Destiny 2's ‘Arms Week' Brings Some Unwelcome, Ill-Timed Surprises

Destiny 2 Destiny 2 has brought back the concept of Arms Week in The Edge of Fate, a new event meant to paper over the fact that there are no more week-to-week story developments or missions in this expansion, due to there not being an attached season anymore. It sounds pretty cool, a unique set of weapons for players to hunt and this time, that includes the first ever spread shot Hand Cannon, which is about as close as we're going to get to a sawed-off shotgun in the game. The problem? Bungie just cannot resist badgering players for 'engagement,' or doing its best to push microtransactions. Add in some more baffling decisions on top of that, and what should have been an easy layup is yet again another series of annoyances. I promise you I am as sick as writing these up as you are of reading them, but it just keeps happening. The problems: Destiny 2 Destiny 2 FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder The fact that I can find this many flaws with a single, seemingly simple week-long event feels like a metaphor for everything Bungie has been getting wrong lately. The good news? The spread shot Hand Cannon is pretty fun, at least. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

Destiny 2's New Metroid Ball Mechanic Might Be The Worst Thing It's Ever Added

Destiny is a game about orbs. It began with a giant orb (The Traveler) hovering over the last city on earth in a post-apocalyptic near future. The main thing you do in the sci-fi MMO is shoot enemies to get loot, which they leave behind in various colored orbs. Most raids involved at least one orb-based mechanic. And now Destiny 2 has taken the orb to its natural conclusion: transforming players into one. The newest expansion, The Edge of Fate, has a new mechanic called Matterspark that makes players become balls of light that roll around like little glowing Samus Arans to navigate secret tube passageways. It is without a doubt the worst thing Destiny has ever forced me to do. That's not hyperbole, nor is intended as a slight against the very thoughtful developers at Bungie. I simply do not like taking a break from what Destiny 2 does very well—shooting—to do something it does very poorly—platforming as a third-person orb. It feels floaty, sluggish, and a bit chaotic, like trying to navigate a marble through a wooden labyrinth using a magnetic tether. The effect is mildly dizzying. It's especially bad on PC. It doesn't help that Matterspark is one of the very first things The Edge of Fate campaign introduces you to. In addition to transforming into slithering sphere to reach new areas, there are also generators you can only power when you're an electric ball, forcing you to constantly shift between forms to bring down barriers and progress the mission. My friend came over last night for dinner. He's one of the people I keep trying to convince to play Destiny 2 with me. He saw me puttering around combat like a golf ball stuck in a sand trap and howled with laughter. There is absolutely no way I'm convincing him to buy The Edge of Fate now. I was skeptical of Matterspark, since Bungie originally revealed it in a livestream in May. Turning into a ball and reaching secret places in the Metroid franchise is cool because those games are specifically designed around exploration, backtracking, and experimentation. Destiny 2 is not. It's a game about loading into a sci-fi obstacle course and ruthlessly murdering everything in sight as quickly as possible. It's certainly played with more open-ended exploration over the years, both in terms of platforming and in terms of shooting puzzles that unlock hidden secrets. Turning into an orb, unfortunately, doesn't play to either of those strengths. It makes platforming feel worse and disables my guns. In that way, Matterspark is part of a worrying trend in modern Destiny, one that pursues novelty at the risk of sidelining the reason I actually want to play the game: the best-feeling shooting of any FPS ever. The Edge of Fate makes a pretty poor first-impression in general. My Destiny 2 hype train currently has a full head of steam, but it's already threatening to be derailed. I don't like Kepler yet, the new zone which is sparrow-less and feels overly constricted while at the same time lacking a clear vibe to spark the imagination. It's a lot of rocks with alien pustules growing on them. I don't like the new streamlined Ops menu that feels like a Call of Duty HQ funnel, or that the more creative planet map it replaces has been desaturated to signal its forced obsolescence. It's nice—a relief even!—seeing gear scores reset to 10 as we begin the power climb anew, but I would prefer to skip over the blues (rare loot) and get right to the good stuff again (purple legendries/exotics). The new gear chase and upcoming raid might be The Edge of Fate's saving grace. A completely new system means chasing new weapons and armor in order to take advantage of the most powerful builds. The grind could be fun. It could also be incredible tedious. But I'll take that over being subjected to another Matterspark objective. . For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Destiny 2 'Lootapalooza' Derailed As Fans Mass-Delete Characters

