Mafia: The Old Country Won't Be Open World and Will Cost $50
Mafia: The Old Country will release on Aug. 8, 2025, publisher 2K Games announced today. The game, developed by Hangar 13, will feature a standard edition for $49.99 and a deluxe edition for $59.99, and will be available for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, as well as prepurchase on PC via Steam. You can check out the first official gameplay trailer. "Mafia: The Old Country is a compelling story that doesn't require a massive time commitment, and we believe these prices reflect the value of this highly polished linear narrative experience," the developer said in a statement. This is good news, considering the cost of most games and consoles is set to increase. A game that doesn't break the bank, yet promises a compelling story and action-focused gameplay seems right up my alley. No open world, no problem If you were expecting the next installment in the Mafia series to be a sprawling, open-world romp through the organized crime world, think again. But honestly, that's probably for the best. Screenshot by Evan Zimmer/CNET The game's visuals look great, and the action-focused combat seems compelling. If it's anything like Mafia: Definitive Edition -- which was excellent and delivered a similarly shorter, linear game with an emphasis on story and characters -- it'll be a day-one buy for me. What's Mafia: The Old Country about? This time around, Hanger 13 is turning back the clock to the 1900s. Mafia: The Old Country puts players in control of Enzo Favara as he navigates the dark underworld of Sicily. You'll join the Torrisi crime family and uncover the origins of organized crime in Hanger 13's Mafia series. The game seeks to deliver an authentic, mob-movie experience. It'll take players across crumbling Sicilian ruins and sprawling vineyards, filled with a colorful cast of unpredictable allies and rival gangs. The game's FAQ page says there'll be a mix of gunplay and stealth mechanics, along with close-quarters knife fights and races on horseback and behind the wheel. You can preorder the game now and make your oaths to the Cosa Nostra when it comes out in August.

'Mafia: The Old Country' Gets Aug Release, Returning To Linear Roots
2K Games and Hangar 13 have finally unveiled the first gameplay trailer for the highly anticipated crime adventure sequel Mafia: The Old Country , promising a return to the franchise's linear roots by providing a focused, narrative experience. Best of all, the game is just three months out from its release on 8 August 2025. Announced via an in-depth developer insights trailer, the game will bring the crime franchise away from the hustle and bustle of its usual city setting, instead set in the rural countryside of 1900s Sicily, birthplace of organised crime. The game follows the story of Enzo Favara, a man with a troubled past, as he joins and rises through the ranks of Don Torrisi's crime family. Built on Unreal Engine 5, the game will feature the familiar cover shooting formula seen in past games like the original game's 2020 remake, Mafia: Definitive Edition , with a stronger emphasis on stealth and hand-to-hand combat. According to the developers, ammo is set to be scarce, encouraging players to tactically manage their resources and not just go in guns blazing. As with all Mafia games, fans can also expect an abundance of period-accurate vehicles to traverse the countryside, alongside the introduction of horse-riding, with the trailer even revealing the ability to shoot firearms while on horseback. Following fans' tepid response to the open-world design of 2016's Mafia III , Mafia: The Old Country will bring the series back to its roots by providing 'a focused, linear experience that combines quality storytelling, authentic era immersion and a refined take on the familiar Mafia gameplay', as said by developer Hangar 13's president Nick Baynes in a news release, explaining that this approach allowed the team to 'deliver a story that's gritty, grounded, brutal and emotional.' 'We think there's a large audience for compelling stories that don't require massive time commitments,' added 2K Games president David Ismalier, who also explained that the game could 'easily complement the other more persistent games our players also love and engage with on a more consistent basis.' Having a less time-consuming, linear experience is a smart move for the title, especially since it differentiates it from the other crime-related third-person adventure, the recently delayed Grand Theft Auto VI . Due to its linear nature and smaller scope compared to many other open-world titles in recent years, Mafia: The Old Country will also launch with a much more wallet-friendly price tag, with its standard edition being only S$70 on Steam, which is surprising in this age of S$100 AAA game releases. Fans don't have to wait too long to jump into the game either, as it will release on 8 August 2025 for the PS5, Xbox Series X and PC. Mafia: The Old Country has an official release date and a new trailer
If you're still mourning the GTA 6 delay, Mafia: The Old Country is here to fill the void. Today, 2K and Hangar 13 gave an official release date of August 8, 2025 and dropped a new gameplay trailer that shows the gritty, bloody criminal underworld of Sicily like never before. There's also a new Developer Insights video that gives you a behind-the-scenes look at what went into the development of the latest Mafia entry. The latest trailers give us a better idea of the gameplay, showing a combination of stealth, gunplay, and a car chase in old-school vehicles. Players have a variety of options on how to approach a situation; even if stealth might be the best way in one scenario, you can quickly swap to a guns-blazing approach if things go sideways. Recommended Videos The Developer Insights video also suggests that The Old Country won't require a huge time commitment. 'We think there's a large audience for compelling stories that don't require massive time commitments,' said 2K President David Ismailer. 'We're excited to offer a game like Mafia: The Old Country in our portfolio, and to provide a linear highly-polished narrative experience that can easily complement the other more persistent games our players also love and engage with on a more consistent basis.' The Old Country is described as 'brutal and grounded in all the best ways.' It's not open world; instead, the game is a more linear, tightly-crafted narrative that takes the player through a story that would be right at home in a classic mob movie. 'Authenticity and immersion are key,' says game director Alex Cox. 'The best crime stories have an unforgettable twist, and this game's no exception. The players are in for a treat.' Mafia: The Old Country will be available in both Standard and Deluxe Editions, and both are available for preorder starting today. The Standard edition will be available for $50, while the Deluxe Edition is $60 and includes numerous cosmetic upgrades, extra items, and a digital artbook.
