Women and the Climate Crisis in Iraq

UK-based NGO Oxfam has published a new report titled, " The Private Sphere Trap -- Women and the climate crisis in Iraq. "
The report argues:
" Women in Iraq are traditionally limited to only taking leading roles in spaces that have customarily been seen as their responsibility, such as care provision, raising children, and household duties.
"Such perceptions of their role restrict their voices and decision-making power to private spaces while excluding them from wider decision-making processes. Within this context, women are facing multilayered barriers to taking an active and leading role in the climate change actions needed to increase Iraq's adaptation to and mitigation of the climate crisis that is facing the country.
"To support women's influence in the decision-making processes in this area, concrete efforts must be made to create safe spaces away from the traditional male-dominated structure. This will enhance women's participation in the climate decision-making process, which will contribute to building Iraq's more resilient, equitable, and sustainable future. "
