Japan says China will resume Japanese seafood imports it halted over Fukushima water discharge

Photo: AP TOKYO: China will resume Japanese seafood imports it banned in 2023 over worries about Japan's discharge slightly radioactive wastewater from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea, a Japanese official said Friday. China said their talks this week made "substantial progress" but did not confirm an agreement with Japan on the issue that has been a significant political and diplomatic point of tension. Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said the agreement was reached after Japanese and Chinese officials met in Beijing and the imports will resume once paperwork is complete. "Seafood is an important export item for Japan and a resumption of its export to China is a major milestone," Koizumi said. Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya also welcomed the move, saying, "It will be a big first step that would help Japan and China to tackle a number of remaining issues between the two countries," such as disputes over territory, trade and wartime history. But officials said China's ban on farm and fisheries products from 10 Japanese prefectures including Fukushima is still in place and that they will keep pushing toward their lifting. TheFactualist Undo China's General Administration of Customs, in a statement issued Friday, said the two sides on Wednesday held "a new round of technical exchanges on the safety issues of Japanese aquatic products ... and achieved substantial progress" but did not mention an agreement. How the disagreement over seafood imports began China blocked imports of Japanese seafood because it said the release of the treated and diluted but still slightly radioactive wastewater would endanger the fishing industry and coastal communities in eastern China. Japanese officials have said the wastewater will be safer than international standards and its environmental impact will be negligible. They say the wastewater must be released to make room for the nuclear plant's decommissioning and to prevent accidental leaks. Tokyo and Beijing since March held three rounds of talks on the issue before reaching the agreement on Wednesday on the "technical requirements" necessary for Japanese seafood exports to China to restart, Japan's Foreign Ministry said in a statement. It did not say how long it may take before the actual resumption. Mainland China used to be the biggest overseas market for Japanese seafood, accounting for more than one-fifth of its seafood exports, followed by Hong Kong. The ban became a major blow to the fisheries industry, though the impact on overall trade was limited because seafood exports are a fraction of Japan's total exports. Japan's government set up an emergency relief fund for Japanese exporters, especially scallop growers, and has sought alternative overseas markets. Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, which operates the Fukushima Daiichi plant, has said it would compensate Japanese business owners appropriately for damages from export bans. Why the wastewater is being treated and released into the sea The nuclear plant had meltdowns in three reactors after being heavily damaged in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan. Water used to cool the reactor cores has been accumulating ever since, and officials say the massive stockpile is hampering the cleanup of the site. The wastewater was treated and heavily diluted with seawater to reduce the radioactivity as much as possible before Japan began releasing it into the sea in August 2023. Last September, then-Prime Minster Fumio Kishida said the two sides reached "a certain level of mutual understanding" that China would start working toward easing the import ban and join the International Atomic Energy Agency's expanded monitoring of wastewater discharges. People inside and outside Japan protested the initial wastewater release. Japanese fishing groups said they feared it would further damage the reputation of their seafood. Groups in China and South Korea also raised concerns.

Jhanak: Jhanak's health gets deteriorated

TV show Jhanak is gearing up for a huge turning point as it approaches a generation leap. There's lot of drama lined up before the show makes this radical 20-year jump, with lot of emotional turmoil and surprises in the offing. The jump will also see regular lead cast members Hiba Nawab and Krushal Ahuja take a bow, to pave the way for fresh faces. In the next chapter, the story will continue with fresh faces, including Arjit Taneja, Twinkle Arora, and Riya Sharma taking centre stage. Prior to this grand leap, the narrative is building up for a tragic and high-tension sequence. As already established in the latest episodes, Jhanak's situation turns critical after a villager poisons her. She is taken to the hospital, where doctors tell Parashar that her situation is very serious. During this crisis, Aniruddh's sister Mimi, who is now a government officer, comes to Parashar's village for an official visit. She has absolutely no idea that Jhanak is also in the same village. Parashar makes attempts to bring Jhanak together with Mimi, but Jhanak is alienated by the villagers and does not come forward. But fate crosses their paths. When Mimi appears before him, Jhanak is shocked and does not know how to react. This sudden meeting makes a lot of questions arise—will Mimi get to know Jhanak? Will she get to know about Jhanak's pregnancy? And most importantly, will she be able to assist? As has already been observed after knowing about Jhanak's critical condition, Mimi will break the news to Aniruddha that Jhanak is dead. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Has Honda Done It Again? The emotional burden of this moment and the suspense around Jhanak's poisoning and her pregnancy will be the core of the last episodes leading to the leap. The friction will mount with the audience in for dramatic moments, poignant realizations, and fateful choices that will lead the way to the next phase of the series. With Mimi now at the center of exposing Jhanak's status and notifying Aniruddha of her seeming demise, the show teases a rollercoaster ride of emotions until the timeskip.

