'Superman' villain the Engineer shows off her skills in full-length trailer
There are a lot of characters popping up in Superman, the new James Gunn-directed movie that helps launch a new era of DC superheroes on the big screen. Though, one we haven't seen much of so far is the Engineer, played by María Gabriela De Faría. The figure, a seemingly secondary villain to main antagonist Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), finally gets to show her stuff in the full-length trailer, which dropped Wednesday. In DC Comics, the original Engineer would use nanotechnology to alter his body, but his successor, one Ms. Angela Spica, was made of liquid machinery who could turn her limbs into weapons. Gunn's incarnation of the Engineer in Superman seems to be a hybrid of both. Dressed all in black, María Gabriela De Faría's doesn't appear to be made of liquid machinery, but can craft various weapons during a big battle in a baseball field against the Man of Steel himself (David Corenswet). It also appears this Engineer is in league with Luthor, or at the very least will be in league with him. The two show up later on in the trailer to attack the Fortress of Solitude, Superman's arctic headquarters. Gunn previously teased on social media that De Faría plays the Engineer "to sinister perfection." Superman, in theaters this July 11, is set a decent enough time into Clark Kent's tenure as the superhero, and not everyone in Metropolis (or the world) seems to be a fan of his. He and ace reporter Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) are dating, and she clearly knows Clark is Superman. The trailer teases a scene in which Lois enthusiastically takes Clark up on his offer to interview him as Superman and proceeds to grill him on public perception. The preview also shows new looks at Nathan Fillion as Earth-based Green Lantern Guy Gardner; Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi's Michael Holt, a.k.a. Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan's Metamorpho; Wendell Pierce as The Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White; Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.; and all the characters, Gunn clarified this will still very much be a Superman movie. "We have robots and monster babies and giant kaiju and all of that stuff. But that is also grounded around these incredibly real relationships with a couple that has started dating a few months ago, and now they're really learning the ins and outs of each other," he previously told Entertainment Weekly. "What's good about them? What's not so good about them? And what are their ideals like? We have Lois Lane, who's a pragmatist, and Superman is an idealist, and how does that work together?"
