"Of course, we could have just stopped and it probably would have been an easy point to stop, but we definitely didn't want to. "We have two new people in the band who have been hugely accepted and welcomed, but in many ways it does amaze me that we are still here all these years later, after all of the ups and downs."

Cycling great Bradley Wiggins admits cocaine addiction after retiring

Sir Bradley Wiggins has revealed that Lance Armstrong reached out to help during his recovery from being a 'functioning addict' who did 'a s***load of cocaine'. Wiggins, 45, has opened up on the extent of his self-harm post-retirement in his new book, The Chain, and in an interview with the Observer has revealed his children feared he would kill himself until he quit using cocaine a year ago. Wiggins, who became the first British rider to win the Tour de France in 2012, struggled to cope with his sudden fame. He went on to open the London Games that summer, where he also won the gold medal in the time trial, resulting in him being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year before he was knighted in 2013. However, after claiming a fifth Olympic gold medal on the track in Rio de Janeiro, Wiggins struggled with his mental health, which only worsened when Russian hackers leaked his medical information in 2016, revealing his trade team (Sky) had applied for Therapeutic Use Exemptions for powerful corticosteroids before some of the biggest races of his career, including the 2012 Tour. Wiggins always denied cheating, insisting the drugs were to treat pollen allergies. Questions were also asked in Parliament about a 'Jiffy bag' allegedly sent to him after one race, and the possible blurring of ethical lines in Team Sky's use of medicines. Wiggins' health spiralled in retirement.

Bradley Wiggins opens up on cocaine addiction that left his son scared he'd die

Cycling legend Sir Bradley Wiggins was addicted to cocaine for many years following his retirement from the sport in 2016 and has sought help from infamous cheat Lance Armstrong Sir Bradley Wiggins has revealed how he overcame a crippling addiction to cocaine which left his children worried that he was close to death. Wiggins is a Tour de France and five-time Olympic cycling champion, but his life began to spiral out of control following his retirement from the sport. The 45-year-old gave up cycling in 2016 after a wave of bad publicity centred around his involvement in the infamous 'Jiffy bag' scandal. Two investigations looked into what was inside a medical package delivered to Wiggins for a race in 2011, but failed to do so, while his use of therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) also drew suspicion. ‌ The media fallout plus unresolved trauma impacted Wiggins heavily and saw him plunge into addiction once he left sport behind. He went from being the first British man to win the Tour de France and the winner of Olympic gold medals in Athens, Beijing, Rio de Janeiro and London to an addict. ‌ Wiggins has detailed his struggles in his new autobiography, entitled The Chain, which lifts the lid on the extent of his problems. 'There were times my son thought I was going to be found dead in the morning," he told The Observer. "I was a functioning addict. People wouldn't realise. I was high most of the time for many years. 'I was doing s***loads of cocaine. I had a really bad problem. My kids were going to put me in rehab. I was walking a tightrope. I realised I had a huge problem. I had to stop. I'm lucky to be here. I was a victim of all my own choices, for many years. 'I already had a lot of self-hatred, but I was amplifying it. It was a form of self-harm and self-sabotage. It was not the person I wanted to be. I realised I was hurting a lot of people around me.' Wiggins managed to quit cocaine a year ago without going to rehab, but remarkably, he found help in the form of the ultimate cycling pariah: Lance Armstrong. The self-confessed doper reached out a helping hand to Wiggins, after previously looking out for German rider Jan Ullrich, who also had addiction issues. 'He'd been through a similar thing with Jan,' Wiggins added. 'They'd try and get hold of me, but couldn't find where I was. My son speaks to Lance a lot. He'd ask my son, 'How's your Dad?' Ben would say, 'I've not heard from him for a couple of weeks, I know he's living in a hotel.' 'They wouldn't hear from me for days on end. I can talk about these things candidly now. There was an element of me living a lie, in not talking about it. "There's no middle ground for me. I can't just have a glass of wine. If I have a glass of wine, then I'm buying drugs. My proclivity to addiction was easing the pain that I lived with.'

Cycling champion Bradley Wiggins says he was a cocaine addict and is 'lucky' to be alive

Former Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins has revealed he became addicted to cocaine after retiring from cycling. In an interview with British newspaper The Observer, the five-time Olympic gold medalist said he is "lucky" to be alive. "There were times my son thought I was going to be found dead in the morning," the 45-year-old Wiggins said. "I was a functioning addict. People wouldn't realize. I was high for most of the time for years." The British cyclist was a gold medalist in four straight Olympics from 2004 and won the Tour in 2012. He retired in 2016. In 2022, he made an allegation in an interview with Men's Health UK magazine that he was sexually groomed by a coach, whose name he did not reveal, when he was 13 years old. In a soon-to-be-published autobiograph, The Chain, Wiggins detailed how his life spiraled into a cycle of debt and addiction after retirement from the sport. Wiggins told the Observer his cocaine addiction became a "really bad problem" and he was "walking a tightrope." He quit his addiction a year ago, the newspaper said. "I already had a lot of self-hatred, but I was amplifying it," he said. "It was a form of self-harm and self-sabotage. It was not the person I wanted to be. I realized I was hurting a lot of people around me."
