Cardinals $44 Million Pitcher Listed As Trade Fit For Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies have been without their closer, Jose Alvarado, for a few weeks after the lefty was hit with a PED suspension. Alvarado will also miss the postseason. With that in mind, the Phillies desperately need to look for left-handed relievers on the trade block this season as the postseason void left by Alvarado will be very clear in October. Michael Hennelly of That Ball's Outta Here recently listed Steven Matz of the St. Louis Cardinals as a potential trade chip for the Phillies to pursue. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JUNE 26: A detail of the Philadelphia Phillies logo on a uniform against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on June 26, 2024 in Detroit, Michigan."Matz signed with the St. Louis Cardinals before the 2022 season and was used as a swingman throughout his first three years with the team. The 34-year-old has primarily been used out of the bullpen in 2025, appearing in 22 games with just two starts," Hennelly wrote. "Matz owns a 3.78 ERA with three holds and one save in 33 1/3 innings as a reliever this season. The veteran primarily works in the sixth and seventh innings for the Cardinals. "The Cardinals are 4.5 games out of first place in the NL Central and one game out of a Wild Card spot. If they fall out of the playoff picture as the deadline nears, the Cardinals could look to trade Matz, who's in the final year of a four-year, $44 million contract." Matz could be the perfect trade target for the Phillies. When Alvarado is out, he could fill in as a valuable left-handed reliever, though he won't be the caliber of pitcher needed to close games. However, the Phillies could swing another trade for a high-leverage arm besides Matz. If they can pull off trades for two relievers, with one of them being Matz, the Phillies will be in a great spot by the trade deadline. Phillies Called Potential Landing Spot In Trade For Superstar Closer
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the better teams in baseball this season, but they still need some bullpen help to solidify themselves as a true World Series contender. The trade block is likely set to have a lot of talented relievers on it in the coming weeks, but there might be a few shocking names thrown around in trade rumors. Michael Hennelly of That Ball's Outta Here recently suggested the Phillies could target Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase at the trade deadline this season. SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 22: Emmanuel Clase #48 of the Cleveland Guardians pitches against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park on June 22, 2025 in Sacramento, California. SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 22: Emmanuel Clase #48 of the Cleveland Guardians pitches against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park on June 22, 2025 in Sacramento, California."If the Guardians decide to sell at the deadline, they have an enticing asset in closer Emmanuel Clase. The right-hander is a three-time All-Star and has led the AL in saves in the previous three seasons, including a major league-leading 42 saves in 2022 and 44 saves in 2023," Hennelly wrote. "Clase is a dominant, hard-throwing closer who can reach triple digits. Although his 3.48 ERA in 2025 is a career-high, the 27-year-old's 18 saves are tied for the fourth-most in the majors. "Clase is set to make $6.4 million in 2026 and has two $10 million club options in the following two years. His success, age, and club control make him an intriguing option for reliever-needy teams like the Phillies, but it likely won't come cheap to pry Clase away from the Guardians." The likelihood of the Guardians trading Clase when he has a few years left of very affordable team control on his contract isn't high. But if any team in baseball is going to be aggressive enough toward adding a closer, it's the Phillies. The Phillies could send a trade package revolving around pitcher Mick Abel in order to land Clase. Obviously, it would take a lot more than just Abel, but the Phillies could deal from their farm system if the flame-thrower becomes available. Yankees Land Phillies All-Star Castoff in Blockbuster 4-Player Trade Idea
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees have overcome a number of injuries so far this season but the latest blow might require a dramatic solution. After losing players like Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, Marcus Stroman, Giancarlo Stanton and Jazz Chisholm Jr. to significant injuries at various points this season, the Yankees have mixed and matched their way to a first-place standing in the division. But they have faced significant questions at third base since moving Chisholm to second for opening day and those questions have now grown louder. The team lost third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera to a brutal ankle injury during their latest series in Seattle and, with oft-injured veteran DJ LeMahieu as the immediate roster addition, the Yankees might have to look to an external addition. "Considering LeMahieu's and Chisholm Jr.'s injury histories and that Cabrera will be unavailable for an extended period, New York could be in the market to trade for a third baseman at some point this season," as Matt Grazel put it for FanSided's That Ball's Outta Here. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - APRIL 22: Alec Bohm #28 of the Philadelphia Phillies warms up before the game against the New York Mets at Citi Field on April 22, 2025 in New York City.... (Photo by)With that in mind, Grazel proposed a four-player swap that would see the Yankees trade reliever Ian Hamilton and prospects Everson Pereira and Carlos Lagrange to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm. "After an offseason of being involved in trade rumors, Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm continues to be mentioned in trade speculation," Grazel wrote. "Philly may not be a candidate to re-sign him, and it may not be in their best interest to do so. His name continues to be mentioned in trade rumors with other teams that may need a third baseman." After a second-half slump from last summer persisted into the playoffs and then into this season, Bohm seems to be losing at-bats with the Phillies. He's been dropped to the bottom of the batting order and has been kept out of a handful of Phillies games altogether so far. The Phillies floated his name for a potential trade this past winter, suggesting they have made their decision on his future with the team and are just waiting for the right deal to come along. If the Yankees are willing to give up a pair of strong prospects like Pereira and Lagrange, plus a much needed right-handed bullpen addition like Hamilton, the Phillies might find that deal courtesy of New York.
