Govt directs CISF to check cargo, in-line baggage amid tighter security
The directives also authorise CISF personnel to perform random checks and oversee access control to these "critical" facilities (airports), a spokesperson added The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on Saturday said it has extended an additional security cover to temporarily supervise cargo operations and in-line hold baggage screening system at 69 civil airports of the country under its counter-terrorist cover. A spokesperson for the paramilitary force said the move has been initiated following a directive issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) on May 9 "temporarily" extending CISF's cover to these processes in "direct response" to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and the subsequent security scenario in the country. This new arrangement will be in place till May 18, the spokesperson said. The CISF usually is only entrusted to frisk passengers and their cabin baggage. The cargo and In-line Hold Baggage Screening System (ILHBSS) checking was done by private security staff engaged by the airlines and airport operators. "The enhancement of CISF's mandate is essential to reinforce security arrangements at all civil airports," the spokesperson said. He added that the CISF has responded immediately and resumed "oversight" over cargo and baggage operations. The CISF will also "oversee" operations and the security staff of airport operators for ILHBSS, he said. The directives also authorise CISF personnel to perform random checks and oversee access control to these "critical" facilities (airports), the spokesperson added. All the airports under cover of the CISF have "already implemented" the new strengthened system, he said. Prior to this directive, CISF's deployment as the primary aviation security force did not explicitly extend to the direct security and screening of cargo operations and the ILHBSS, officials explained. The decision aims to introduce a crucial secondary layer of security checks to enhance aviation security, he said. CISF takes over security of Mizoram Lengpui Airport
Aizawl, The Central Industrial Security Force on Thursday officially took over the security of Lengpui Airport, Mizoram's lone domestic airport located about 35 km from state capital Aizawl. Mizoram being sandwiched between Myanmar and Bangladesh, Lengpui airport is a vital link for India's Act East policy, which aims to enhance connectivity and economic ties with South East Asia. Mizoram Director General of Police Anil Shukla inducted the CISF in a ceremony held at the airport on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, Shukla said that the deployment of CISF at Lengpui airport will enhance security not only in Mizoram but in the entire northeast. He said that Mizoram, although known to be one of the peaceful states in the country, has witnessed a rapid increase in trafficking of contraband from other countries in recent years and the state police alone are not enough to curb the menace. "The takeover of security at Lengpui airport by the CISF will also help and strengthen the state police's initiatives to maintain law and order in the state," Shukla said. Officials said that a contingent of 121 CISF personnel, led by a Deputy Commandant, will initially take charge. The deployment will later scale up to an authorised strength of 214 personnel, replacing the existing joint security arrangement by the state police and Central Reserve Police Force , which had been guarding the airport since 1999, they said. The decision to station CISF at Lengpui airport aligns with the Centre's broader initiative to strengthen security across civil aviation facilities nationwide. In addition to their core security responsibilities, CISF personnel will work closely with local authorities and other stakeholders to develop and implement advanced security protocols that are effective, convenient and people-friendly, officials said. These enhanced measures aim to provide passengers with a secure and seamless travel experience, while proactively addressing emerging threats such as terrorism, smuggling and other unlawful activities, they said. The event was attended by CISF IG Deepak Verma, senior officers and officials from Mizoram police, Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau , Aviation department, Airports Authority of India , CRPF, airlines and other stakeholders.
