Two-year-old debutants ready to reign in the rain at Warwick Farm

A group of exciting two-year-old debutants are set to steal the show in the wet at Wednesday's Warwick Farm meeting. And with most having trialled well on rain-affected ground, the 1100m Maiden Hcp sprint could quickly emerge as a strong juvenile form reference heading towards winter. While the worst of the relentless rain has seemingly headed north, intermittent falls through Tuesday and Wednesday will keep the track in the heavy range, with the rail true. Certainly, stables have planned for such trying conditions, with most races dominated in early markets by runners very adept in heavy going. Leading the line-up of first-starters is exciting Randwick-based filly Nazwah, which opens her career behind two progressive trials. A talented daughter of 2016 Golden Slipper winner Capitalist in the Peter Snowden stable, Nazwah had trialled strongly, cruising home to win the most recent in soft ground nearly four weeks ago after travelling wide in the run. Jockey Regan Bayliss stays aboard for her debut. But the challengers are likely to come thick and fast. Change My Address, a filly by powerhouse sprinter Exceedance in the John Sargent yard, also makes her debut behind two smart trials, winning the latest in heavy ground by nearly four lengths. Also likely to attract market support on debut is Marinera, a filly by prolific wet-track sire Exceed And Excel, and trained by Bjorn Baker, which has won both lead-up trials. While Dundeel colt Master Of The Air is a big market watch resuming off a strong heavy-track trial for the Chris Waller stable. Loading

Delta and other airline stocks fall as an analyst sees 'short-term pain' ahead

Airline stocks are in for some turbulence, according to global investment bank Jefferies (JEF). The firm issued a report today entitled 'The Air Comes Out of Airlines' in which it downgraded American (AAL) and Delta (DAL) stocks from buy to hold. Air Canada and Southwest (LUV) have been downgraded from hold to underperform. Air Canada is especially vulnerable to cross-border tariffs and tensions. Jefferies kept United Airlines (UAL) as its lone buy recommendation, based mainly on opportunities beyond 2025. Still, it revised its price target downward by 48%. The firm blamed the dour outlook for airline stocks on declining consumer and corporate confidence along with fears about tariffs. 'Consumer sentiment continues to disappoint, now at 4-yr lows, and tariffs take effect this week after delays affecting business confidence,' the report says, adding that 'GDP-driven businesses like airlines are in for short-term pain.' The report and negative outlook sent airline stocks tumbling Tuesday. Jefferies' cautionary note comes after airlines put out their own warnings with their recent quarterly earnings. Last month, Delta lowered its outlook, citing reduced confidence among consumers and businesses and economic uncertainty. American Airlines and JetBlue (JBLU) followed suit in cutting guidance for 2025. Southwest, meanwhile, unveiled a range of moves to lift revenue, including charging for many checked bags. It also doubled its cost-cutting goal, and now aims to slash expenses by more than $1 billion by 2027. —Will Gavin contributed to this article. For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
