Max Homa finds some PGA Championship magic after tears and toxic spiral

The American star grabs his lowest-ever Major round after months of golfing anguish Resilient Max Homa surged from tears and toxic spiral to triumph as he rifled his way back into Major contention. The popular American shot his lowest-ever round in one of the big-four events with a fabulous second-day 64 at The PGA Championship. ‌ Homa has been through the golfing wringer in the past year after a dramatic and dismal loss of form. Having provided a rare American highlight at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome and finishing tied-third at Masters last year, the 34-year-old was storming his way into the elite of the game. ‌ However, in an instant, it began to fall apart for Homa as he dropped off a golfing cliff with a string of awful results and the emotional star had tears in his eyes at The Players Championship two months ago after another forgettable effort. Homa changed everything. His club manufacturer, his coach and, finally, things appear to heading back on track. He almost had a one-in-hole at the par four 14th as he scorched around the Charlotte track in seven-under par to rocket up the leaderboard. It's been a slog for Homa, but the signs are good again and, post Friday's inspiring effort, he said: 'It's been hard certain weeks. I play well and don't get much out of it and it's actually easier to be patient then because I just see my kind of runway. "Like I know I'll find it at some point. There's been some weeks where it just felt terrible and it's hard to see what next season's going to hold in a good way. 'So just been trying to be a little bit more present and focus on what I'm doing, but last week and then the week prior at home, I found a lot of form. Last week I played awesome. I know I got 30th, but I just scored poorly, so it was nice. Last week was the first week where I left there and thought I could have won my golf tournament had I done a better job, but I hadn't been in that position in a while where the game actually felt great. 'I was excited to come here because it just felt like things were lining up a little bit better. I played so well yesterday and didn't score well, had a bad finish, woke up kind of in a good mood, excited to play. It wasn't quite back against the wall, but I needed a good round and just found a little groove. I just haven't put up a low round in a while, so it just feels nice.' On his near albatross, he said: 'I caught it just like the perfect amount off the toe. You can't see it, it's one of those rare shots where you walk up and it gets closer as you get closer to the green! So very lucky and happy to be able to just brush one in for two.'

2025 PGA Championship Round 2 leaderboard, live updates: Jhonattan Vegas leads early at Quail Hollow as stars struggle

Jhonattan Vegas is out in front early at Quail Hollow. Vegas used an incredible finish where he posted five birdies in six holes to get to 7-under on Thursday afternoon. That gave him a two-shot lead over the rest of the field, and made him the first Venezuelan man to ever lead at a major championship. Vegas overtook Cam Davis and Ryan Gerard, who held the lead most of the day Thursday at the PGA Championship with their 5-under 66s. Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler, who entered the week as a narrow favorite, rallied a bit to end his opening round. He made two birdies in his final three holes to get to 2-under. Last year's winner, Xander Schauffele, finished at 1-over. Rory McIlroy, fresh off his win at the Masters, came in at 3-over. Scheffler and Schauffele were among the players complaining about the mud balls all over the course, which caused them each to make a double bogey on the same hole. The cut is projected to be at 2-over, though it's sure to move around quite a bit throughout the day. But how deep is too deep to resurface? According to Elias Sports Bureau, only two players have ever won the PGA Championship after being outside the top 50 on the leaderboard: Payne Stewart, 1989 Kemper Lakes GC, T-77 after Round 1 John Mahaffey, 1978 Oakmont CC, T-59 after Round 1 So, good luck, gentlemen, and maybe start making a birdie or two. The course is going to have its revenge. Check out the roll this putt gets on the dried, sloping green: Wait for it… 😱Welcome to Friday at The PGA Championship — NUCLR GOLF (@NUCLRGOLF) May 16, 2025 Oh, there will be some angry players today. The first ace of the tournament went to Eric Cole, who played the par-3 fourth perfectly on Thursday. 🚨 ACE ALERT 🚨Eric Cole makes a hole-in-one from 184 yards on the 4th hole. #PGAChamp — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 15, 2025 CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hello from Charlotte, where the rains are done and the warmth is rolling in. Highs today are expected to touch 90, meaning the water that's still soaking the course — and there's still a whole lot of it — is going to turn Quail Hollow into a sauna. That's no problem for those watching at home, but for the players, it's an added layer of challenge, and for the gallery, it's a reminder to stay hydrated and seek shade often. This will be a decisive day at the PGA Championship, and it's going to be a hot one, too. The mud that runs beneath Quail Hollow's fairways, thanks to the rain that fell earlier in the week, led to a lot if issues on Thursday. 'It's frustrating to hit the ball in the middle of the fairway and get mud on it and have no idea where it's going to go,' Scottie Scheffler said. 'I understand it's part of the game, but there's nothing more frustrating for a player. You spend your whole life trying to learn how to control a golf ball, and due to a rules decision all of a sudden you have absolutely no control over where that golf ball goes.' YouTube targets TV dollars with NFL deal, bingeable 'shows' from creators

