BU seeking community input during president search

VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Binghamton University has officially launched the search for its next president and is looking to the community for support. BU announced on Thursday that it has begun the process to find current BU President Harvey Stenger's successor. Stenger announced in October 2024 that the Spring 2025 semester would be his last with the university. Stenge, who has served as president of BU for the past 13 years, says his decision to leave was due to wanting to spend more time with his family and explore other opportunities with them. BU says the search marks a significant moment in the University's history as it seeks a leader to build on Stenger's legacy and guide the institution into its next chapter of excellence. Binghamton previously credited Stenger with leading an era of growth and expansion that established the University's reputation as one of the top public institutions in the nation. The Binghamton University Presidential Search Committee, which consists of representatives from the University Council, faculty, students, alumni, the Binghamton University Foundation, and other key stakeholders, has been formed to oversee the process of selecting an individual or the position. BU will also be assisted by WittKieffer, a nationally recognized executive search firm, to assist in identifying and recruiting top candidates. Stenger delivers final State of the University speech Binghamton says it is committed to being inclusive and transparent during the hiring process, so it is adopting a representational approach, which strikes a balance between an open and a closed search. BU is inviting students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to provide input on the qualities they believe the next president should possess. BU encourages all stakeholders to participate in order to shape the leadership criteria that will define the selection process. Binghamton has established a website that will serve as a central hub where community members can learn about the search process and timeline, receive updates from the search committee, and submit feedback on the desired attributes and experience of the next University president. 'This is a defining moment for Binghamton University, and through an inclusive search process, the University is confident that it will attract an outstanding leader to continue its trajectory of excellence,' said Kate Madigan, chair of the Binghamton University Presidential Search Committee. 'Community input will play a crucial role in ensuring that the next president reflects the values and aspirations of the University.' The Presidential Search Committee is responsible for conducting a national search of candidates. The committee will then present a list of at least five highly qualified candidates to the Binghamton University Council. The Council will recommend three finalists to SUNY Chancellor John King, along with an assessment of their strengths and qualifications. The Chancellor will make a final recommendation to the SUNY Board of Trustees, which will approve the appointment of Binghamton University's next president. WATCH: Gov.
