This Morning star shares heartbreaking update on dad's dementia battle 'he doesn't know her name'

ITV This Morning star Sian Welby has shared an update on her dad's health. This Morning star Sian Welby has shared a heartbreaking update on her dad's health after he was diagnosed with dementia. The 37-year-old radio presenter welcomed her first child in June 2024, but the joys of motherhood have been bittersweet as her father, Ian, is living with dementia and tragically can't recall his granddaughter Ruby's name. Sian, who made her debut co-hosting on the ITV daytime programme alongside Dermot O'Leary last year, has not shied away from discussing her father's health battle, having previously shared that he was "going through it" and voicing her fears about losing the man she recognises. In a poignant disclosure during a recent appearance on The Lulu Podcast, the broadcaster spoke candidly about the harsh reality of dementia and its toll on her family, yet she expressed gratitude that her father still recognises her. She said, "I'm very close to my dad. He's very funny, he is very sharp, so it's scary to think I was going to lose that because it's him, you know? "That's what's so cruel about it, that you won't wish on anyone. You're gonna lose the person. They're physically going to be there, but gradually, bit by bit, you're losing them. That was just horrible to imagine." She went on: "I'm very lucky - and I will say it out loud - I'm lucky that my dad seems to have reached a very stable stage where he's not particularly getting worse, he's having good days and bad days, but he still knows who I am, he knows I have a baby, he doesn't know her name, that doesn't bother me, but he always remembers that I've got a baby." Sian has been candid about her father's health struggles in recent years, including his battle with Covid-19 in 2022 following a cancer diagnosis, during which he lost six stone in just a fortnight. In an interview last year, the Capital radio host shared with OK!: "Thankfully, he won the fight. But it was awful. I don't know how he didn't die. There were some real low moments. "At one point, he thought we'd put him in a home; he was so disoriented." She further expressed feeling "very lucky" that her father recognises her. "He was overwhelmed, seeing me on the telly every day, the other week. When he's in the moment, he's very present," she added. This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1.

Backstreet Boys' AJ McLean opens about addiction struggle: "Fortunately, I missed a large bullet"

Backstreet Boys' AJ McLean opens about addiction struggle: "Fortunately, I missed a large bullet" Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean has opened up about his addiction to drugs, sharing how close he came to catastrophe at the peak of the opioid epidemic. In an interview, McLean discussed his path through addiction, the turning points that altered his life, and how he eventually found hope and healing. "Dodged a Huge Bullet" Amid the fentanyl crisis When he guested on The Lulu Podcast , McLean, who has had hits such as 'I Want It That Way,' revealed that his use of drugs came close to ending in tragedy, particularly since the fentanyl epidemic was growing worse. Operation Sindoor 'Pakistan army moving its troops in forward areas': Key takeaways from govt briefing 'Pak used drones, long-range weapons, jets to attack India's military sites' 'Attempted malicious misinformation campaign': Govt calls out Pakistan's propaganda "Fortunately for me, I avoided a gigantic bullet because the fentanyl epidemic hadn't reached the level that it is today, but it was occurring; it was there, but it wasn't quite as common knowledge as it is today," he disclosed. McLean admitted he was lucky to have retreated before things could have gone in a deadly direction. A turning point in Miami McLean spoke about a very bleak incident three and a half years ago that turned around his recovery. He shared, "I was doing a show in Miami on my own with a friend of mine and I went out that night. I went hard." The artist confessed that one thing led to another, and he was again taking drugs. Once he returned home, he tried to conceal his relapse by consuming lots of coffee and breath mints. "I consumed a c**p tonne of coffee and tried breath mints and all this rubbish," he stated. Even though he tried to keep his addiction hidden, McLean's wife knew about his issues already. "My wife had known all along and was simply waiting for me to be truthful, which was my greatest issue for decades-being truthful with anyone concerning it because I was attempting to make it work. And naturally, as we all know, it worked until it did not," he confessed. The stress of addiction ultimately led to the dissolution of his 13-year marriage, McLean and his wife having two daughters together. Family and recovery The 'Missing You' singer revealed that it was his daughter who ultimately inspired him to seek help and turn his life around. Hitting rock bottom, McLean recognized the need for change and is now grateful for the second chance he's been given. 'I hit rock bottom, but I'm glad to have come out of it better,' he reflected.
