'Golden Bachelor' Gerry Turner offers cancer update, reveals he's dating someone new

'Golden Bachelor' Gerry Turner offers cancer update, reveals he's dating someone new Show Caption Hide Caption Jesse Palmer gives a Gerry and Theresa 'Golden Bachelor' update Jesse Palmer talks with USA TODAY's Ralphie Aversa on the Oscars red carpet about why "The Golden Wedding" was so stressful for him. "Golden Bachelor" Gerry Turner is offering fans an update on his ongoing battle with cancer. In a Tuesday appearance on the "Bachelor Happy Hour" podcast, Turner said he felt "great" as he awaits treatment for bone marrow cancer − a diagnosis he revealed in December. "Until I have any symptoms, there's no treatment. So I go frequently for blood tests. I'm on, like, a six-month schedule now," Turner, 73, said. "I feel optimistic because the doctor has said, 'Well, when you turn 75, we're going to have to go three-month increments.' So it's telling me that at least he expects me to live another couple of years to get to that. But the bottom line is I feel really good." Turner, the inaugural star of ABC's dating show for contestants in their golden years, first told fans he had been diagnosed with cancer last year, telling People magazine that "it was like 10 tons of concrete were just dropped on me." 'Golden Bachelor' Gerry Turner says cancer diagnosis factored into Theresa Nist divorce Gerry Turner feeling optimistic amid incurable Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia Turner's specific diagnosis, Waldenström's macroglobulinemia, is a bone marrow cancer without a known cure. Considered a type of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the condition converts some white blood cells into cancerous ones, according to the Mayo Clinic. Even without a cure, Turner says his grasp on life is stronger than ever. "I mean this sincerely, from the time I got this diagnosis, it's a privilege to live like you're dying," he told "Bachelor Happy Hour" hosts. "I don't turn down anything. I feel like I'm more open to emotions. I'm more open to experiences." We've got Hollywood covered: Sign up for USA TODAY's Entertainment newsletter. 'Golden Bachelor' Gerry Turner, Theresa Nist divorce news shocks, but don't let it get to you Gerry Turner dating again after Theresa Nist split "The person I'm dating will say, 'Do you want to go do-' And before she even gets out the rest of the sentence, I will say yes. So I'm in on everything," he added. "And it makes life exciting because you kind of in the back of your head feel like you've got a lot of living to do and you don't know how long you have to do it, so don't turn down anything. And so, in a way, it's really a good thing." Turner, who got engaged to his "Bachelor" season finalist Theresa Nist, then married in a televised ceremony and divorced in the space of months, said when revealing his diagnosis that the disease had factored into their decision to split. 'Golden Bachelor' breakup bombshell: Look back at Gerry Turner, Theresa Nist's romance "I wanted my life to continue on as normal as possible, and that led me to believing that as normal as possible more meant spending time with my family, my two daughters, my two son-in-laws, my granddaughters," he told People. "And the importance of finding the way with Theresa was still there, but it became less of a priority." At the time of its announcement, fans of the franchise voiced dismay over Nist and Turner's decision to divorce noting that it followed in a long line of "Bachelor Nation" couples who couldn't make it work. Age, it seemed, was no protection against the show's faulty formula for lasting romance. But Turner told People he hopes this revelation will prompt fans to reconsider. "Hopefully they'll look at things a little bit differently," he told the magazine, "that maybe it wasn't quite a rash, fast decision that people thought. That there was something else going on." Nist told a different story in an interview with People, saying she didn't believe Turner's diagnosis was "a factor in the ending of the relationship, at least not for me." Despite their conflicting reports, Nist said she wished her ex-husband the best. "I wish for him a long and healthy, prosperous life, and I hope that he finds his person. I want him to be so happy, and I just wish him all the best of everything in the world," she said.

