Former Fox News host Hilton enters California governor race

Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host, announced Monday he was entering the California gubernatorial race, looking to become Gov. Gavin Newsom's (D) successor. In a video announcement posted to the social platform X, Hilton highlighted his past, growing up in London and eventually moving to California and becoming a U.S. citizen. The businessman, author and former TV anchor criticized the Democratic leaders who have long held power in the western blue state and argued it was time for change. 'This is not just any other state. California means to America what America means to the world,' Hilton said. 'Let's make California the land of opportunity again. Great jobs, great homes, great kids.' 'There's only one way to do that,' he later said. 'We've got to end the one-party rule that got us into this mess. It's time to end the years of Democrat failure.' His video showed photos of Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and former Vice President Kamala Harris, who also served as California attorney general. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Hilton said he sees the election as a 'life-or-death moment' to fix the Democratic rule in the state. Hilton is the second prominent Republican to enter the 2026 gubernatorial race, following Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco. With Newsom restricted due to term limits, the race is wide open for a stacked primary. Bianco and Hilton face a challenge, though, as California has not elected a Republican governor since Arnold Schwarzenegger's 2006 reelection. Many of the state's Democrats say they would support Harris if she chose to run in the race after suffering a brutal presidential loss last year. The former vice president hasn't thrown her name in yet, but Democrats could also support former Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.), who announced her campaign in March. Former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra also launched a bid earlier this month. Hilton, 55, said in his video that he was inspired to work with Margaret Thatcher, the former United Kingdom prime minister. In 2012, he and his wife moved to California, while she worked for Google and he taught at Stanford University. Hilton hosted 'The Next Revolution,' a weekly show on Fox News from 2017 to 2023, and he is the founder and former CEO of Crowdpac, a tech startup. He's an avid supporter of President Trump's and called for an investigation into the 2020 presidential election when Trump lost to former President Biden. While Hilton and other Republicans face an uphill battle in the statewide race, his Silicon Valley ties may help if donors spend on his campaign, The New York Times reported. 'It's time for a new future,' Hilton's video concluded. 'That's why I'm running for governor to make this beautiful state that we love so much, truly golden again.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Former adviser to David Cameron enters California governor race

A former adviser to David Cameron has entered the race to become the next governor of California. Steve Hilton, who served as director of strategy for the former prime minister, is the second prominent Republican to announce their candidacy for the 2026 contest to replace Gavin Newsom. 'California means to America what America means to the world. Let's make California the land of opportunity again — great jobs, great homes, great kids. Let's make California an inspiration again, the very best of America,' he said in a video announcing his bid on Monday. 'There's only one way to do that. We've got to end the one-party rule that got us into this mess. It's time to end the years of Democrat failure. It's time for a new future. That's why I'm running for governor, to make this beautiful state that we love so much truly golden again.' Mr Hilton, who plans an official campaign announcement event in Huntington Beach on Tuesday, would be the state's first Republican leader since Arnold Schwarzenegger, should he be elected. A close confidant of Lord Cameron during his time in No 10, the Silicon Valley entrepreneur made headlines for the £276,000 salary the Tories paid him as he sought to modernise government. He was seen as the brains behind the Tories' drive to detoxify their party after three general election defeats but made enemies in government with plans to radically reduce the size of the Civil Service. The Fox News contributor would walk the corridors of power in shorts and a T-shirt and was satirised by BBC comedy The Thick of It as the herbal tea sipping publicist Stewart Pearson. He resigned from his post in 2012 and moved to California, settling in the affluent Silicon Valley community of Atherton with his wife Rachel Whetstone and their two children. He became a US citizen in May 2021. He backed Brexit in 2016 in a further break with his former boss, who headed up the remain campaign. Writing for Fox News in 2016, Mr Hilton announced his support for Donald Trump. The following year he went on to become a regular presenter on the Right-wing channel, hosting The Next Revolution. A staunch supporter of Mr Trump, Mr Hilton used his platform to demand an investigation into false claims the 2020 election was rigged. Clips of Mr Hilton making the demands on Fox News were tweeted by Mr Trump. It is not clear who from the Democratic party will throw their hat into the ring to replace Mr Newsom as California governor, although Kamala Harris is said to be weighing her options following her defeat in the 2024 presidential race. As the wounded Democratic Party struggles to regroup, Mr Newsom, who is rumoured to be mulling a 2028 presidential campaign, has interviewed prominent conservatives on his new podcast, This is Gavin Newsom. In doing so, he has stunned members of his own party, by agreeing with his guests on issues such as restricting transgender athlete's participation in women's in sports. Mr Newsom also called dismantling police departments 'lunacy' and remained silent when Steve Bannon, an architect of Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, said Mr Trump won the 2020 presidential election.
