US and Iran make ‘very serious' progress toward new nuclear deal after Oman talks, eye Europe next
The US and Iran made 'very serious' progress toward a new nuclear deal during marathon negotiations Saturday in Oman — with both sides exchanging written proposals for the first time and eyeing further talks as soon as next week. A senior US official told The Post the four-hour talks with Tehran were 'positive and productive' but still cautioned that 'there is still much to do.' 'We agreed to meet again soon, in Europe, and we thank our Omani partners for facilitating these talks,' the official added. US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in Oman fresh off a Friday meeting in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin, underscoring the high-level stakes at play. 4 U.S. President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff attends a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Russia, April 25, 2025. via REUTERS 4 Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi speaks to the media during the signing ceremony for his book 'The Power of Negotiation' at the Muscat International Book fair on April 25, 2025. AFP via Getty Images President Trump said the situation is 'coming out very well' during conversations aboard Air Force One on Saturday, warning that there should be a peaceful deal rather than the alternative. 'We've had a lot of talks with them and I think we're going to have a deal. I'd much rather have a deal than the other alternative,' Trump said. 'That would be good for humanity.' The discussions in the capital city of Muscat marked a major shift from the previous two meetings, diving much further into technical details on limiting Iran's nuclear program and lifting US sanctions, Iranian Foriegn Minister Abbas Araghchi said. 4 In this photo released by Iranian Foreign Ministry, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, left, speaks with an unidentified Omani official upon his arrival at Muscat, Oman, Friday, April 25, 2025. AP 'This time, the negotiations were much more serious than in the past, and we gradually entered into deeper and more detailed discussions,' Araghchi told Iranian state media, adding, however, that differences still remain on major issues. While Tehran has suggested a follow-up meeting could happen as soon as next weekend in Europe, Trump administration officials have only said they expect talks to continue soon. Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi, who mediated the talks, said the two sides identified a 'shared aspiration' to reach an agreement based on 'mutual respect and enduring commitments.' 4 Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, visits the Muscat International Book Fair in Oman, Friday, April 25, 2025. AP 'Talks will continue next week with a further high-level meeting provisionally scheduled for May 3rd,' he posted to X. The negotiations came against the backdrop of fresh unrest inside Iran, where a massive explosion at a southern port Saturday killed at least eight people and injured more than 700. Iranian authorities said the blast appeared tied to the mishandling of combustible chemicals used to make missile fuel that were stored at the port. Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian ordered an investigation of the incident.

Iran's FM Araghchi arrives in Oman ahead of nuclear talks with US
Iran's top diplomat Abbas Araghchi arrived in Oman yesterday ahead of fresh nuclear talks with the United States, after both sides said progress had been made in previous rounds. The local Mehr news agency reported Araghchi had arrived in the Omani capital Muscat for Saturday's negotiations, releasing a brief video showing the foreign minister disembarking from an Iranian government plane. Araghchi will be leading what ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei described as a delegation of diplomats and technical experts for indirect discussions with the US side. Iran's top diplomat was a negotiator of the landmark nuclear accord abandoned by Trump during his first term in 2018. Araghchi refused to discuss the talks as he signed copies of an Arabic translation of his book, 'The Power of Negotiation' at a book fair in Muscat on Friday.

US gets down to details in Iran nuke talks
US gets down to details in Iran nuke talks Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi attends a book fair where he signs his book 'The Power of Negotiation', in Muscat, Oman. Photo: Reuters Iran and the United States prepared on Saturday to start in-depth negotiations in Oman over Tehran's rapidly advancing nuclear program, talks that likely will hinge on the Islamic Republic's enrichment of uranium. Iranian state television suggested the talks could start mid-day on Saturday in Muscat, the mountain-wrapped capital of this sultanate on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula. However, neither Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi nor US Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff offered any immediate specifics or details on the talks that they'll lead. Araghchi arrived on Friday in Oman and met with its Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, who has mediated the two previous round of talks in Muscat and Rome. Araghchi then visited the Muscat International Book Fair, surrounded by television cameras and photojournalists. Late Saturday morning footage showed Araghchi heading for the talks. Witkoff was in Moscow on Friday meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin. He arrived on Saturday in Oman, where the talks were expected to start in the coming hours, a source familiar said. The talks seek to limit Iran's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of some of the crushing economic sanctions the United States has imposed on the Islamic Republic closing in on half a century of enmity . US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to unleash airstrikes targeting Iran's program if a deal isn't reached. Iranian officials increasingly warn that they could pursue a nuclear weapon with their stockpile of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels. Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers did limit Tehran's program. However, Trump unilaterally withdrew from it in 2018, setting in motion years of attacks and tensions. The wider Middle East also remains on edge over the devastating Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip . Trump, traveling to Rome for the funeral of Pope Francis, again said he hoped negotiations would lead to a new nuclear deal. However, he still held out the possibility of a military strike if they didn't. 'The Iran situation is coming out very well,' Trump said on Air Force One. 'We've had a lot of talks with them and I think we're going to have a deal. I'd much rather have a deal than the other alternative. That would be good for humanity." He added: 'There are some people that want to make a different kind of a deal – a much nastier deal – and I don't want that to happen to Iran if we can avoid it.' While Araghchi and Witkoff are again expected to speak through the Omanis, experts on both sides also will begin negotiating details of a possible deal. From the Iranian side, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-e Ravanchi will lead Tehran's expert team. The US technical team will be led by Michael Anton, the director of Secretary of State Marco Rubio's policy planning staff. Anton does not have the nuclear policy experience of those who led America's efforts in the 2015 talks. (AP)
