David Ortiz Fires Shots at Rafael Devers, Giants After Stunning Trade
David Ortiz Fires Shots at Rafael Devers, Giants After Stunning Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Longtime Boston Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers now plays for the San Francisco Giants, and Red Sox legend David Ortiz doesn't envy him one bit. Advertisement 'I prefer to play in Boston than freezing-(expletive) San Francisco for the next 10 years,' Ortiz said. Ortiz, who now works as a special assistant to the Red Sox, had plenty to say on Sunday's unexpected blockbuster. Boston dealt Devers, the face of the franchise and a three-time All-Star, to the Giants on Sunday night for starting pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks, along with outfield prospect James Tibbs III and pitching prospect Jose Bello. Speaking candidly with Fox Sports teammate and The Athletic MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, Ortiz said both sides hold responsibility for the relationship breaking down. Devers, a natural third baseman, turned heads in spring training when he refused to move to first base or DH after Alex Bregman's arrival. 'I think it would be easier, if they pay you that kind of money, to go, '[Expletive] it, let's do it,'' Ortiz said of Devers, who signed a 10-year, $313.5 million extension in January 2023. Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz and third baseman Rafael DeversGregory Fisher-Imagn Images 'But players' egos play a big role sometimes,' Ortiz continued, adding, 'And guess what? At the end of the day ... you know you did wrong. Once you mature, you understand.' Advertisement Devers joins the Giants hitting .272 with 15 home runs, 58 RBI, an AL-high 56 walks, and an impressive .905 OPS. It is unclear if he'll primarily play DH or first base in San Francisco, as All-Star Matt Chapman is entrenched at the hot corner. 'That's a message for all young players who think they turn out to be bigger than the game,' Ortiz said. 'I'm not saying that Devers was like that. He's humble. He's a good kid. But sometimes when you're young and immature, you (don't realize that).' Devers, 28, had not addressed Ortiz's comments as of publication. Ronald Acuña Jr. on Braves' reaction to Jarred Kelenic mistake: ‘They would take me out'
ATLANTA — Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. called into question manager Brian Snitker's reaction, or lack thereof, to an incident in Saturday's game when Jarred Kelenic was thrown out at second base after not running hard out of the batter's box on a fly ball that Kelenic thought would be a home run. The ball caromed off the right-field wall and Kelenic was thrown out at second base in the sixth inning of what was then a tied game. Kelenic stayed in the game and Snitker was dismissive of a question about the incident afterward, acting as if Kelenic did nothing wrong. Advertisement When it was mentioned on the social media platform X Sunday morning, Acuña, who is in Florida rehabbing from May 2024 knee surgery, replied in a message, 'If it were me, they would take me out of the game.' The message was deleted before the start of Sunday afternoon's series-finale win against the Minnesota Twins. Asked later about Acuña's comment, Snitker said all base running incidents are different but did not expound on the topic. He said he didn't watch Kelenic's play as it unfolded but once he saw video of it Sunday morning, he 'talked to (Kelenic) about it.' He also said he didn't see Acuña's message. Ronald Acuña Jr. on X 👀 — The Athletic MLB (@TheAthleticMLB) April 20, 2025 Saturday's incident was similar to one in August 2019 when Acuña, the reigning NL Rookie of the Year at the time, was removed from a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers for not hustling on a fly ball that hit off that same brick wall, forcing Acuña to settle for a single. Snitker removed him from that game a half-inning later and said after that game, 'He didn't run. You've got to run. It's not going to be acceptable here. As a teammate you're responsible for 24 other guys. That name on the front is a lot more important than the name on the back of that jersey. You can't do that. 'We're trying to accomplish something and do something special here, and personal things have to be put on the back burner. You just can't let your team down like that.'
