A California judge resentenced Erik and Lyle Menendez on Tuesday, clearing the way for the brothers to possibly be released from prison sometime in the near future. According to NBC News, Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic handed down a new sentence of 50 years to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
Erik and Lyle were initially sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of murdering their parents, José and Kitty Mendez, in 1996. In recent years, however, the release of new evidence, the popularity of the Netflix series The Mendez Brothers: Murder Most Foul, and increased awareness of the sexual abuse the brothers endured at the hands of their father have sparked a shift in public opinion, with many people calling for a resentencing.
The brothers will next appear before a state parole board on June 13th.
