Portland shelter Oak Street Village set to open on 82nd Avenue

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A new shelter village in the Montavilla neighborhood is set to serve 40 people experiencing homelessness as early as this week. Metro and The Homeless Services Department announced Wednesday morning that they are celebrating the planned opening of the new shelter next month, called Oak Street Village, which features 29 shelter pods and can serve up to 40 people. Located at 333 SE 82nd Avenue, Metro says the site will also include parking for those who are currently living in cars as well as on-site facilities to help people transition into permanent housing. 'Really alarming': PSU students 'frustrated' after Trump's DEI warning 'The Supportive Housing Services measure is making a real difference across our region, helping thousands of people avoid and escape the trauma of homelessness,' Metro Councilor Duncan Hwang said. 'Shelters like Oak Street Village are an integral part of the system we're building, often serving as a stepping stone from the street to long-term housing stability.' According to Metro, the shelter will be staffed 24/7, only available through reservations and guests can stay as long as they need to while working to take steps towards permanent housing. 'This shelter will be more than just a place to sleep. It will be a holistic community where people can become self-sufficient,' said Pastor Dwight Minnieweather of Straightway Services. 'It means the world to us to operate this shelter. We can't wait to welcome the guests and begin supporting them on their path to stability.' Operating costs for the shelter are funded by the Metro Supportive Housing Services measure. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
