Thanjavur accident death toll increases to six
Trichy: The number of deaths in the collision between a govt bus and a tourist van near Thanjavur rose to six after one more person succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The deceased was identified as Charles Das, 49. A 20-member group travelling from Bengaluru to Velankanni in a tourist van collided with a TNSTC bus near the Sengipatti flyover on the Trichy-Thanjavur highway on Wednesday. Four people - van driver Arockiyadas Paul, 44, Jacqueline San Diego John Bosco, 50, Nalini Charles, 49, and Jegadeesan Kempenna, 45 died on the spot, while San Diego John Bosco, 57 died on way to the hospital. The injured van passengers were rushed to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. In the early hours of Thursday, Nalini's husband Charles Das, succumbed to his injuries. Six others are under intensive care at Thanjavur MCH. A case is under investigation at Sengipatti police station under BNS sections 281n (rash driving) and 106-i (causing death by negligence). Meanwhile, inspector general of police of central region K Joshi Nirmal Kumar visited the accident spot near Sengipatti. The road where the collision took place was a diversion as the other side was undergoing repair work.

Man hacked during festival procession
Trichy: A 30-year-old man was attacked with a knife during a church festival procession near Thanjavur in the early hours of Wednesday. Police said Arkadu villagers in the Thiruvaiyaru taluk were celebrating ' ' (cart procession festival) of on Tuesday night. When devotees objected and urged them to step aside, an altercation broke out. In an ensuing clash, S Stalin was hacked with a knife. He was admitted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. Villagers alerted Wednesday morning, villagers blocked Thanjavur-Thiruvaiyaru Road alleging a lack of action from police. Thiruvaiyaru deputy superintendent of police L Arulmozhiarasu visited the spot and pacified the villagers, who withdrew the protest subsequently. The DSP told TOI that four youths — Prem, Suriya, Abhishek and Keerthirajan — were arrested following a complaint from Stalin. The Nadukaveri police registered a case under BNS sections 296, 115, 118-1, 351, and 427. The youths were remanded in judicial custody. Further investigation is on. The DSP said police personnel were deployed in the village, and the church event was completed peacefully on Wednesday.

Man sentenced to life for burning wife alive in Mayiladuthurai
The Mayiladuthurai District Sessions Court on Wednesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for setting his wife on fire following a domestic dispute in 2015. The victim, R. Jayalakshmi, 36, a resident of VOC East Street in Sirkazhi, was married to M. Purasami ,44, of Agraharam Street, Villiyanallur. Owing to marital discord, Jayalakshmi had been living with her parents and was employed as a temporary typist at the Sirkazhi municipal office. On October 19, 2015, while she was at work, Purasami allegedly confronted her in the office restroom, poured kerosene on her, and set her ablaze. She was initially admitted to the Mayiladuthurai Government Hospital and later shifted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on November 15, 2015. Based on her dying declaration, the Sirkazhi police registered a case against Purasami under charges of attempted murder and the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act. The case was later altered to murder following her death. Investigations were led by the then Inspector Azhagudurai. District Sessions Judge R. Vijayakumari, who heard the case, held Purasami guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment and a fine of ₹5,000. In default, he will undergo an additional year of imprisonment.