Former "Bachelor" star Sean Lowe is opening up about a harrowing dog attack that left him "fighting" for his life. Lowe, who headed up Season 17 of the reality dating competition, took to Instagram Monday to share that his dog Moose had attacked him twice in a 24-hour period last week, resulting in a trip to the emergency room and lifelong injuries. "Our family has been through something pretty traumatic over the weekend," he told followers, sitting alongside wife Catherine Giudici Lowe, the winning contestant from his season. While hosting a small barbecue at his home, smoke drifted into the house and set off the smoke alarm, causing his rescue boxer Moose to get agitated, Lowe explained. "He shows his teeth at me and just attacks me," Lowe said. "I don't mean bite and then run off — like a lot of dogs do when they're scared or defensive — I mean attacks me. I feel him ripping into the flesh of my arm, and at this point I'm doing everything I possibly can just to fend this dog off. … I know I'm bleeding badly. "I'm not trying to be dramatic, but I honestly just felt like I am fighting for my life here against my dog," he said. After fighting to get free with the help of his guests, Lowe was rushed to the hospital where he was stitched up, only to return to a similar trauma hours later. After the door keeping Moose held away was blown open by the wind, the dog returned for a second attack. "Going through a dog attack is pretty darn traumatic," he recalled in the video. "Having to re-live it less than 12 hours later, seeing that dog running straight at you, is a feeling I don't think I ever want to experience again." As Lowe once again attempted to wrestle the dog away, he says the creature "ripped" his "arm open" and he began worrying it would kill him. Eventually, after regaining control and waiting for an ambulance and the cops to arrive, Lowe returned to the hospital for stitches once more. The incident shocked him, he said, as the dog, whom the family adopted in January, had not shown signs of aggression before. Lowe also voiced gratitude that it had been him and not the rest of his family − he and Guidice share three children − that had suffered the attack. "It took everything I had to control this dog, and I'm 220 pounds," he continued. "If it were anyone else, he would've killed my children or my wife." Though they rarely result in fatalities, dog bites remain a widespread medical concern in the United States. The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates that 4.7 million people are bitten each year, though less than a million seek medical care. "It wasn't Moose's fault," Lowe said toward the end of the video. "I think it's clear he experienced a lot of trauma before we got him and had something neurologically wrong where just a switch flipped and he turned into an absolute killer, which was so weird." The reality star added that the family was working with a no-kill shelter to find a non-harmful new home for Moose, who he said was too dangerous for their family, but ultimately shouldn't be punished. "We're torn up about it," Lowe concluded. "And we miss our dog, as crazy as it sounds."

Gabby Windey reveals secret wedding to partner Robby Hoffman

Gabby Windey reveals secret wedding to partner Robby Hoffman Show Caption Hide Caption Jesse Palmer gives a Gerry and Theresa 'Golden Bachelor' update Jesse Palmer talks with USA TODAY's Ralphie Aversa on the Oscars red carpet about why "The Golden Wedding" was so stressful for him. It's a Bachelor Nation love story − well, kind of. Gabby Windey, a one-time lead of the reality dating show, tied the knot with partner Robby Hoffman earlier this year. Windey announced the Jan. 11 wedding, which she and Hoffman had kept under wraps, in an Instagram post Wednesday. "Husband and wife!!" she captioned a shot of her and Hoffman sharing a kiss in front of a white rose-adorned altar. 'Bachelor' and 'Bachelorette' couples: Which are success stories — and who's broken up? Windey, 34, co-starred alongside Rachel Recchia on Season 19 of "The Bachelorette," ultimately picking contestant Erich Schwer and sharing a brief engagement. The two split in December 2022, just two months after the show's finale, but Windey's star has only continued to rise. Beloved to fans for her comedic timing, she took her signature humor from "Dancing With the Stars," to the podcast circuit and now to "The Traitors" − an entirely different type of reality competition show. Windey began dating Hoffman, 35, a successful standup comedian, in 2023 and the two have been inseparable ever since. Then, when the pair evacuated their Los Angeles home amid raging wildfires at the start of the year, and wound up in Vegas − marriage seemed like the natural next step. Windey was the first to broach the idea, the ex-"Bachelorette," told Cosmopolitan in an interview published Wednesday. "It was nice, it being my idea," she told the outlet. "Robby was literally ready to propose three weeks in and I'm always the one pumping the brakes, but when something feels right, it just feels right. I think it was better for the both of us that it was my idea." The couple was cautious not to make light of tragedy, but with the fires threatening their home, tying the knot felt like a way to stay together even if the world was ending. 'The Bachelor's' surprising revelation about the science of finding a soulmate "It's giving Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey when they divorced and came back together after 9/11," Windey joked. The two were engaged for a day, they tell the outlet, with Hoffman proposing over a custom-made crossword puzzle and the soon-to-be newlyweds sharing a meal at an all-you-can-eat crab buffet. Windey walked down the aisle in a dress she bought that day to Chappell Roan's "Hot to Go." "It was the best," Windey told Cosmo. "In a weird way, it was giving 'Bachelor' because there were roses everywhere. I never envisioned my wedding as a kid or anything, but that's part of what made this feel so right. Actually being there and feeling it, it was so us." "We had no expectations. We just had love and openness," Hoffman said. Recchia, who also ultimately ditched her "final rose" recipient Tino Franco, sent love Windey's way, commenting on the post: "Congratulations to you both I'm in tears."
