Trump vs Musk: CNN commentator uses trash bin to symbolise GOP chaos over feud, says 'heads are in garbage'
CNN commentator Scott Jennings with US President Trump (Image credits: X @ScottJenningsKY) CNN's conservative commentator Scott Jennings used humor, and a trash can, to illustrate how Republican allies are feeling about the growing rift between US President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk . During a panel on 'The Lead with Jake Tapper' Thursday, Jennings grabbed a nearby trash bin and shoved his head inside to demonstrate the GOP's frustration. 'Let me just tell you what every Republican is doing,' he said. 'Here's where we are today. Heads are in the garbage can right now. That's the state of everybody I know at the moment.' The stunt came as tensions between Trump and Musk escalated publicly. Musk, who had supported Trump since the 2024 election and served as head of the now-defunct department of government efficiency, DOGE, broke with the former president over his 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act.' Musk denounced the bill on X, calling it a 'disgusting abomination.' Their falling-out quickly spiraled on social media, with Musk even alleging Trump's name appears in documents related to Jeffrey Epstein . Jennings, while playful, acknowledged the seriousness of the split. 'It's an ugly day, and you hate it when your friends are fighting,' he said. He emphasized that the Trump-Musk alliance had previously played a crucial role and that their goals 'are not mutually exclusive.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esta nueva alarma con cámara es casi regalada en Mendoza (ver precio) Verisure Undo He urged Republicans to unify, warning that Democrats are gaining ground amid the chaos. 'Hopefully, cooler heads will soon prevail, and the president can get his agenda and Elon can convince the Republicans that the debt is a serious problem,' Jennings said. Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill,' currently under senate review, includes measures such as border security funding and eliminating taxes on overtime and tips.

As Jake Tapper's Biden Book Promotion Faces Criticism, CNN's Ratings Drop For His Show and Others
Jake Tapper's new book, 'Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again,' co-authored with Axios reporter Alex Thompson, has sparked a conversation about the ex-president's cognitive decline while in the White House. But the book's release, along with Tapper and Thompson's extensive media tour to promote it in the last month, has not helped the CNN star's ratings — or the shows that follow his. In fact, viewership for 'The Lead with Jake Tapper' suffered a noticeable year-over-year drop-off in May, posting its worst month since August 2015, according to Nielsen. And the three shows that follow his — 'Erin Burnett Upfront,' 'Anderson Cooper 360' and 'The Source With Kaitlan Collins' — all took significant hits as well, with each seeing its viewership drop 18% or more compared to a year ago. The ratings drop-off coincided with Tapper and Thompson's tour to promote 'Original Sin.' The book debuted in the top spot on The New York Times bestseller list, selling about 54,000 copies in its first week, and it currently ranks as the sixth-best seller on Amazon. Tapper's hosts on other CNN shows also heavily promoted the book. It was a tough month for CNN overall. After seeing its ratings rebound following a viewer exodus after the 2024 election, the channel lost that momentum in May, posting its second-lowest weekday primetime and total-day viewership ever; only December 2024 was worse. Here is a look at the ratings: 'The Lead With Jake Tapper,' per Nielsen data, dropped 25% from 701,000 viewers in May 2024 to 525,000 viewers last month. Cooper and Burnett's shows each lost more than 100,000 viewers compared to a year ago, dropping 18% year-over-year; and Collins' show took a 24% hit compared to a year ago, going from 611,000 viewers to 462,000. Tapper referred TheWrap to CNN's PR team when reached for comment. 'The award-winning program 'The Lead with Jake Tapper' reaches broad global audiences across CNN, CNN International and Max's streaming platform,' a CNN spokesperson told TheWrap. 'No single metric can capture the true reach and impact of a program driving the national conversation.' CNN shows like Tapper's are available on Max for streaming, which is not counted by Nielsen, although the channel did not share how much that may have boosted May ratings. MSNBC did not benefit from any disenchanted CNN viewers moving over to their channel, with its ratings dropping 24% month-over-month between April and May. Tapper and Thompson have made headlines while promoting the book — perhaps most notably when Tapper told Piers Morgan last week that the cover-up of Biden's cognitive decline was 'maybe even worse than Watergate.' During an interview on his own channel, Tapper said there was was 'not enough' coverage of Biden's health issues, including from himself. And while appearing on Megyn Kelly's show last month, Tapper said he called Lara Trump to apologize to her, after he ripped her in 2020 for claiming Biden was showing signs of cognitive decline. 'She saw something that I did not see at the time,' Tapper said. '100 percent. And I own that.' The media blitz hasn't appeared to help CNN's viewership, though, and has opened up the network, and Tapper, to criticism from both sides of the political aisle. Tapper and Thompson's mea culpas about the press' failings, and their own, haven't mollified conservatives, who have used the reporting in the book as evidence that the media downplayed Biden's health in an effort to prop up his candidacy, which Tapper has denied. 'Original Sin' has also faced attacks from the left, accusing Tapper of focusing on Biden when there are more pressing issues regarding the current administration. Weighing in on 'The Left Hook' podcast, writer Wajahat Ali described the book by saying, 'While the Trump Administration is galloping towards fascism and arguing to end birthright citizenship, corporate media remain complicit cowards by focusing on Joe Biden's age.'The post As Jake Tapper's Biden Book Promotion Faces Criticism, CNN's Ratings Drop For His Show and Others appeared first on TheWrap.