Bungie has been paving the way for Destiny 2's upcoming The Edge of Fate expansion with a week of free loot for players. Once every day, fans can log in, visit the Emissary vendor, and claim an Infinite Nonary Engram, which drops all sorts of cosmetics players normally have to pay real money for. Not content with just one a day, players quickly discovered a trick for farming them en masse and Bungie just as quickly said 'OMG stop!' YouTuber Cheese Forever has a a quick explainer of how the glitch works and it's incredibly simple. Players go claim their daily Infinite Nonary Engram like they normally would. Then they delete one of the characters on their account. Then they go back and claim another Engram. It really is that easy. To keep repeating the trick you just have to keep making new characters and deleting them, something especially easy for those who normally only run one or two and have that third slot open. In response, Bungie disabled the free daily Engram for everyone. Since it was only the second day since the bonus had gone live, most players had barely even participated. Some logged on for the first time on Wednesday and couldn't claim anything. To find out what was going on, they had to see the message the Destiny 2 team posted around 5:00 p.m. on social media. 'Due to an issue, we have disabled the daily bonus Nonary Engram available at the Emissary,' the team wrote. 'We are currently investigating a fix. Players may still earn up to 20 Nonary Engrams to purchase for Nonary Manifolds through July 15, 2025.' Even those who weren't familiar with the glitch knew exactly what was going on. 'Due to an issue, we have disabled...' has become such a common occurrence in the game that most players barely even flinch. 'Hah, I was mostly only logging in this week for those engrams, and now they're disabled. Perfect,' wrote one player on the subreddit. 'Yup, that killed my drive for 'Lootapalooza.'Looks like tonight I finally check out that Mecha Break game!' wrote another. The episode is minor in the scheme of things, but reinforces the idea that Bungie prioritizes being stingy with loot over letting players just have fun. This week is Destiny 2's 'lootapalooza,' after all, just not for the stuff Bungie can actually make money off of. . For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Star Wars Expansion Set For 'Destiny 2'

Bungie's live-service online shooter Destiny 2 might be eight years old now, but the game is still being supported with new content drops, with the studio revealing two new paid expansions set for this year, which mark the title's next major story arc, the Fate Saga , including one that's themed after Star Wars. First teased late last year, the two expansions will follow the game's Year of Prophecy arc, beginning on 15 July with a paid expansion named The Edge of Fate . According to its announcement post, the expansion will take players to a new location known as Kepler, which will be 'inspired by the puzzle-solving and pathfinding challenges of Destiny 2's dungeons and destination design, which encourages deep exploration, mystery, and player-driven discovery.' Apart from providing new enemies, weapons and gear to discover, The Edge of Fate will also feature destination-specific abilities surrounding its new gameplay system, dark matter energy. This mysterious power source enables the use of new abilities like Matterspark, which can allow Guardians to change forms for both traversal and combat, the Relocator Cannon, which uses Fallen dark matter tech to teleport players across the environment, or Mattermorph, which combines dark matter and Strand to allow players to manipulate their surroundings. The upcoming expansion will also mark the beginning of a new season, Reclamation , which will be accompanied by free updates for all players to shake up the game, including the Portal, described as 'a new activity selection screen that will offer instant access to a range of activities tailored to different playstyles', an Armour 3.0 rework, a new tier system for weapons and armour, and a new shooting range. More free content is set to arrive on 9 September under the title Ash & Iron , although further information on this major update has yet to be detailed. Following The Edge of Fate , the game's second major expansion this year, named Renegades , is set to be themed after the worldwide pop culture phenomenon Star Wars , with its brief trailer showcasing its iconic lightsaber and blasters. Developed in partnership with Lucasfilm, not much is known about the expansion, with Bungie describing it as 'a definitive Destiny expansion with a narrative integral to the Fate Saga ' and that it will introduce 'new Destiny characters, innovative activities, and evolved mechanics designed to surprise and delight players'. Finally, the game's content lineup for Year of Prophecy will close with the Shadow & Order major update on 3 March 2026, promising more content leading up to next year. Pre-orders for both the individual The Edge of Fate expansion and other bundles for the Year of Prophecy's content are now open for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC, with more information listed on its announcement post. Bungie Announces ‘The Edge Of Fate' Expansion, With An Unexpected Focus

The Edge of Fate Destiny 2 fans have felt like they were being somewhat ignored as the circus of the Marathon premiere took place this week. They were wondering when Bungie was going to reveal anything about this summer's Frontiers era, the launch of a new expansion and a new format for all of Destiny going forward. Well, that time was yesterday. Not too shabby. Bungie has revealed the real name of the codeword Apollo expansion, actually called The Edge of Fate. There will be a livestream reveal and look at it on Tuesday, May 6 at 9 AM PT, 12 PM ET. All we have so far is the news that this is a Nine-focused expansion. That is…extremely surprising to me. What I figured is that we're about to head to a new solar system in the commandeered Dreadnaught, but…The Nine? I mean I feel like we will still leave the system, but it's just a surprising focus for the entire expansion. Destiny 2 We still know barely anything about The Nine after all this time. There are myths and rumors about what they actually might be, with some even believing they're a meta group that look at Destiny from afar knowing it's a video game. But who knows. We what seen from The Nine so far is mainly: FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder Now, given that The Edge of Fate is Nine-themed, I'm wondering if Rite of the Nine itself is going to have some specific story component to lead into the events of the expansion. I mean, that seems like a bit too much of a coincidence for that not to be the case. The Nine have only really showed up for special events all this time, but yes, it appears we are now going to more directly interact with a group that sends us magic horses to play game shows. Destiny 2 I mean, I'm excited. I know we're heading into a smaller scale expansion, but I genuinely have no idea where this is going given what a mystery the Nine have been for most of the decade. And despite my predictions, this expansion and the launch of Frontiers is not going to be delayed, and should be here this July, by current estimations. Until then, we wait for the May showcase.
