Man kills woman's father for rejecting marriage proposal
Thiruvananthapuram: A 31-year-old man stabbed a 67-year-old man to death for allegedly denying him permission to marry his daughter, at Thonnakkal on Wednesday. Police identified the deceased as Thaha of TN Cottage near Pattathinkara at Thonnakkal. Mangalapuram police arrested Rashid of Pathinaram Mile near Melethonnakkal for the murder. According to police, the accused, armed with a knife, trespassed into the house of the deceased at 1:45pm. He kicked Thaha's wife Noorjahan who tried to stop him and ran to the hall and stabbed Thaha multiple times in the stomach and chest. He then escaped from the scene. His wife, Noorjahan, was also injured in the attack, police said. Thaha was soon rushed to the medical college hospital, however he died on Wednesday night while undergoing treatment. Rashid was remanded after being produced before a court on charges under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 333 for house trespass, 74 for assault or using criminal force against a woman with the intention to outrage her modesty, 103 for murder, 296 (b) for abusing, and 126 (2) for wrongful restraint. Police said the accused attacked Thaha twice before as well and there was a case registered against him. Thaha had four daughters. "The accused used to claim that he was in a relationship with my elder sister, but he never sent any marriage proposal. When my father was attacked last time, we had filed a complaint with Mangalapuram police. However, by citing insanity, he escaped from all charges," said Nusaha, Thaha's third daughter.

The Mangalapuram police have arrested Rashid, 31, in connection with the murder. The violent altercation occurred around 2 pm on Wednesday. Rashid, armed with a knife, entered the elderly man, A Thaha's house with the intention to kill. Although Thaha's wife, Noor Jahan, attempted to intervene, Rashid pushed her aside and proceeded to stab Thaha. Despite being stabbed in the stomach, Thaha managed to flee to the second floor of the house, but Rashid pursued him and inflicted further injuries. Thaha sustained severe abdominal wounds, with his intestines protruding from four stab sites. Despite efforts by relatives and locals to rush him to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, Thaha succumbed to his injuries at around 1 am. Following the attack, Rashid attempted to escape but was apprehended by local residents who handed him over to the Mangalapuram police. During interrogation, Rashid confessed that his motive was revenge because Thaha had refused to marry his daughter to him. Police said that Rashid had previously assaulted Thaha as well. They further added that Thaha was due to embark on a Hajj pilgrimage with his wife on May 28.

Confirm appointment of college principal, high court directs Kerala University
Kochi: HC has directed to confirm the provisional appointment of as principal of MSM College, Kayamkulam, which had earlier been denied following an allegation that an SFI leader gained admission to a PG course at the college using a fake degree N Nagaresh issued the order in a petition by Thaha, seeking a directive to the university to approve his appointment. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The issue stemmed from a controversy over the admission of SFI leader Nikhil M Thomas to a PG course using a fake degree certificate purportedly issued by Kalinga University in 2023, while serving as the public information officer of the college under the RTI Act, Thaha responded to an application seeking details of the degree certificate submitted by Thomas. In his reply, he stated that the genuineness of the certificate produced by Thomas could only be verified by Kalinga University. It was later found that the certificate was fake. Following this, the university withdrew its approval for Thaha's appointment as principal-in-charge of the college, alleging that he had acted negligently by not cross-verifying the documents upon receipt of the RTI application. The university also directed the college manager to initiate disciplinary proceedings against plea contended that he had no role in Thomas's admission and that, at the time, another teacher was serving as principal. The university opposed his contentions, arguing that despite receiving RTI applications and having reasons to suspect the authenticity of the certificate, the college authorities failed to act. Meanwhile, HC provisionally directed the university to approve Thaha's appointment by way of an interim order, noting that his selection was made through a due its final order, HC held that as long as no specific complaint regarding a forged document is received, and since the petitioner was not the competent officer to act on such a complaint, a public information officer is under no legal obligation to initiate an investigation. It observed that the RTI Act, particularly Section 7, does not confer such powers or duties on a public information officer. Accordingly, HC directed Kerala University to confirm Thaha's appointment as principal.
