Primary school closed today following major fire nearby

A primary school has been closed today, May 23, after a major fire nearby. The Olive Tree Primary School is closed after the blaze, which took place on an industrial estate adjacent to it. A receptionist at the school confirmed to The Bolton News that the school is closed today, and that remote classes will be running. Parents and children could also be seen being turned away from the entrance on Adelaide Street this morning. This comes after the large fire, which took place at an industrial unit off the street. For live updates on the incident, see our blog here: Read more: Roads shut as firefighters deal with fire at industrial unit Read more: The number of taxi drivers have had their licences revoked this year so far Fire services were called out at just before 10pm last night, with "bright red" flames seen high above the building. Eight fire engines alongside specialist appliances including the Aerial Unit, Scorpion and Turntable Ladder were called to the incident. St Helens Road was closed in both directions while crews worked alongside partners to contain the large fire which produced a lot of smoke. Closures remain in place this morning as firefighters continue to dampen down the area.

Teams from Bolton take to the pitch at Bolton Wanderers for the annual special match

Everyone was a winner when the Toughsheet Stadium hosted its annual charity football match. This year, The Bolton News team found themselves playing against ebuyer, the back of the shirt sponsor of Bolton Wanderers. A fantastic game of football was played on an unseasonably hot day with The Bolton News winning narrowly with a 2-1 win. The day, though, is all about raising as much money as possible for Bolton Hospice. Mark Fry, Head of Sales, for The Bolton News said: "This event is one of the highlights of the year and since we started this a number of years ago, we have raised thousands of pounds for the hospice through Bolton News advertisers and readers, plus this year team ebuyer. "I cannot thank Rich Marsden from ebuyer enough for not just raising thousands of pounds but supplying raffle prices and auction prizes plus Jack from Fairmont Recruitment who kindly donated a signed Bolton Wanderers shirt for the raffle. "Special thanks to Clint Hibbert from Harrisons Estate Agents for his support to help put this amazing game on." (Image: Paul Currie) Kathryn Willett of Bolton Hospice said: "Thursday was a fab day for football and fundraising! "Team The Bolton News and Team ebuyer took part in a Charity football match at Bolton Wanderers Football Club which helped raise an eye-watering £5,000 for the hospice. "The weather was perfect and a great day was had by all. Thanks so much to Mark Fry from Bolton News and Rich Marsden from ebuyer for putting on such a enjoyable day! Carl Sanders from Bolton Wanderer said: "It was a fantastic day from start to finish. Raising £5,000 for Bolton Hospice is a brilliant result and shows the power of Club partners working together. "Moments like these really highlight the strength of the Bolton Wanderers family and the authenticity of our partnerships." Rich Marsden of ebuyer said, 'ebuyer was delighted to support the day and although the result did not go our way to help raise £5,000 is something we are immensely proud of, the hospice does fantastic jobs" target="_blank">work so it's only right that they are the real winners of the day, we will be back!'
