Hannah Thomas, daughter of former Malaysian AG Tommy Thomas, aims to unseat Australian PM Albanese in May 3 vote
KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 — In a real-life political drama, Hannah Thomas – daughter of Malaysia's former attorney-general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas – is going head-to-head against Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the country's election on May 3. The 30-something firebrand is running under the Greens banner in Grayndler, the very seat Albanese has controlled since 1996 – and she's not pulling any punches. 'It's an insane thing to be doing, but it's also extremely exciting,' Hannah said in an interview with The Feed SBS. Originally from Malaysia, Hannah migrated to Australia as an international student back in 2009. Today, she's the youngest candidate in Grayndler – and she's gunning for the top. And get this – Australia's quirky voting system could actually help her. Thanks to preferential voting, if no one gets over 50 per cent, votes from losing candidates get reallocated based on voters' rankings. The Labor Party has even put Hannah as its second choice on their how-to-vote cards – a move that's causing an uproar, especially given her fierce pro-Gaza activism. In contrast, the Australian Greens lists Albanese as only their third choice. 'He failed to take action' So what made Hannah throw herself into the political battlefield? She says she was driven by Albanese's failure to stand up against the horrors happening in Gaza. 'Watching a live-streamed genocide in the electorate of the prime minister was too much to bear. There are very few people on this planet who possess the power to restrain the Israeli war machine as it slaughters countless Palestinians, but our local member was one of them. Instead, he failed to take action and should be held to account,' she said on the Greens' website. But that's not all, Hannah also blasted Albanese for blaming Australia's housing crisis and cost-of-living woes on migrants – something she called out as divisive and cruel. With Australia heading to the polls in just days, Hannah has already made history by daring to challenge the country's most powerful man. Now, the world waits to see if she can pull off the political shocker of the year.

Grayndler is an electoral division in the Australian House of Representatives, located in the Inner West region of Sydney, New South Wales. Ms Thomas, who is a lawyer, activist and advocate for progressive change, believes in fighting against genocide in Palestine, solving the housing and cost of living crisis and supporting the rights of refugees in the country. 'I'm lucky to have grown up in Malaysia in a family with a long history of strong progressive values, where political engagement and activism were always encouraged. So it was probably inevitable that I'd eventually join The Greens once Australia became home,' she said in The Greens website. Ms Thomas said she is inspired by the activism of young people, the potential for minority government, and the global solidarity among workers and marginalised communities. She said the resilience of the Palestinian people and First Nations communities in Australia further fuels her optimism for a just future. Ms Thomas is also the youngest candidate running against the Prime Minister. 'As someone who is currently renting, who wants to buy a first home, considering whether or not to have children, I guess I relate more to young people here,' she said in a recent interview with Australian TV programme The Feed SBS, which was shared on its Facebook page. This election marks a historic moment where the Greens emerge as a formidable opposition in the Prime Minister's own seat, striving to deliver a powerful message of change to the Albanese Government. 'For the first time, an Australian Prime Minister's biggest threat is in his own seat against the Greens. 'It's an incredible opportunity to send the loudest possible message to the Albanese Government that we deserve better, that we deserve a government that tackles the problems that everyday people face,' she said. The Australian federal election is scheduled for May 3 to elect members of the 48th Parliament. Voters will decide all 150 seats in the House of Representatives and 40 out of 76 seats in the Senate. The Labor government, headed by Mr Albanese, is vying for a second term, facing off against the Liberal/National Coalition led by opposition leader Peter Dutton. Several minor parties and independents, including the Greens party, are also participating in the election. Abbie Chatfield claps back at conservative political commentator Freya Leach's brutal TikTok dig: 'Mean little girl'
Abbie Chatfield has labelled conservative political commentator Freya Leach a 'mean little girl'. The It's A Lot podcast host, 29, and the Menzies Research Centre 'policy maker', 21, both took part in filming an influencer election debate for The Feed SBS last week. The news and current affairs program invited six of 'Australia's most influential young political commentators to debate the big issues of this election,' in an episode that has not yet been uploaded to YouTube. Rounding out the panel was former high school teacher Konrad Benjamin, 35, (aka Punters Politics); Cheek Media founder Hannah Fergusson, 26; Centre for Independent Studies policy analyst Trisha Jha, 38, and journalist Joel Jamaal, 28. Freya, who has 14,800 TikTok followers, did not mince her words when she filmed her Uber ride home from the debate. She specifically called out all three 'super white lefties' on the panel, saving her harshest dig for Abbie, who has 635,800 followers on the platform. 'Honest reflections,' she captioned the short clip of herself in a blue suit. 'Punters is a one trick pony. Hannah is not as smart as I thought. And Abbie had no idea what she was talking about.' Freya's video has 3794 likes at the time of writing. Abbie filmed a short and sharp clapback on Saturday that's been liked 17,500 times. 'Freya, you compared the climate crisis to the time there was too much horse poo in London,' she said, before adding: 'Let's be real here darling. 'Also babe, we were so polite to you despite your abhorrent views,' she continued. 'We were so respectful. This is insecure, mean girl, embarrassing behaviour from you. Hopefully you can grow up and mature from it. 'Because Hannah and I didn't agree with almost everything you said, but we didn't get in our Ubers and make a little snarky mean video did we? No. Because we're adults.' 'But also because we couldn't get engagement from your name, but you can get it from our names,' she said. 'So I'm glad you got your views babe, sending you all the love and light you deserve. We were so polite to you, holy s***, mean little girl.' In 2023, Freya ran unsuccessfully as a Liberal candidate in the Sydney inner-west Greens electorate of Balmain. She married NSW Young Liberals secretary Cooper Gannon in a Sydney church in December and has frequently called Anthony Albanese the 'worst PM of all time' in videos posted to social media. She is currently the director of youth policy with the Liberal Party associated Menzies think-tank.
