Netflix's A Widow's Game draws inspiration from this infamous real-life case, widely known in Spain as La Viuda Negra de Patraix ('The Black Widow of Patraix'). In the film, the character Maje is based on María Jesús Moreno, her murdered husband Arturo represents Antonio Navarro, and Salvador Rodrigo is portrayed as the lover-turned-killer.
In August 2017, 36-year-old engineer Antonio Navarro Cerdán was found brutally stabbed in a garage in Valencia, Spain. Homicide detective Eva led the investigation and quickly grew suspicious of Antonio's wife, María Jesús Moreno known as Maje after inconsistencies emerged in her story. As detectives dug deeper, they uncovered Maje's double life, she was involved in several affairs and had manipulated her boyfriend Salvador Rodrigo into murdering her husband.

Maje had provided Salvador with detailed information about Antonio's routines and granted him access to the garage where the attack took place. Initially, Salvador claimed he acted alone in order to save Maje, but he later said that Maje was indeed involved in the whole case and she made him do it.

In 2019, Maje was sentenced to 22 years in prison, while Salvador was handed a 17-year sentence.
Where is Maje from A Widow's Game now?
As reported by TIME, Maje is currently serving her 22-year sentence at Fontcalent Prison in Alicante, Spain. During her incarceration, she became pregnant by another inmate and gave birth while in police custody in July 2023. She now resides in the prison's mother-child unit.
