Retired Blue Bell ice cream flavor returns after nationwide vote. What to know
A beloved Blue Bell ice cream flavor is back in the freezer aisle, thanks to fans.
Groom's Cake is returning to stores after winning The Great Scoop Revival Flavor Tournament, marking the end of its retirement, Blue Bell said in a May 1 news release.
The frozen treat, featuring milk chocolate ice cream blended with chocolate cake pieces, chocolate-coated strawberry hearts and swirls of strawberry sauce and chocolate icing, bested Cookie Cake Ice Cream to win the competition, according to the Texas-based creamery.
Ice cream lovers can buy Groom's Cake by the pint or half gallon for a limited time, though Blue Bell didn't say for how long.
Pricing information wasn't immediately available.
For the tournament, Blue Bell invited fans to vote for the chance to revive a retired flavor, according to the release. What began as 16 'carefully chosen' creations was soon whittled down to two: Groom's Cake and runner-up Cookie Cake.
'We are excited to have Groom's Cake back in stores this year,' Kelli Remmert, marketing communications manager for Blue Bell, said in the release. 'It is always difficult to say goodbye to an ice cream flavor that you love.'
The flavor debuted in 2009 but was discontinued in stores nine years later, the company said.
Due to an 'overwhelming response,' Cookie Cake will also return to shelves later in May, according to Blue Bell.
The dessert is made with sweet cream ice cream, combined with chocolate chip cookie cake pieces and swirls of chocolate and vanilla icing.
Blue Bell said it plans to hold another flavor tournament soon.
