London man in coma after horror Thailand bike crash needs £100k to get home

The heartbroken family of a British man who is comatose after a motorcycle crash in Thailand are scrambling to raise £100,000 for his return to the UK, where they believe he will receive the care he needs. During a backpacking trip across Southeast Asia, Okemena Sule, 30, was tragically involved in a severe accident on February 2 on Ko Samui island. It's thought that his motorbike was hit head-on by a car, causing a brain hemorrhage. Following emergency brain surgery, Okemena has remained unconscious for nearly a month. Striving to fund his medical repatriation, the family is gathering donations through GoFundMe. His elder brother, Ibs, 33, expressed the family's desperation: "This is the hardest time of our lives. It's been very stressful. My parents and I flew to Thailand as soon as we heard and have now basically moved here." The hospital bill is already at £70,000 and the cheapest quote we've had for medical repatriation to the UK is a staggering £144,000." Despite these challenges, they remain committed to exploring every possibility to transfer him back to the UK. There is an uncertainty about whether Okemena had travel insurance, which only adds to the financial and emotional strain on the London-based family. Ibs said: "We don't know whether or not he had travel insurance and the companies make it too difficult to find out. It's impossible to access the information." The Sule family have launched a GoFundMe page in an urgent bid to secure £100,000 for medical expenses. Despite collecting £35,745, they find themselves grappling with mounting costs and dwindling time. Ibs continued: "The support, prayers, and kind messages mean the world to us. But we are still drowning in costs - and time is running out. Any donation, no matter how small, will help keep Okemena alive and ensure he receives the care he urgently needs. If you cannot donate, please share this campaign with your friends and family." To donate, visit the Sule family's GoFundMe at Get the top stories from across London directly to your inbox. Charity and banks aim to stop abusive ex-partners using mortgages as ‘weapon'

A charity is teaming up with banks to help prevent people being pushed into homelessness by abusive partners or ex-partners using joint mortgages as a "weapon". HSBC UK, First Direct and the domestic abuse charity Surviving Economic Abuse (SEA) will work together to prevent opportunities for economic abusers. Economic abuse in couples involves a current or ex-partner controlling a victim-survivor's money with long-lasting and damaging effects. Some people end up in debt and lose their home and job. READ MORE: Saudi Arabia Eid moon sighting controversy as experts warn date may be wrong READ MORE: Martin Lewis urges households to stock up on common £1.65 item before April SEA will deliver training to HSBC UK and First Direct staff, helping them to spot the signs of economic abuse and support customers who are experiencing it. The charity will also work with mortgage teams to identify opportunities and test approaches to improve support for customers experiencing joint mortgage economic abuse. Sam Smethers, interim CEO of SEA, said abusers are "weaponising" joint mortgages to devastate people's lives, adding: "Many end up trapped with the abuser or facing homelessness and destitution. "Together with HSBC UK, we'll support them to help victim-survivors take control of their finances and safely rebuild their lives." Jose Carvalho, head of wealth and personal banking at HSBC UK, said: "All providers in the finance industry and beyond have a role in tackling this issue and we are proud to partner with Surviving Economic Abuse to strengthen protections for those affected. "By working together, we can help ensure that no one is forced into homelessness or financial hardship due to an abusive partner's actions – giving victim-survivors the support they need to regain control of their finances and rebuild their lives." Tesco 'install new anti-shoplifting devices' on shelves- but customers confused how they work

