"A member among the event organizers came to meet me to seek permission for the street-side performance at Church Street," Tekkannanavar told India news outlet ANI. "I refused to give permission because Church Street gets very crowded. That is the reason he was asked the vacate the place." Sheeran reportedly shared to his Instagram Story that he did have permission to perform along Church Street, according to Reuters. Sheeran's team did not immediately respond when contacted by USA TODAY on Monday. Why is Ed Sheeran in India? Sheeran's street performance came only a few hours before he took the stage at NICE Grounds in Bengaluru as part of The +–=÷× Tour (The Mathematics Tour). Sheeran will perform two more shows in India (Shillong on Feb. 12 and Leisure Valley Ground on Feb. 15) before performing six nights at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China. On Sunday, Sheeran performed alongside Grammy-nominated Indian singer Shilpa Rao, singing Rao's "Chuttamalle" in Telugu, a native Indian language. And a few days before, he performed a remix of "Shape of You" with A. R. Rahman, an Indian composer and producer. What is busking?
