Thane CDR racket exposed: Fake cop, dismissed constables & leaked telecom data under probe

THANE: The Thane Crime Branch 's investigation into the illegal Call Detail Record (CDR) extraction racket revealed startling details about key accused Sohail Rajput 's operations. This included his elaborate impersonation of a police officer and the use of multiple electronic devices to conduct his illegal activities. Investigators seized five mobile phones and a laptop from Rajput, all of which are currently undergoing examination for further leads into the case and to understand the extent of the racket. Officials are scrutinising his call records to map his network and identify potential collaborators in the racket that has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community, said a senior police officer. "The probe is in the right direction, and we shall soon arrest the fourth accused in the case, who is the brother of Rajput," a senior police official told TOI on condition of anonymity. Police officers believe this false identity may have been used to intimidate targets or gain access to restricted information. 'We are probing him from all angles,' added the officer. The racket came to light last week when two constables from the Thane Cyber Crime Cell , Akash Surve and Harshad Parab, were arrested and subsequently dismissed from service for allegedly leaking sensitive telecom data to private detective agencies for monetary gain. According to police officers, the operation ran since 2022, with the dismissed constables misusing their govt credentials to obtain CDRs and Subscriber Detail Records (SDRs) without proper authorisation. The investigation revealed that the duo collaborated with known offenders, including Sohail Mohammed Rajput and his currently absconding brother Salik Mohammed Rajput , to distribute the illegally obtained data.

Angered over demands of sexual favours, man abducts and murders his employer in Thane

The Thane police Monday arrested a 21-year-old man from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly murdering his employer, whose headless body was found in the forests at Bhiwandi on April 16. According to the police, Kajukumar Rajendra Ram alleged that the deceased Farhat Shaikh, 52, had been demanding sexual favours, due to which he decided to murder him. The police said Shaikh's family lodged a missing persons complaint at the local police station on April 12 after he did not return home. The family found his scooter abandoned near a crematorium in Karivali village at Bhiwandi. The family also received a message seeking a ransom of Rs 3 lakh if they wanted Shaikh to be unharmed. Four days later, on April 16, Shaikh's body was found in a forest near Bhiwandi, following which the Thane police registered a murder case. As the Thane Crime Branch began a parallel probe into the matter, they scoured CCTV cameras installed in the area. They spotted Shaikh going on a two-wheeler and a person in a yellow shirt following him on the day he went missing. Using the Shaikh family's help, the police identified the person as Ram. Shaikh's family told the police that Ram had been working at the powerloom owned by Shaikh for the past few years. The police then started tracking his movements using technical help and found that he had gone to his native place, Jaunpur. A team from the Crime Branch reached Jaunpur, and placed him under arrest. The police found that Ram allegedly killed Shaikh in the forest, and decapitated him. Later, he reportedly used Shaikh's phone to send a message seeking the ransom. On questioning, Ram told the police that Shaikh had been harassing him over the past several months, seeking sexual favours and eventually hatched a plan to murder Shaikh and get ransom money from his family. The police said Ram was produced before the local court and remanded to police custody.
