🎥 OTD: Holland strikes as Ireland draws Cameroon at the 2002 World Cup
The 2002 FIFA World Cup is often viewed as one of the more memorable tournaments in football history, and the Republic of Ireland undoubtedly had a hand in that. It was on this day 23 years ago that The Boys in Green under Mick McCarthy kick-started their summer campaign against African giants Cameroon. Advertisement After going a goal down in the first half thanks to a 39th-minute strike from cult hero Patrick Mboma, Ireland would respond after the break through popular midfielder Matt Holland, whose low drive would slip into the bottom corner. A credible 1-1 draw to begin play in Group E would springboard Ireland to a second 1-1 draw on matchday two against world superpower Germany before a 3-0 win against Saudi Arabia saw them book passage to the round of 16. Ireland went on to fight heroically against Spain in a 1-1 affair before losing 4-2 on penalties, but it was a tournament they certainly would be proud of. 📸 Stu Forster - 2002 Getty Images

🎥 OTD 1987: Ireland famously beat Brazil with a Liam Brady goal 💚
It's a consensus and undisputed opinion in Ireland that their greatest footballing era came under the management of the legendary Jack Charlton. On this day in 1987, he masterminded a famous friendly win over Brazil in what was just his 11th game in charge, with a helping hand from the iconic Liam Brady. At a raucous Lansdowne Road, Brady scored his ninth and final goal for his country with a typically smart finish to knock off the then-four time World Cup champions. Brady himself has said it is the favourite goal of his international career, and it's easy to see why. On this day in 1️⃣9️⃣8️⃣7️⃣Liam Brady's strike proved to be the difference as The Boys in Green recorded a famous 1-0 victory over Brazil at Lansdowne Road 😎🇮🇪 — Ireland Football ⚽️🇮🇪 (@IrelandFootball) May 23, 2025 The Arsenal icon would not be part of the glory that followed with suspension ruling him out of EURO 88 and that generational win over England, and by the time Italia 90 rolled around, he was not in Charlton's plans. However, it's safe to say he left an indelible mark on Irish football, and that he remains the country's finest talent in many eyes. 📸 Simon Bruty
