The atmosphere during the chat reportedly grew so fraught that it caused physical signs of distress in the Princess of Wales. According to Harry's depiction in 'Spare', the intense air-clearing session at Kensington Palace saw Kate demand an apology from Meghan while clenching a leather sofa, which saw her "fingers turn white". Harry detailed in 'Spare' that Kate's request stemmed from a comment Meghan made about her pregnancy hormones, referring to it as "baby brain". Meghan apparently offered her apologies, justifying the contentious remark as commonplace amongst her circle of friends, reports the Mirror. The situation escalated when Harry alleged that William "pointed a finger at Meg", and reportedly admonished: "Well, it's rude, Meghan. These things are not done here." Harry claims Meghan retorted: "If you don't mind, keep your finger out of my face." In the new Channel 5 documentary 'Meghan vs Kate: The Meeting That Changed the Monarchy', Royal commentators suggest this encounter was pivotal for the Sussexes, setting in motion their eventual departure from Royal duties. Richard Kay of the Daily Mail posited that this was the moment "the seed of Megxit was sewn", while his colleague Sarah Hewson reflected: "Had that meeting been a success, had they been able to put their differences aside, things would have been very different indeed." Newsweek's chief Royal correspondent Jack Royston commented: "If only they'd listened. If Meghan had listened to what was being said to her, she could have changed way back in 2018. "And even if they had still quit the monarchy, they could have saved themselves so much pain and so much conflict." He went on: "What happened in that room back in June 2018 was the defining element of the relationship between the two couples that ripped the monarchy to pieces." Valentine Low, a noted Royal author, also remarked: "They had pathetic little differences that should have been sorted out in two minutes. But it helped fuel the flames." Harry's candid reflections in his memoir 'Spare' come as Meghan shared her experiences with the royals on their Netflix series. Recounting their earliest encounters, she expressed surprise at the private formality of the Royal family members. In the second instalment of their six-part Netflix documentary, 'Harry and Meghan', the Duchess discussed her first impressions of her brother-in-law and wife Kate. "When Will and Kate came over, and I met her for the first time, they came over for dinner, I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot," Meghan explained. "I was a hugger. I've always been a hugger, I didn't realise that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits." The mother-of-two elaborated further on the Royal customs saying: "I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside. "There is a forward-facing way of being, and then you close the door and go 'You can relax now', but that formality carries over on both sides. And that was surprising to me." He says the two women had a row over bridesmaid dresses in the lead-up to his wedding that left Meghan in tears and that Kate "grimaced" when the duchess borrowed her lipgloss. Both couples decided to have a clear-the-air chat shortly after the Sussexes' honeymoon. However, things got so tense that Kate's fingers supposedly went white. Harry describes the moment in his memoir after he and Meghan were invited over to see William and Kate for tea at their Kensington Palace apartment. He recalls how both couples aired their grievances including Kate, who asked for an apology from Meghan as she gripped a leather sofa so tightly her "fingers were white". According to Spare, Kate wanted Meghan to say sorry for making a remark about her hormones and having "baby brain" while she was pregnant. The book then recounts how Meghan apologised and explained that is how she speaks to her friends. But the encounter took a turn when Harry claims William "pointed a finger at Meg", then allegedly blasted: "Well, it's rude, Meghan. These things are not done here." Prince William and Prince Harry were already at loggerheads just a month after the Duke of Sussex married Meghan Markle, with the 'fab four' meeting to clear the air Just one month on from the wedding of Prince Harry and American actor Meghan Markle, cracks in the bond between the Duke of Sussex and his brother Prince William were already becoming evident. In what seemed a move to resolve their differences, June 2018 saw the brothers and their spouses meet at Kensington Palace. Yet, looming over this urgent summit was Prince William's sharp two-word remark that, with hindsight, showed the growing rift within royal r elations. Royal expert Camilla Tominey points out that Meghan's appointment as the fourth patron of the Royal Foundation led to conflict, revealing "how much tension there was between them". The dynamics are explored in the upcoming Channel 5 dramatisation, 'Meghan vs Kate: The Meeting That Changed the Monarchy', where Talk TV's Royal Editor Sarah Hewson recounts: "It was a late afternoon in June 2018, Harry and Meghan were heading over to Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace for 'clear the air' talks with William and Kate." Once viewed as the modern face of the monarchy, the unity of the once-dubbed "fab four" was shattered by the outcomes of this pivotal discussion, reports Cambridgeshire Live. Whispers had emerged that Meghan's off-camera conduct had rankled a member of the Kensington Palace team, with Kate reportedly taking issue with the former TV star's attitude towards the palace staff. Royal biographer Andrew Morton has suggested that Catherine may have felt "threatened" by Meghan's presence. With a successful acting career spanning over 15 years, Meghan brought a level of confidence and outspokenness rarely seen among Royal wives. Tensions were also brewing between the two brothers. It was later decided the Fab Four would not play onstage together as a band again." She observed that Kate seemed to be eclipsed by Meghan's presence: "When it was Kate's moment to speak, she was strikingly less articulate, as well as brief." Following this, the two couples would only make joint public appearances during larger Royal events, such as the Commonwealth Day services or the Trooping the Colour ceremony. It wasn't until nearly two years later that Harry and Meghan would publicly declare their intention to "step back as 'senior' members" of the Royal Family, planning to divide their time between the UK and the US, and pursue financial independence.
