Sean Bean's historical mystery series Shardlake finally gets ITV release date
Shardlake premiered on Disney Plus last year and now ITV viewers will be able to tune into the series A much-loved historical drama, featuring actor Sean Bean, is set to grace ITV screens next month. Originally premiered on Disney Plus last year, Shardlake is now scheduled to be part of ITV's summer line-up. The first episode will air on Monday, 9 June, with subsequent episodes released weekly. This four-part television series is an adaptation of the Shardlake novels penned by C. J. Sansom. The show was adapted for the screen by Stephen Butchard, directed by Justin Chadwick and produced by The Forge. Set against the backdrop of Henry VIII's reign in the 16th century, Shardlake stars Sean Bean as Thomas Cromwell and Arthur Hughes as Matthew Shardlake, reports the Manchester Evening News. Joining them are fellow actors Toby Eden, Anthony Boyle, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, Joe Barber, Miles Barrow and Babou Ceesay. The cast also includes Peter Firth, Paul Kaye, Mike Noble, Matthew Steer, Brian Vernel, Ken Nwosu, Kimberley Nixon, Alex Lowe, Charlotte Christof, Alex Bhat, David Pearse and Michael Rivers. Shardlake is touted as a mystery-laden, eerie whodunnit adventure, brimming with suspense and deception. The narrative centres around Matthew Shardlake, a lawyer tasked with investigating the death of a commissioner. The official synopsis for Shardlake reads: "Shardlake's sheltered life as a lawyer is turned upside down when a Cromwell instructs him to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners at a monastery in the remote town of Scarnsea. "The commissioner was gathering evidence to close the monastery and it is not imperative for Cromwell's own political survival that Shardlake both solves the murder and closed the monastery." It continues: "He leaves Shardlake in no doubt that failure is not an option. Cromwell insists that is accompanied Jack Barak to Scarnsea, where the duo are met with hostility, suspicion, and paranoia by the monks who fear for their future and will seemingly stop at nothing to preserve their order." Despite winning a favourable response from its audience, it has emerged that Disney Plus has decided against renewing the series. According to a piece published by Variety in January, there appears to be no prospect of adapting further C. J. Sansom novels for the series, despite ample material and positive critical reception, with the streaming service opting not to continue with subsequent seasons.