Tesco's new anti-shoplifting measures have left customers bewildered. The new contraptions have been captured in a video posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, which has left the internet in a frenzy. The clear plastic covers can be seen positioned in front of a shelf of chocolate products.. In the video, customers are able to freely slide them left and right to uncover the products underneath. The covers make a loud screeching noise when moved. It would seem that they would make it harder to access the items quickly, although Tesco has not yet confirmed how the new covers are meant to work. It is also not yet clear if the new contraptions have been rolled out in all stories or just a certain selection of them. ( kirkpap1 ) — London & UK Street News (@CrimeLdn) March 14, 2025 The video posted to X has been causing quite a commotion - amassing 1.3k comments and 6.3k likes in about a day-and-a-half. One commenter posted: "So how can you actually get the item? They do not have enough staff to be getting these items for people." Another pointed out: "What's stopping someone from simply prying the damn things open and taking what they want?" However, another user had one potential theory behind the new plastic covers. They posted: "They take your fingerprints if you steal and build a case to which they don't have to chase you across the parking lot thus avoiding public videos and backlash on the shopping establishment" Another theory suggested that the loud noise the covers make when slid was meant to attract staff members. Perhaps the most likely theory posted was that they had been installed to slow thieves down and deter "flash mob robberies." Shoplifting offences in London have soared by 50 per cent according to the latest figures. The Met Police documented 78,512 cases of shoplifting in the year leading up to September - a significant rise from 52,478 offences recorded the previous year. Across England and Wales, police forces reported a total of 493,000 offences in this same period - a 23 per cent increase from the 402,000 incidents in the prior 12 months. Trade Association British Retail Consortium has described the situation as shoplifting "spiralling out of control", citing their survey that indicates over 2,000 incidents occurring daily, including assaults on staff, threats with weapons, and racial and sexual abuse. Tesco Stores has not yet commented on the new anti-shoplifting measures. Got a story? Please get in touch at Get the top stories from across London directly to your inbox. London weather to see temperatures return to 17C after hail and snow

London is experiencing some pretty wacky fluctuations in weather at the moment as temperatures are set to rise to 17C next week following a flurry of snow and hail. After last weekend saw highs of 18C, temperatures dipped to a chilly 5C on Thursday (March 13) amid a flurry of hail and snow which was seen across the capital. Videos and photos showed hail and snow falling in Sidcup, while similar scenes were spotted in Canary Wharf and the SE16 postcode. This may have taken Londoners by surprise considering the city had reached a balmy 18C the week before. But now things are set to warm-up yet again in what is proving to be a wacky period for London weather. Temperatures are forecast to reach a Spring-like 17C by next Wednesday (March 19). READ MORE: New London snow map shows the exact time a flurry is forecast to hit READ MORE: Snow and hail fall in London as temperatures dip to 5C Tomorrow (Sunday, March 16) is set to be 'frosty and mainly sunny' with clouds set to then creep in. There will then be some sunny spells with temperatures of 10C. However, temperatures will start to really improve at the beginning of next week. Tuesday (March 18) will see temperatures increase to 12C, with clear sunny skies. On Wednesday (March 19) these will rise to 17C, although some clouds will then creep in. Thursday (March 20) and Friday (March 21) will remain balmy at 16C and 15C respectively. The Met Office forecast says: 'Monday cloudy start but then becoming brighter, with temperatures near normal. Tuesday and Wednesday sunny, breezy and with temperatures rising a little by day. Each night a widespread frost develops.' Sunday, March 16 - Sunny changing to overcast by lunchtime, 11C Monday, March 17 - Overcast changing to sunny intervals by lunchtime, 11C Tuesday, March 18 - Sunny, 12C Wednesday, March 19 - Sunny changing to partly cloudy by early evening, 17C Thursday, March 20 - Sunny changing to partly cloudy by early evening, 16C Friday, March 21 - Sunny intervals changing to cloudy by late morning, 15C Long range forecast (Wednesday 19 March - 28 March) - The Met Office said: "High pressure is expected to be centred to the east of the UK initially, with a good deal of fine, dry and reasonably sunny weather in a south to southeasterly flow. "Temperatures are expected to rise, to well above average in some areas. Later in the week there will likely be a gradual transition to less settled conditions from west to east, as low pressure becomes more dominant with an increasing chance of rain or showers by the weekend and into the final week of March, perhaps heavy in places. Temperatures, initially above average, will likely trend back closer to normal, although with more cloud this will tend to reduce the risk of frost to an extent." Got a story?
