Ollie Madden, director of Film4 and Channel 4 drama, will be leaving the U.K. broadcaster in October to become director of U.K. film at Netflix. Madden will be joining the Anne Mensah-led U.K. content team as of early October. He will also develop a select portfolio of filmmaker-led series. Madden has worked as both an executive and producer across film and high-end drama. Farhana Bhula, Film4's head of creative and deputy director, will take over as interim director of Film4, effective from July 1. Channel 4 said in a staff memo obtained by THR: 'We are writing to let you know that after a remarkable eight years at the channel Ollie Madden, Director of Film4 and Channel 4 Drama, will be leaving us in October. Under Ollie's leadershi,p Film4 has backed a string of critical and commercial hits from many of the most exciting directors working today. He has overseen scores of award-winning films, including 9 Oscar wins for The Favourite, The Father, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest, and 24 BAFTA wins for Beast, The Favourite, The Father, Rocks, Poor Things, The Zone of Interest, and Earth Mama.' It added: 'Ollie's commitment, passion and reputation for nurturing talent has seen Film4 not only work with some of the best-known writers and directors in the UK and Ireland but also cement our industry reputation as a huge champion of new talent, backing over 27 debut films and five series by debut writers throughout his Film4 tenure, including Molly Manning-Walker's How to Have Sex and Rose Glass' Saint Maud.' Domestic rights are being repped by UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance. Penned by 'Adolescence' writer Jack Thorne, 'Séance on a Wet Afternoon' is based on Mark McShane's bestselling 1961 suspense novel of the same name. Weisz will star as Myra, a self-proclaimed medium who convinces her husband Billy to kidnap the son of a wealthy family so she can lead the police to the 'missing' child and legitimize her psychic abilities. When Myra's true intentions come to light, however, Billy realizes her plan threatens to consume them both. More from Variety The novel was previously adapted into a critically acclaimed 1964 film starring Richard Attenborough and Kim Stanley, who earned a best actress Oscar nomination for her performance. Alfredson, who is best known for directing the BAFTA-winning 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' and the cult Swedish genre film 'Let the Right One In,' said in a statement: 'I'm drawn to complex characters, and Jack Thorne's edge-of-your-seat script blends psychologically deep characters with unnerving twists and turns. With Rachel Weisz at the core of this project, both producing and starring as Myra, the film is sure to be powerful and unnerving. It is a haunting exploration of desperation and the fragile line between reality and delusion.' 'Séance on a Wet Afternoon' will be produced by Robyn Slovo; Astral Projection's Polly Stokes and Rachel Weisz; and Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe for Element Pictures (a Fremantle company), whose credits include Yorgos Lanthimos' 'Poor Things.' The project is a part of the first-look and development deal that Astral Projection, the banner set up by Weisz and Stokes ('American Honey,' 'Wild Rose'), signed with Fremantle last year. Alfredson is repped by UTA. Weisz is repped by Independent, CAA, Linden Entertainment, ID PR and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof and Fishman. Thorne is repped by UTA and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern. Weisz is also currently preparing to exec produce and play the lead role in Netflix's limited series 'Vladimir,' based on the novel by Julia May Jonas, about a woman who becomes obsessed with her captivating new colleague. Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone's "Bugonia" Gets New Release Date
Yara Sameh Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and Oscar winner Emma Stone's project 'Bugonia" will premiere ahead of schedule. The film will open in select theaters on October 24 before expanding nationwide on October 31. That's slightly earlier than the original release date of November 7. Focus Features is rolling out 'Bugonia' in the U.S. and Canada while Universal Pictures, the specialty studio's parent company, will handle international distribution. 'Bugonia,' a remake of the South Korean sci-fi comedy 'Save the Green Planet,' revolves around two conspiracy-obsessed friends who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major corporation because they are convinced she's an alien intent on destroying Earth. Jesse Plemons, who worked with Stone and Lanthimos on 'Kinds of Kindness,' also leads the cast alongside Alicia Silverstone, Aidan Delbis, and Stavros Halkias. Lanthimos is directing from a script by Will Tracy, whose credits include 'The Menu' and 'Succession.' Stone and Lanthimos were producers — via their respective companies Fruit Tree and Pith — in their latest team-up following 'Poor Things,' 'The Favourite' and 'Kinds of Kindness.' Producers also include Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures, Ari Aster and Lars Knusden of Square Peg, and Miky Lee and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko of CJ ENM. Focus Features won a bidding war for 'Bugonia,' a departure for Lanthimos after Searchlight distributed his prior three films, 2018's 'The Favourite,' 2023's 'Poor Things' and 2024's 'Kinds of Kindness.'
