Former Longhorn Scottie Scheffler wins PGA Championship, third major win

It appears we're living in the 'Scottie Scheffler' era in professional golf. The former Texas Longhorn shot an even-par 71 on Sunday to win the 2025 PGA Championship. Scheffler struggled on the front nine at Quail Hollow and was caught by Spaniard Jon Rahm. But the Texan found his swing on the back nine as Rahm faltered to win his third major. Scheffler built a three-stroke lead heading into the final round with a dazzling 65 on Saturday, including playing the last five holes in 5 under. The 28-year-old world No. 1 joins Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus as just the third player to win three career majors and 15 PGA Tour titles so young. Two weeks ago Scheffler won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson by eight strokes for his first victory of the season. Now the PGA Championship by five shots. Since 1970, only one player has won consecutive Tour starts both by at least 5 strokes. Tiger Woods did that twice – at the 2000 Memorial Tournament (won by 5) and U.S. Open (won by 15) and the 2007 Tour Championship (won by 8) and 2008 Buick Invitational (won by 8). Advertisement Scheffler has had a slow start to the 2025 season. The two-time Masters winner cut his hand over the holidays, which required surgery and a few months of recovery time. In addition to acting as ESPN College GameDay guest picker for the Texas-Georgia game in October, he was also named the USA TODAY Sports Athlete of the Year. The former Texas golfer's 2024 is one of the most epic seasons any athlete has ever had in any sport. If it was a movie script it wouldn't be believable. Scheffler won his second Players Championship. He won his second Masters. He had a kid. He was arrested nine days later outside the gates of a major championship … that he was playing in. He still played in the PGA Championship and played well. After the were charges dropped in Kentucky, the Texas Ex then went on a hot streak that saw four more wins, the Tour Championship and the FedEx cup all in one day. Finally, he ended the year by winning the Hero World Challenge and cutting his hand open on Christmas day. That's ten wins, one major, one baby, one arrest, the FedEx cup and $65 million … in winnings. Oh, and a gold medal -- only the third American to do it. He also won an ESPY. That doesn't count what he's made on endorsements. Or, for that matter, what he's lost in attorney fees. Advertisement Scheffler became the only golfer in history to win the The Players Championship, the Masters Tournament and the Tour Championship in the same season this year. Tiger never did it. Jack never did it. Sunday, Scheffler's win on Sunday has cemented the Dallas native as the dominant golfer of this era. He has already automatically qualified for the World Golf Hall of Fame. He's certainly making the University of Texas golf program proud. This article originally appeared on Longhorns Wire: Former Texas Longhorn golfer Scottie Scheffler wins PGA Championship

Could former Texas Longhorns WR Isaiah Bond end up with the Dallas Cowboys?

Could former Texas Longhorns WR Isaiah Bond end up with the Dallas Cowboys? Even thought it is widely thought to have been the Dallas Cowboys biggest position of need, America's Team didn't draft a wide receiver in last week's 2025 NFL Draft. There's speculation owner and GM Jerry Jones could turn to a former Texas Longhorns WR that went undrafted due to recent legal problems. Isaiah Bond was projected to be a high draft pick. Most mock drafts placed Bond in the second round of the NFL Draft. But in early April, Bond turned had to turn himself in to Frisco, TX police because of an outstanding warrant for an arrest on a charge of sexual assault. Bond, 21, was released after posting $25,000 bail. Bond and his representation have filed a defamation lawsuit against his accuser in the United States District Court in North Texas. A 17-page legal complaint and explanation was sent to all NFL teams by his agent, Damien Butler. But it wasn't enough for the speedy wide out to get drafted in Green Bay. The fact the case is in Frisco, home of the Cowboys, should give the team of the severity and the validity of the accusations. In the past, the Cowboys have overlooked occasional past problems and transgressions when they are in desperate need at a certain position. But if the 2025 NFL Draft is an indication, that narrative might be changing. Dallas drafted nine players last week that have reputations as "leaders," many with experience captaining their college teams. The Cowboys were specifically looking to draft players with a "proven strong love for the sport." Dallas management might be tired of seeing lost games and bad attitudes tied to those with off-the-field issues. For now, the Cowboys seem to be a non-starter. Where does that leave Bond? One NFL source told Cowboys insider Mike Fisher, "Let's see if he's proven innocent. Let's see what happens when the dust settles.'' Bond will mostly likely need to clear up his legal issues in Texas before any team would consider signing the Texas Ex.

KC Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy becomes first Texas Longhorn to score a Super Bowl TD in loss

KC Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy becomes first Texas Longhorn to score a Super Bowl TD in loss It finally happened. A Texas Longhorn has scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl. It has been an oddity for years that a Texas Ex has never scored a TD an any Super Bowl before Sunday. But that run is over after Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy caught a 24-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes for the Chiefs first score late in the third quarter. Worthy wasn't done either. With less than two left in the game, Mahomes let loose a 50-yard bomb to the former Longhorn for another TD. The touchdown was a footnote in a dominant 40-22 Philadelphia Eagles win in Super Bowl 59. Worthy was arguably the best Chiefs player on offense. The NFL combine 40-yard dash record-holder finished the night with eight catches, two touchdowns and a game-high 157 yards. The 157 yards is also a career high for Worthy, who wraps up his first NFL postseason with 19 catches for 287 yards and three touchdowns. Worthy isn't the first Texas Ex to score in a Super Bowl. That honor went to Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker in Super Bowl 47, who scored 10 points on two field goals and four extra points. But Worthy is now the highest scoring Longhorn in Super Bowl history.
