'This one is special': Illinois football assistant shows off Citrus Bowl championship ring

Illinois football had a turnaround season under fourth-year coach Bret Bielema, winning 10 games for the first time in two-plus decades, including a victory in the Citrus Bowl. At least one coach has received his championship ring from the big bowl win, as receivers coach Justin Stepp posted multiple photos of the bling to last week. The other side has a last name and the program's 100-year logo. Inside the ring are engravings of "The Land of Lincoln Trophy" and "The Cannon" — won in 2024 in rivalry victories against Northwestern and Purdue. Also engraved inside are the initials "DD," a tribute to late Illini assistant Dana Dimel, who died in December. Time, TV revealed for Purdue football's game at Notre Dame, a marquee test in Barry Odom's rebuild

Purdue football's trip to Notre Dame to battle for the Shillelagh Trophy received an afternoon kickoff. The Fighting Irish announced Monday the Sept. 20 game against the Boilermakers in South Bend will kick off at 3:30 p.m. NBC will broadcast the game. The longtime in-state rivals are in the third year of a series which is scheduled to continue through at least 2028. That agreement started with a game in South Bend in 2021 and resumed with last season's game at Ross-Ade Stadium. This will be only Purdue's second game at Notre Dame since 2012. The teams played annually from 1946 through 2014 before pausing the series. This will be Barry Odom's first game against Notre Dame as Purdue coach. The Fighting Irish won 66-7 in Ross-Ade last season — a historically embarrassing result which triggered the beginning of the end for former coach Ryan Walters. Notre Dame, which lost to Ohio State in last year's national championship game, has won nine straight games in the series. Purdue's last victory came in 2007. It last won in South Bend in 2004. Purdue plays nonconference games against Ball State and Southern Illinois to open the season. It plays Big Ten opponent USC at home before traveling to Notre Dame. An idle week follows that game before conference play resumes. The Boilermakers' next game is also for a traveling trophy — The Cannon against Illinois. It closes the season with the Old Oaken Bucket game against Indiana.