Sandip Sabharwal advises staggered buying for late entrants to avoid chasing peaks

"The earnings growth deliver also has been good and in the current year the profit growth outlook could be, I would think, at least 12-13%. So, things are reasonably well placed. It is a buy on dips market and as the result season winds down, people will have the opportunity to look at what the results have been, how the outlook is and then take a view on where they should be investing," says Sandip Sabharwal , by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Has Honda Done It Again? The New Honda CR-V is Finally Here. TheFactualist Undo In the month of May, sell and go away. And for those who went away, they are now regretting. They want to come back. So, in the month of June, what should be the mantra? Sandip Sabharwal: Mantra should be that you should never have gone away. But those who have missed the bus, what should they do now? I mean, I am just getting a sense there is a very strong left out feeling. I am looking at the open interest, the total open interest at the beginning of the series is actually slightly lower than what the May series beginning numbers were, which means the market mood has changed, prices have changed but participation is not there. Sandip Sabharwal: Yes, because people have been taken by surprise ever since the rally started early April, because most of the commentary was very negative. People were expecting markets to crash. And in fact, if you look at the result delivery of the March quarter also, as per what I read today as a gross of all the companies which have reported, the earnings growth on a gross basis for all the companies who have reported till now is around 12.7% growth in profits whereas the expectation was hardly 6% to 8% for this quarter. So, the earnings growth deliver also has been good and in the current year the profit growth outlook could be, I would think, at least 12-13%. So, things are reasonably well placed. It is a buy on dips market and as the result season winds down, people will have the opportunity to look at what the results have been, how the outlook is and then take a view on where they should be investing. Live Events On a pure macroeconomic basis, India is pretty well placed. The total imports of these rare earth magnets would be just around 300-350 crores, but they could bring the entire, at least the EV part of the industry and to a great extent the traditional part also to a standstill over the next two months if this issue is not resolved. So, I think that is the key factor we will be watching out for. Ex of that I would be positively inclined on the Bajaj Auto . If the stock falls today, you will be a buyer, I mean let me put it this way? Sandip Sabharwal: Like, I said this rare earth magnet issue is an issue which we need to be cognisant of because most of the analysts are not talking of it, but then because it is a India-China issue, so if it does not get resolved on time, we could see production getting stalled right at the start of the festival season, so that is the near-term risk. So, the stocks will give time for people to accumulate, so you do not need to jump in and buy the entire quantity today. So, let us say hypothetically if it falls 3-4% today, a small amount of buying is possible and then accumulate it over the next few weeks. On the other hand, Ola, what do you say about those numbers? Sandip Sabharwal: The least said the better. Yes, I mean quite a shocker when it comes to both the stock price journey, there has been no financial improvement, they are only deteriorating when it comes to their operational performance despite the volume uptake which comes in, I guess, because of the steep discount. There has been losses which have been the spot of bother for just about everyone and they are again setting ambitious targets for themselves. Sandip Sabharwal: I think you can make lot of statements to excite the analysts which include backward integration, comparing yourself to companies like Tesla, etc. But then, the fact of the matter what we need to realise is once a brand loses reputation in the face of the consumers, then irrespective of what you are doing internally to do backward integration, to get into cell manufacturing, to improve your profitability, getting market share and volumes back especially when the other players are also aggressively working towards new product development and taking market share will become very-very tough and that is a reality which investors into this stock need to realise. So, it is always possible that with aggressive management guidance we could see small time bounce backs in the stock, but what will change the consumer perception to create a uptick in the volumes is the question mark and that is something which we need to see. Let us discuss this curious case once again. We were chatting about this last afternoon and we continue talking about it as to how there could be more and more skeletons in the cupboard. Sandip Sabharwal: So, historically, we have seen in financials once new managements come in, the board of directors or the audit committee, etc, takes a fresh look or the RBI conducts a fresh review. Typically, it does not end at the first level of disclosures. So, that is the risk I see in IndusInd Bank . Especially in financials I always advise that people should not be bold here. So, I would remain cautious and the outlook for many other larger banks is much more clearer and if people need to be aggressive, then there are other sectors where they can be aggressive not financial.

In line with its commitment to clean the Yamuna river, the BJP-led Delhi government will install 32 real-time water quality monitoring stations to monitor the river water and the drains flowing into it. A senior official said ten stations will be set up on the Yamuna River and 22 on major drains. Some of the Yamuna river sites where Monitoring Stations will be set up include Palla, ISBT Bridge, ITO Bridge, Nizamuddin Bridge, Okhla Barrage, etc. The major drains that will be included are Najafgarh, Metcalfe House, Khyber Pass, Sweeper Colony, along with some border drains that include Singhu Border (DD6, Sonepat), Bahadurgarh, Shahdara, Sahibabad and Banthia. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Has Honda Done It Again? The New Honda CR-V is Finally Here. TheFactualist Undo These Monitoring Stations will monitor the river along with drains flowing into it and record the date of the cleaning procedure. All the monitoring stations are expected to be operational by the end of this year. The tender process has already been initiated. These stations will monitor water quality in real time and transmit the data directly to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) server. Live Events These stations will monitor key pollutants, for instance, BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand), COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), TSS (Total Suspended Solids), along with Levels of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Ammonia. The Yamuna cleaning project is already underway, where the treatment of sewage has begun. Delhi LG VK Saxena , Chief Minister Rekha Gupta , and Minister Parvesh Verma are monitoring the procedure. The trio has regularly inspected major drains that also fall into the river. Yamuna cleaning has been a significant issue in the state, where the previous government promised to clean it but failed to do so. The BJP government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has also promised and plans to clean it within its first tenure. In the Delhi budget 2025- 26, Delhi CM Gupta allocated 500 crore specifically for Yamuna cleaning, where funding will be designated for the construction of 40 decentralised sewage treatment plants (STPs). The aim is to treat the water before it enters the river, thereby addressing pollution at its source. A 1500 cr budget has also been allocated to rejuvenate Yamuna and improve the state's sewage infrastructure.
