday night, Musk replied that it would happen "tentatively, June 22,' as per a report by Investopedia. 'We are being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift," Musk wrote in a tweet. He added that the first Tesla that will drive itself from the factory directly to a customer's door should be delivered about a week later, on June 28, as per a report. The Tesla X account responded to another user who shared a video of what looked to be a Tesla being tested on Austin, Texas, roads without a driver in the driver's seat and posted a robot and car emoji in its own post, which was made hours before Musk's. The vehicle test confirms that "a key component of our TSLA thesis has officially begun playing out," according to a Tuesday report by Piper Sandler analysts, who have a $400 price target. Although specifics regarding the possible launch have not yet been made public, Elon Musk has stated that Tesla's plans for a more reasonably priced Tesla model are also on track to launch this month. What challenges is Tesla facing? Elon Musk has provided explanations for why it might not launch this week. While Waymo is formally in the "deployment" phase of autonomous driving operations in the city, the company is listed as being in the "testing" phase. Garrett Nelson, a CFRA analyst, predicts that Tesla's unsupervised robotaxi service launch will be largely unimpressive and will not have the same fanfare as last October's Robotaxi Day. What will the first robotaxi service in Austin be like? Initially, the company will observe about a dozen driverless Model Y cars using Full Self-Driving technology in a geofenced area of Austin, Texas, under remote performance supervision. The most crucial metrics will be how many incidents and interventions the cars record over the next few months, as well as how fast TSLA can turn off remote supervision and enter new markets outside of the geofenced area. Are there any delays or hurdles holding the robotaxi back? Elon Musk's announcement of the Austin trial last month sparked a stir among Tesla bulls who have been eager for robotaxis to go on the road. Even though the dream is still alive, investors are likely to face more obstacles in the future due to the recent detours. There will be more turbulence for the robotaxi rollout due to the unsettling developments of late. Elon Musk chose Texas because it is his home state and has far more lenient laws governing autonomous vehicles (AVs) than California. But lawmakers in Texas have sent a dismal message just days before the start of the process. An Austin-based organization advised Tesla to wait until September 1, when the new AV regulations go into effect. Safety checks and more precise compliance guidelines are part of the new regulations. According to reports, seven Texas lawmakers have signed the hold-off on the rollout. FAQs When and where will the Tesla robotaxi be launched? The launch date is tentatively scheduled for June 22 in Austin, Texas. Will robotaxis be available anywhere? Not yet, it will begin with a small area in Austin, with plans to expand later.

Tesla CEO Musk Announces Robotaxi Launch Date, Says He Regrets Some Trump Posts

Tesla shares rose Wednesday morning as CEO Elon Musk said the EV maker's robotaxi program is set to launch June 22. Previous reports indicated the company was targeting a June 12 launch, a date Tesla never commented on or confirmed. Musk also said Wednesday that he regrets some of the posts he made attacking President Donald Trump last (TSLA) shares are rising in premarket trading Wednesday after three straight sessions of gains thanks to new social media posts from CEO Elon Musk. On Tuesday evening, Musk responded to a user asking questions about the launch of Tesla's robotaxi program, saying it will launch "tentatively, June 22." "We are being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift," Musk wrote. He added that the first Tesla that will drive itself from the factory directly to a customer's door should be delivered about a week later, on June 28. Last month, Bloomberg reported that Tesla was targeting a June 12 launch for the autonomous ridesharing service, while Musk had previously only said the program was on track to launch sometime this month. In its own posts hours before Musk's, the Tesla X account posted a robot and car emoji, and responded to another user sharing video of what appeared to be a Tesla with no one in the driver's seat being tested on the roads of Austin, Texas. Musk has also said Tesla's plans for a more affordable Tesla model are on track to launch this month as well, but details about that potential launch have yet to be released. In another post early Wednesday, Musk said he regrets some of the posts he made during his public split with President Donald Trump last week, saying they "went too far." In a few posts, which have since been deleted, Musk accused Trump of being in the "Epstein files," referencing the late convicted sex trafficker, and agreed with another user who said Trump should be impeached so Vice President JD Vance could take over. Musk spent days criticizing the budget reconciliation bill currently working its way through Congress for adding to the deficit and national debt. Trump last week said he was "disappointed" in Musk for his comments, and the pair continued to exchange comments and insults on their own social media platforms for hours afterward. Tesla shares were up nearly 2% in premarket trading Wednesday, and through Tuesday's close have recovered most of the 14% one-day drop they suffered while Trump and Musk were feuding. Elon Musk makes another bold Tesla promise

As both fans and foes of Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk are well aware, the man really, really likes to wave his hands in the air and make big, game-changing promises. Many will remember his sci-fi-esque Hyperloop system, which he spent a lot of time talking about in the 2010s. SpaceX trademarked the concept of a series of tubes that could shoot passengers from point A to point B in record time, but the concept never got past the point of a test track built around the SpaceX Hawthorne facility. Don't miss the move: SIGN UP for TheStreet's FREE Daily newsletter Then there was the 2011 Wall Street Journal interview where Musk said that SpaceX had the capability to send a person to Mars in a decade (or at worst, 15 to 20 years). By 2021, that had not happened. He later said that date had changed to 2028. Despite promises that his cars would drive themselves, the numerous accidents that have piled up when full self-driving (FSD) was in use have led to major scrutiny for Tesla. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently investigating the situation. Now Musk has made a new promise, and considering his track record, you may want to take it with a grain of salt. In a tweet shared on the official Tesla X account on April 15, a post from the Tesla AI official account was reshared alongside a video that shows a line of cars driving out of a Tesla facility unmanned. The tweet reads, "Giga Texas production now uses FSD Unsupervised to deliver cars from end of line to the outbound logistics lot. Over 50,000 driverless miles have been accrued between California and Texas factories so far." Related: Driverless taxi company and Uber share huge expansion plans The thread goes on to promise that "Model Ys autonomously navigate a 1.4 mile trip on a road shared with pedestrians, cars, semi trucks, construction equipment & more." It also makes a promise about Cybertrucks, saying, "Cybertrucks autonomously navigate a 0.6 mile route traversing beneath one of America's fastest highways, emerging through a steep 17% grade to reach their destination." The official Tesla account left a note along with the reshared post, saying, "One day it'll drive itself right to your house." During Tesla's January earnings call, Musk promised that the debut of full self-driving is in sight this year. "We're going to be launching unsupervised full self-driving as a paid service in Austin in June," the CEO said. "So, I talked to the team. We feel confident in being able to do an initial launch of unsupervised, no one in the car, full self-driving in Austin in June. We already have Teslas operating autonomously unsupervised full self-driving at our factory in Fremont, and we'll soon be doing that at our factory in Texas." Tesla previously told customers that its full self-driving technology (FSD) requires supervision at all times, so it's worth noting the word "unsupervised" here. It's also noteworthy that if this big launch goes to plan, it will basically duplicate the same experience that Alphabet-owned Waymo has been running for several years. The company has successfully offered rides in self-driving vehicles via a partnership with Uber and just announced it's expanding the service to Atlanta this year. In the meantime, Tesla stock has been on a bumpy ride for the last year, with a 3% drop in value since the same time in 2024.
