'The Brady Bunch' star Susan Olsen, who played Cindy Brady, the youngest child of the Brady brood, says an on-set accident that occurred while she was filming the family sitcom's first episode nearly proved fatal. Olsen, 63, made the revelation while chatting with her costars Mike Lookinland, Christopher Knight, and Barry Williams during an April 22 While discussing the pilot episode, 'The Honeymoon,' Olsen recalled being struck on the head by falling set equipment. 'I got injured,' she said, adding that she 'almost died.' Olsen, who was 7 years old at the time, said she was getting makeup applied to her legs when the accident occurred. 'I was standing on a makeup chair, and something from the catwalk where they keep all the lights and everything fell. It hit the makeup man first, glanced off the body makeup woman, and hit me in the face,' she recounted. Created by screenwriter Sherwood Schwartz, 'The Brady Bunch' was set in the Los Angeles suburbs and chronicled the lives of married couple Mike and Carol Brady and their blended family of six children. The pilot episode premiered on Sept. 26, 1969, leading to the show's five-season run. The ABC sitcom concluded in 1974, with its final episode, 'The Hair-Brained Scheme,' airing on March 8 of that year. ‘Brady Bunch' Star Reveals She 'Almost Died' Filming Pilot Episode in 1968

A star from The Brady Bunch revealed she was seriously injured while filming the pilot episode of the ABC sitcom more than 55 years ago. During an appearance on The Real Brady Bros podcast, former child star Susan Olsen recalled a dangerous incident that occurred while she was shooting a scene for the episode 'The Honeymoon' in 1968 when she was 7 years old. While speaking with her co-stars Christopher Knight and Barry Williams, Olsen, who played youngest child Cindy Brady in the classic series, said the scary moment took place as she was getting body makeup applied to her legs. 'I got injured,' Olsen said. 'I almost died.' "I was standing on a makeup chair and something from the catwalk, where they keep all the lights and everything, fell," Olsen explained. "It hit the makeup man first, [bounced] off the body makeup woman, and hit me in the face." Olsen said her injuries are visible in the scene where her TV parents (Florence Henderson, Robert Reed) get married. "You can tell, if you look at the ceremony and you see the three girls on one side, if you were to zoom in really tight, you can see my face is quite swollen," Olsen said. "I look different. You can even see it in some of the early publicity shots.' Olsen also recalled that Henderson told producers, 'That hit that little girl really hard.' But everyone on set said Olsen was 'fine,' so she held back tears before being taken off set for medical treatment. "The saddest news is that we didn't sue Paramount, because I would have made more off of that than the show," she cracked on the podcast. Olsen said she reported to work the next day with a swollen nose and two black eyes. Makeup guru Hal King (I Love Lucy) was brought in as a "specialist" to cover her injuries with makeup. Olsen wasn't the only Brady to suffer an injury during filming. In 1972, Williams, who played eldest sibling Greg on the sitcom, wiped out while shooting a surfing scene for the infamous Hawaii episodes. In his book Growing Up Brady: I Was a Teenage Greg, Williams revealed that he lost control of his surfboard and 'flew through the air' toward an exposed coral head. After he wiped out, his feet "got turned into hamburger meat,' Williams wrote. The real-life accident footage was shown on The Brady Bunch episode 'Hawaii Here We Come.'

