Deborra-Lee Furness Says 'Breakdown' of Hugh Jackman Marriage Is a 'Profound Wound That Cuts Deep'

When the pair, who share two kids, announced their separation in a joint statement back in September 2023, they said they "decided to separate to pursue our individual growth" after a "wonderful, loving marriage." They concluded at the time, "This is the sole statement either of us will make."
Then, after news that Furness officially filed for divorce on May 23, nearly two years after the split, the actress issued a revealing statement about "betrayal" and the "breakdown" of her marriage.
"My heart and compassion goes out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal. It's a profound wound that cuts deep," Furness, 69, said in a statement provided to PEOPLE and first shared with The Daily Mail, adding, "However, I believe in a higher power and that God or the universe, whatever you relate to as your guidance, is always working for us."
That belief, she said, has "helped me navigate the breakdown of an almost three-decade marriage."

"I have gained much knowledge and wisdom through this experience. Even when we are presented with apparent adversity, it is leading us to our greatest good, our true purpose," she added. "It can hurt, but in the long run, returning to yourself and living within your own integrity, values and boundaries is liberation and freedom."
Furness and Jackman, 56, met on the set of an Australian television series in 1995 and got married the next year. In her statement to the Daily Mail, Furness said she is still "grateful" for their relationship and explained that "none of this is personal."
"We are all on our individual journeys and I believe that the relationships in our lives are not random. We are drawn to people, we invite them in, in order to learn our lessons and to recognize and heal the broken parts of ourselves," she concluded. "I remain grateful."
After the split, Jackman's romance with Sutton Foster was confirmed when the two were photographed holding hands on a date in Los Angeles in January 2025. Jackman and Foster, 50, shared the stage on Broadway when they did The Music Man together in 2022. Foster filed for divorce from her husband Ted Griffin, with whom she shares a daughter, in October 2024 after 10 years of marriage.