YouTube announced a range of initiatives designed to attract more TV ad dollars to its platform at Brandcast, its annual Upfront event for advertisers. Notably, the Google-owned video service is expanding its relationship with the NFL and plans to exclusively stream the NFL's first Friday game of the 2025-2026 season. It's also preparing to pilot a new way for creators to reach the audience that watches YouTube on TV through easily organized and bingeable TV shows. The latter was first announced at YouTube's Made On YouTube event last September, where CEO Neal Mohan explained that creators making a majority of their revenue on TV screens was up more than 30% year-over-year. A new feature being offered to select creators in the pilot program will allow them to organize their content into seasons and episodes -- just like a "real" TV show. In addition to new efforts around "shoppable TV" and tools that let advertisers target major cultural moments like awards season or The PGA Championship, for instance, the company is once again sending a message to advertisers that it's not just an online video service, it's actually the new way people watch "TV." As part of its NFL deal, YouTube says it will exclusively stream the first Friday game hosted in São Paulo, Brazil, to a worldwide audience. This marks the first time that YouTube has served as a live broadcaster for the NFL, it notes. (In the U.S., the game will be available to YouTube TV subscribers.) The company pointed out that users last year watched over 350 million hours of NFL content on the platform, according to its internal data, and had pulled in over 6 million live views when it streamed the NFL's Super Bowl LIX Flag Football Game. Its expanded deal with the NFL will see it streaming that Flag Football game over multiple years to come. For creators, YouTube's pitch focuses on bringing their content to the living room. Hundreds of creators will be a part of the initial pilot, expected to launch in the U.S. this summer, that will allow them to organize their content into a viewing experience designed for the big screen. Creators like Michelle Khare's Challenge Accepted and Good Mythical Morning with Rhett & Link will use the new tools to turn their content into "seasons" and "episodes," to make their content more bingeable on TV. The company is also rolling out ways to shop from YouTube with QR codes and other send-to-phone functionality, and will look to Gemini AI to match ads to popular, relevant content. During Brandcast, YouTube featured various case studies from brands like Volvo, Inspire Brands (Dunkin'), Hilton, and State Farm, that have used its advertiser tools to reach their audiences. It also reminded marketers that YouTube has been No. 1 in streaming watch time in the U.S. for more than two years, putting it ahead of Netflix, Disney, and Prime Video as of March 2025. The company also touted its more recent focus on podcasts, where it now sees over 1 billion monthly active podcast users. Sign in to access your portfolio

The Rory McIlroy skill that is best in golf history as Scottie Scheffler waxes lyrical over PGA Championship rival

The World No1 offered gushing praise to the Northern Irishman as they get set to go at it at Quail Hollow Impressed Scottie Scheffler reckons Rory McIlroy is the best in history when it comes to driving. The World No1 offered gushing praise to the Northern Irishman as the pair prepare to lock horns at The PGA Championship. ‌ Scheffler, like many stars during the day's media duties, was asked to pick a part of someone else's game he would choose to take if he had to. ‌ As well as praising peers such as Sam Burns and Jordan Spieth for skills, he gave the ultimate recognition to McIlroy's ability with the big dog in his hand. Scheffler said: 'You look at a guy like Rory, I mean, you'd be hard pressed to find anybody that has drove the ball better than he has in the history of the game. "He might be the best driver of the ball that we've ever seen. You had a guy like Tiger, had a ton of speed. "But Rory just has the accuracy is what sets him apart, too. Not only does he hit it really far, he hits it really straight.' McIlroy's success this season is driving Scheffler as the duo get set for Quail Hollow and he added: 'It's always motivating when you just get beat. "And in golf, you tend to get beat a lot. You don't really get to win that many tournaments and Rory's been off to a great start this year. ‌ 'He's definitely improved and made some changes in his game from last year, so there's always little things that I'm trying to do to get better and I think that's why I keep coming back. "Golf's kind of an endless pursuit of getting the best out of yourself and I'm looking forward to continuing to do that as the year goes on. Rory's been been playing some great golf this year. 'It was really cool to see Rory be able to finish that off [Grand Slam] and to be there for that moment. He's a he's a good buddy of mine out here and I was very happy for him. ‌ "Having to answer each year, for a guy that's had one of the best careers in the history of the game, and have to be asked about one single golf tournament. "I'm sure it can be a bit frustrating. I'm sure that's why there was so much emotion coming out of him. 'It takes a lifetime of of work to to be able to even have a chance to win major championships, let alone win all four of them. It's pretty cool to see.' ‌ McIlroy and Scheffler will be joined in a superstar three-ball on Thursday and Friday by defending champion and World No.3 Xander Schauffele. The World No.1 said: 'I'm playing with two guys that are playing some of the best golf in the world. "Xander won two majors last year and Rory already won a Players and the Masters this year, so he's playing some fantastic golf. 'It should be a lot of fun. I've seen that pairing before and we have a good time out there and it's competitive. "I think when when I look back on my career, these will be some of the fondest memories I have getting to play with some of the best players in the world and compete to try and win tournaments.'