'Brady Bunch' star Susan Olsen 'almost died' during filming of first episode

Susan Olsen revealed she "almost died" while filming the first episode of "The Brady Bunch" as Cindy Brady. Olsen was joined by three of her co-stars — Mike Lookinland, Christopher Knight and Barry Williams — for a re-watch of "The Honeymoon." They discussed the first day of filming the iconic pilot episode that aired in 1969. "On the Culver lot, they were shooting something — I would assume, in the girl's bedroom — and I was getting body makeup on my legs," Olsen said during a podcast episode of "The Real Brady Bros." "I was standing on a makeup chair and something from the catwalk, where they keep all the lights and everything, fell." "It hit the makeup man first, [bounced] off the body makeup woman, and hit me in the face." "You can tell, if you look at the [wedding] ceremony, and you see the three girls on one side, if you were to zoom in really tight, you can see my face is quite swollen," Olsen explained. "I look different. You can even see it in some of the early publicity shots. You can tell my face is a little swollen." Florence Henderson, who starred as Carol Brady, was there to comfort Olsen and make sure everyone knew that the young actress had been injured. However, everyone else around insisted she was fine. Olsen recalled thinking at the time, "I don't want to be brave. In fact, I don't just wanna cry, I want to sob. I'm just gonna let go and forget all my pride and just sob because this hurts." She ended up putting on a brave face and held back her tears. Olsen's mom took her to the doctor, but the family chose not to take legal action. "The saddest news is that we didn't sue Paramount, because I would have made more off of that than the show," Olsen joked. "But I came to work the next day. Florence was the first one to see me. She's like, 'You make sure everybody sees her.' And my mom was like, 'Oh, yes, I will.' Because everybody was trying to say, 'It didn't really hit her. She's fine.'" "My eyes were black. I mean, I had two black eyes. My nose was swollen. My face was swollen," she said. "I remember loving it, because I looked like I was in a horror film. And then everybody knew, yes, I had gotten hurt, and I had gotten hurt very badly." Paramount brought out Hal King, the makeup artist who did Lucille Ball's makeup, to cover up her bruises. King also worked with Henderson for the entirety of filming for "The Brady Bunch." The cover-up of Olsen's injury must have worked great because her male co-stars didn't even notice. "Didn't know anything about that," Knight said during the podcast. "The Brady Bunch" aired from 1969 to 1974. The show starred Henderson and Robert Reed as the mom and dad, Carol and Mike Brady, who shared a blended family of three boys and three girls from previous marriages. The sitcom followed the family's life, showcasing adventures and more.

Why ‘The Brady Bunch' never explained what happened to Carol's first husband

Here's the story. The 'Brady Bunch' cast has revealed why the classic sitcom never explained what happened to Carol Brady's first husband — despite being more forthcoming about Mike Brady's first wife. Christopher Knight, who played middle son Peter Brady on the beloved series, and Barry Williams, who played oldest son Greg Brady, opened up about the mystery on Tuesday's episode of their 'The Real Brady Bros' podcast. The show's creator, Sherwood Schwartz, insisted that Mrs. Brady be a divorcee even though the network wanted her to be a widow. 8 The cast of 'The Brady Bunch' in 1969 Disney General Entertainment Content via Getty Images 8 The cast of 'The Brady Bunch' during the sitcom's first episode. Getty Images Advertisement 'There was a whole discrepancy in the basis of the show, in the concept of the show that the network fought Sherwood Schwartz on, and that is the premise was a widower with three sons and a divorcee with three daughters,' Williams, 70, explained. 'And the network felt that a divorcee created too many problems for the series.' Some of those 'problems' included why Mrs. Brady and her first husband divorced and what their custody arrangement looked like. 'We're playing to a very conservative country,' he said. 'So they wanted Carol to be a widow.' 8 The cast of 'The Brady Bunch' during the show's first season. Her ex-husband was never even mentioned in the show's first episode. 'Sherwood never changed it,' Knight said, 'but they agreed to disagree, and it was left unhandled, which is why you never see in our pilot episode Carol's ex-husband.' Still, some fans were left confused because it was established that Mrs. Brady's maiden name is Tyler. However, she went by Carol Martin before changing her last name to Brady upon her marriage to Mike. 8 Florence Henderson and Robert Reed in 1977. Courtesy Everett Collection 'What was interesting is, you mentioned, that they leave it,' Knight added during the podcast. 'They don't deal with Mr. Martin by reference even.' As for Mr. Brady's first wife, and the three Brady boys' real mother, the cast acknowledged that there was a 'really touching scene' in the first episode where Greg, Peter and Bobby talk about her – although she is never mentioned again. 'I think that's kind of sad,' Olsen, 63, said before calling attention to one particularly vague line of dialogue said by Mrs. Brady in the premiere episode. 8 Actress Susan Olsen as Cindy Brady in 'The Brady Bunch.' It is unclear if Mrs. Brady said that because her first husband passed away or because they divorced, and the viewers were reportedly left to decide. The lack of explanation about Mrs. Brady's first husband ultimately led to the plot of the 1996 film 'A Very Brady Sequel,' which followed 'The Brady Bunch Movie' from one year prior. 'A Very Brady Sequel' saw Tim Matheson play Mrs. Brady's alleged first husband, Roy Martin, who claimed to have suffered from amnesia and undergone plastic surgery. 8 Christopher Knight (Peter Brady) and Barry Williams (Greg Brady). The film saw Shelley Long play Carol Brady, Gary Cole play Mike Brady and Christine Taylor as the oldest daughter, Marcia Brady. In addition to discussing the mystery behind Carol's first husband, Olsen revealed on Tuesday that she 'almost died' on set while filming the pilot. 'The Brady Bunch' aired on ABC for five seasons from 1969 to 1974.
