Who Was the Biggest Star of the Bucs Rookie Minicamp?
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers completed their rookie minicamp over the weekend, and with a number of high-level picks from Green Bay and some quality players signed as undrafted free agents afterward, there was a measurable excitement heading into the event. Rookie hopefuls like safety Shilo Sanders, wideouts Emeka Egbuka and Tez Johnson, and corners Benjamin Morrison and Jacob Parrish were all present, hoping to impress the coaching staff. Advertisement However, one player stood out from all the others, per Scott Reynolds, who appeared on The JP Peterson Show on Wednesday. And that's former Central Arkansas edge rusher David Walker. "Jacob Parrish had two pick-6s and will probably play the nickel ... and that's a good sign," Reynolds said. "David Walker ... you can ask any members of the Bucs' brass which includes coaches and scouts, and the unanimous answer of who was the best player on the field is David Walker. He wowed everybody. ... This guy is going to be better than advertised." Tampa Bay needed help with the pass rush even after signing free agent Haason Reddick to a one-year "prove-it" deal and last year's second-round pick Chris Braswell still developing. Advertisement Walker led the FCS with 23 tackles for loss last season and 10.5 sacks. His size is still a concern at 6-1 and 263 pounds, but the Bucs like his intangibles and effort. noted Walker's "freaky power in his lower half and above-average attack portfolio" in its pre-draft profile. With the Bucs' current pass-rushing situation, Walker has a shot at making an immediate impact on the defense next season, which is desperately needed for the Bucs and the defense. Buccaneers Insider Details Todd Bowles Coach Marriage With Josh Grizzard
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will kick off the 2025 season with a new offensive coordinator for the third season in a row. Josh Grizzard was promoted to the role after just one season in the organization, serving as the pass game coordinator in 2024. The position opened up when Liam Coen left to become the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier in the offseason. Advertisement Coen served in the position just one season after taking over from Dave Canales, who departed in 2023 to become the head coach of the Carolina Panthers after one season at the help of the Bucs' offense. Grizzard will have some big shoes to fill as a first-time playcaller, taking over a top-three offense from Coen, and could look to his head coach, Todd Bowles, for direction. Bowles also serves as the team's defensive coordinator, and typically has his hands full with those responsibilities. But as Fox Sports' Greg Auman pointed out on The JP Peterson Show on on Wednesday, Bowles is always happy to help out. Advertisement "Todd's done a really good job with these hires. For you to pick two guys that we probably didn't know that well before they were hired, and then to elevate them into first-time play-calling NFL coordinators, and to have both of them be head coaches now," Auman said. "I don't know that he cares to be meddlesome in terms of, 'I think you should do this more, or use this look,' but going about making sure he's [Grizzard] comfortable, how to call plays, how to put together a game plan, how to recognize defenses. I think there's a little more oversight with him." Auman continued that Bowles has gotten younger each season with his new-hire offensive coordinator, as Grizzard is just 34, but the team shows confidence in him and his abilities. Jason Licht will, in certain cases, draft "d-bags and a—holes"
Various things can get a player removed from a team's draft board. In Tampa Bay, there's one category of prospect that isn't automatically excluded. The 'd-bags and assholes.' Via Buccaneers G.M. Jason Licht recently explained his willingness to tolerate certain antisocial personality traits during an appearance on The JP Peterson Show. 'We have a long process of defining who we're taking off [the draft board] and who we're not,' Licht said. 'Now just because a guy, maybe people don't like him, or he's a d-bag or an asshole, we're not just going to automatically take them off. It's got to affect their football character and it's got to affect the team. There's a lot of people that fit that description that are very good football players and maybe it works in their favor.' Indeed it can. Sometimes, it takes a d-bag and/or an asshole to embrace the physicality of playing football aggressively and effectively. "[T]here's a difference between a bad guy and an immature person, and we'll take immature and help them develop,' Licht said. 'But, you know, we just don't want people that are going to affect the locker room in a negative way that affects the performance of others and the team.' As often happens, objectively undesirable qualities can take a back seat to undeniable talent. 'We'll take a guy that's a little bit of a d-bag or an asshole if they can get to the quarterback, for sure,' Licht said. He didn't name names, unfortunately. But that makes sense. A d-bag and/or an asshole wouldn't take kindly to being publicly labeled a d-bag and/or an asshole.
