Summer meal programs under strain amid increased need, funding cuts

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — It's summertime for students across the Miami Valley, but for some families, this means having less access to consistent, daily meals. Local free summer meal programs say they are doing their best to provide, but this year programs are facing higher demand and less supply, with more families in need and fewer resources due to federal budget cuts. 'We are at capacity this year. This is probably the first time we've been at capacity this early in the summer,' said Kim Jarvis, On Purpose Academy Mentoring Center executive director. Dayton Foodbank debuts new food van for expanded deliveries Jarvis says their free student meal program filled up just days into the summer season. In the six years since the program was created, this is the fastest it's ever happened — something Jarvis says is a sign of increased food insecurity locally. 'That lets us know that families are in need, families are looking for resources,' said Jarvis. According to the Dayton Foodbank, there are more families relying on free meals for students — a program that is generally provided through agencies that work with food distribution centers. But this year, that funding has been greatly reduced after the Summer Feeding Program was cut, resulting in the discontinuation of hundreds of health meals that went directly to local schools. Partners of The Foodbank, like the Dayton Christian Center, say they are increasingly relying on other sources for donations beyond The Foodbank to maintain their current summer meal program. RTA unveils new bus honoring veterans Program leaders agree it's a priority to provide meals for kids during this crucial time. 'We do our best to make sure that we support our children no matter what, especially in the summertime, because we know a lot of the children who are in school may not have the same resources that they do through the school season,' said Yvonne Watkins, Dayton Christian Center executive director. Families in need of summer food assistance are encouraged to reach out to their local school district for direct resources in the area. The Foodbank also says it is still open for any families who need help finding a free food pantry near them. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ‘Stamp Out Hunger' food drive Saturday to benefit Foodbank

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Miami Valley postal workers will be carrying more than letters on their routes Saturday. The National Association of Letter Carriers is hosting its 32nd annual 'Stamp Out Hunger' food driver. To take part, all you have to do is leave non-perishable food donations in a bag next to your mailbox. All donations collected in the Greater Dayton area will benefit The Foodbank. 'Before 1970, letter carriers — many of them — could not sustain their living on just their letter carrier salaries,' said Mark Beach, vice president of the NALC Buckeye Branch. 'Many of them had to rely on food banks and things like that. So it's something that's dear to letter carriers' hearts.' Organizers recommend setting bags outside as early as possible this morning to ensure they get picked up. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Young's Jersey Dairy switching to plastic eggs for Easter hunt

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A local farm is breaking more than 40 years of tradition due to the community demand for eggs. Young's Jersey Dairy annually hid over 10,000 real, hand-dyed eggs on the farm for its Easter Sunday Egg Hunt. This year, it is taking a temporary detour. For the first time ever, the farm will use plastic eggs instead. Each egg will have a ticket for a free ride on Cowtherine's Carousel, redeemable on any visit. Lawmakers look for ways to drop the price of eggs When asked about the choice to change, John Young, the farm's CIEIO, joked about having the farm's mascot stand guard. 'We thought about having Barnabe guard our 10,000 real eggs 24 hours a day, but this seemed like a better approach,' said Young. 'While we know our classic hard-boiled eggs are our tradition, we feel this is the best choice this year.' This year's hunt will be on Sunday, April 20. It will have three sections: 2 p.m. for kids ages 4 and under. 2:20 p.m. for kids ages 5 to 7. 2:40 p.m. for kids ages 8 to 10. Instead of buying the 10,000 eggs to hard boil, the farm will give money to charity: $1,500 to The Foodbank in Dayton and $1,500 to Second Harvest Food Bank in Springfield. Scouts lead community project for local foodbank Attendees can meet partners from the food banks to learn about supporting others in the community year-round. Barnabe will be available for photos. The farm expects to bring back the hard-boiled eggs for the 2026 hunt. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
