Naga Munchetty's row with 'devastated' mum over 'wicked' decision

BBC Breakfast star Naga Munchetty has opened up on a huge decision she made with her husband which has impacted her mum Naga Munchetty has confessed that her decision not to have children with husband James Haggar caused a "rift" with her mum before the duo eventually managed to smooth things over. The 50-year-old BBC host spoke to Ateh Jewel on HELLO!' s Second Act podcast about how her mother was originally "devastated" that Naga would not be giving her any grandchildren. However, Naga has said that her mum "gets it now" after seeing her daughter "thrive" in her television career and living a good life with her other half. She recalled: 'My mum was devastated; she was from a different generation. ‌ "(But she) gets it now. She is so proud of me and so happy to see me happy and thriving. It was a conscious (decision) and I am doing lots of other things and living a very fulfilling life. She doesn't think I've wasted an opportunity. My mum has evolved in that sense.' ‌ Naga and her husband James tied the knot in 2007 after dating for several years. He also enjoys a successful broadcasting career as a television director and broadcast consultant, directing Sky News' panel programme The Pledge. Before joining Sky, he had a long-term position as a senior director at CNBC International. He was also the senior director for Five News and OK TV for seven years prior to his role at CNBC, as well as a stint with ITV studios. The pair mutually decided to not have children due to their prosperous careers. Speaking to The Times, Naga previously shared her thoughts on the life choice. ‌ She said: "We never tried and I never miscarried, we just never really wanted them. We kept putting the decision off, then life got better for us, we became more selfish . . . and just didn't find the time." She also addressed strong opinions others had about her choice, telling The Sun that she was branded "wicked" for "denying" her mother of grandchildren, adding: "It's quite interesting, isn't it, how people react?" ‌ Naga also discussed why she thinks the conversations surrounding women deciding to not have kids have changed in recent years. She said: "Once-up-on-a-time it used to be thought that if you had a career you were being selfish because you were just focusing on the career. "I don't think that is the attitude now. ‌ "Now it is just too hard, it's too expensive with childcare, and (lack of) flexibility in workplace. It is hard. "I am not saying you shouldn't have children, but there are more barriers to having children enjoyably." Naga has also candidly opened up about her health issues due to adenomyosis, which is a gynaecological condition that sees the lining of the womb grow into the muscular wall. The presenter suffered with painful heavy bleeding, fainting, vomiting and severe aching every two and a half weeks for 32 years before she finally received a private medical diagnosis of adenomyosis. Naga now takes medication "to suppress the production of my hormones" which helps with the symptoms she struggled with.