CNN's Chief National Security Correspondent Alex Marquardt Exits Months After Defamation Lawsuit
Alex Marquardt, CNN's chief national security correspondent, said on Monday he is leaving the cable channel after eight years. 'Tough to say goodbye but it's been an honor to work among the very best in the business,' he posted on X. 'Profound thank you to my comrades on the National Security team & the phenomenal teammates I've worked with in the U.S. and abroad.' Marquardt has most notably reported on the Russia-Ukraine war in the past few years. He was also at the center of a defamation lawsuit CNN settled with a U.S. Navy veteran earlier this year; a Florida jury found the network defamed the veteran when it implied he illegally profited from helping Afghans flee the country during a 2021 segment on 'The Lead with Jake Tapper.' The settlement was made hours after the jury found CNN owed Zachary Young $5 million in compensatory damages. Young sued CNN in June 2022 for defamation after he said their segment on him 'destroyed his reputation' and his security consulting business, Nemex Enterprises, Inc. The segment, reported on by Marquardt, said Young operated on the 'black market' and 'exploited' desperate Afghans fleeing the country following the U.S. Military's withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. During the trial, a message from Marquardt to a CNN colleague was shared in which he said 'we gonna nail this Zachary Young mf—-r.' He later added, 'Or not. Maybe he just slips away.' A CNN representative did not immediately respond to TheWrap's request for comment on whether Marquardt's exit had anything to do with the defamation lawsuit. Prior to CNN, Marquardt was an international reporter for ABC News. He did not share what his next move will be in his Monday X post. Jake Tapper's CNN show hits lowest ratings since 2015 despite new Biden book buzz, intense publicity tour
CNN host Jake Tapper had his lowest-rated month in nearly a decade in May despite a whirlwind publicity tour giving him an onslaught of attention. Tapper and Axios reporter Alex Thompson's new book, "Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again," was released in May to much fanfare. The book helped set the recent news cycle with new accusations of the Biden White House hiding the truth about the former president's fitness for office. To promote the project, Tapper has embarked on a wide-ranging book tour that landed him on a variety of podcasts, talk shows and cable news. The book has also been promoted relentlessly across CNN, but the spotlight on Tapper has seemingly failed to give him a boost in viewership. Tapper Admits Feeling 'Humility' About Past Biden Coverage As Liberals Disparage New Book "The Lead with Jake Tapper" averaged 525,000 total viewers from April 28 through May 25, shedding 25% of CNN's audience in its timeslot from the same period last year in the process. By comparison, Fox News offerings "The Five" and "Special Report with Bret Baier" averaged 3.3 million viewers from April 28 through May 25, trouncing Tapper. Read On The Fox News App MSNBC also beat Tapper among total viewers, as programming on the progressive network averaged a little over one million viewers in the timeslot. As a result, Tapper settled for only 11% of the cable news audience share, while MSNBC managed 21% and Fox News commanded 68% during the timeframe. It was Tapper's lowest-rated month since August 2015. Click Here For More Coverage Of Media And Culture "The Lead with Jake Tapper" is also down from last year among the advertiser-coveted demographic of adults aged 25-54. Tapper's newscast averaged only 95,000 viewers among the critical demo from April 28 through May 25, for a 15% drop. "The Lead with Jake Tapper" wasn't the only CNN offering to struggle, as the network had its second-worst month ever in the demo across both total day and primetime during May. While Tapper's efforts to promote "Original Sin" haven't helped viewership, the CNN host has managed to generate headlines by admitting he didn't report on Biden's age issues aggressively enough and declaring the cover-up of the former president's mental decline may be a worse scandal than Watergate. When reached for comment, CNN noted that Nielsen Media Research only reflects CNN's audience in the United States, but Tapper's program airs on other platforms. "The award-winning program The Lead with Jake Tapper reaches broad global audiences across CNN, CNN International and Max's streaming platform. No single metric can capture the true reach and impact of a program driving the national conversation," a CNN spokesperson told Fox News Digital.
