Bryan Cranston details the negative impact of fame on his marriage
Actor Bryan Cranston may be juggling a number of new acting jobs at the moment, but his role as husband to his wife of 36 years is still his number one priority.
Speaking at a Ted Talk during the Tribeca Film Festival in Spring Studios, New York City, the 69 year old 'Breaking Bad' star opened up on the pressures of fame on a relationship, and the impact his stardom has had on his wife, 71 year old actress Robin Dearden.
Cranston admitted that fame can have a 'devastating impact on any marriage,' and noted a number of times his wife has had to stand aside on the red carpet so photographers could get a solo shot of him. Bryan Cranston and his wife Robin Dearden. Pic: Gregg DeGuire/WireImage
On the subject of his runaway success after both 'Malcolm in the Middle' and later 'Breaking Bad', Cranston told moderator Cynthia Littleton, co-editor-in-chief of Variety, that he was 'very lucky' that 'opportunity grew so fast' early on in his career, but now the opportunities he's presented with are 'larger than' his ambition right now.
'Absolutely, the luck and good fortune I've had creates that ascension of opportunity. But, then you are working just as hard. It's a better way to work than not having a job offer, but the offers are flooding, and you have to then sort and put people off and figure out and go, 'Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God. How do I deal with this?''
He continued, 'And then there's the factor of this weird thing called celebrity and fame and what that does, and it offsets your personal relationship.'
'I've been married for 36 years and we've seen it like, 'Oh wow, what's happening?'' Bryan Cranston and his wife Robin Dearden. Pic:Bryan's wife Robin rarely appears alongside him on red carpets, preferring to take a step back.
Robin, who is 71, and herself an actor, lent her voice to a character in a short animated video, The Alchemist of Cecil Street last year and before that she had starred in the comedy film Chicanery back in 2017.
Meanwhile, busier than ever, Cranston just premiered his new film, 'Everything's Going to Be Great', at the Tribeca Film Festival, and released his new film 'The Phoenician Scheme'.
He also says he has eight other projects on the go at the moment, including a new reboot of the ever-popular series Malcolm in the Middle which is coming out later this year, and something he says is 'just as much fun' as the original which first hit our screens 25 years ago.
